The simultaneous cytological and metabolic investigation of various extravascular body fluids (EBFs) provides clinically relevant information about the type and intensity of the immune response in particular organ systems. The oxidative burst of professional phagocytes with the concomitant production of reactive oxygen species consumes a large amount of oxygen and is the cause of switch to the development of anaerobic metabolism. We assessed the relationships between percentages of neutrophils, aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, and tissue damage via the determination of aspartate aminotransferase catalytic activities (AST) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), pleural effusions (PE), abdominal effusions (AE), and synovial fluids (SF).

Introduction: Doege-Potter syndrome is a rare syndrome characterized by hypo-insulinemic hypoglycemia. It is caused by excessive ectopic secretion of insulin-like growth factor II from a solitary fibrous tumors of intrapleural or extrapleural origin. Laboratory tests reveal low levels of C-peptide and insulin, on the contrary insulin-like growth factor II level is elevated, which is characteristic for Doege-Potter syndrome.

Background: The occurrence of catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is rare, and the awareness of this diagnosis among physicians is insufficient. CP is highly correlated with pelvic endometriosis and remains the most common form of thoracic endometriosis syndrome. Circulating endometrial cells (CECs) have been previously detected in patients with pelvic endometriosis.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), detached from the primary tumor or metastases and shed in the patient's bloodstream, represent a relatively easily obtainable sample of the cancer tissue that can indicate the actual state of cancer, and their evaluation can be repeated many times during the course of treatment. As part of liquid biopsy, evaluation of CTCs provides a lot of clinically relevant information, which reflects the actual, real-time conditions of the disease. CTCs can be used in cancer diagnosis or screening, real-time long-term disease monitoring and even therapy guidance.

[Intrathoracic goitre--undiagnosed--nevertheless operated].

A case review of a female patient, who was indicated for surgery for a goitre with minor bilateral retrosternal spread. The procedure included bilateral thyroidectomy during which the surgeon noticed unusual intrathoracic pathology in the left hemithorax, under the removed lobe. Postoperative chest x-ray and CT examinations revealed intrathoracic goitre, which was then removed during a following procedure.

Many cell cytoskeletons include an aster of microtubules, with the centrosome serving as the focal point. The position of the centrosome within the cell is important in such directional activities as wound closure and interactions of immune cells. Here we analyzed the centrosome positioning as it is dictated by microtubule elasticity alone in a mechanical model of an intrinsically fully symmetric microtubule aster.

Combination of two pseudoaneurysms in a patient 6 years after ascending aorta and aortic valve replacement.

Background: We report successful treatment of a patient 6 years after ascending aorta and aortic valve replacement suffering from a combination of two pseudoaneurysms. The first of them originated from the coronary ostial suture line and the second pseudoaneurysm originated from the distal suture line.

Methods: We performed re-replantation of the left main trunk to the prosthesis and then we resected the pseudoaneurysm originating from the distal suture line and we replaced the entire aorta by a vascular graft.

[Ethical problems in psychiatric intervention in hopeless conditions in patients under the care of somatic specialists].

Psychiatric intervention is usually requested for patients in other hospital departments in case of exacerbation of an intercurrent mental disease, in case of the development of a symptomatic mental disorder directly associated with the basic disease, and finally in case the patient refuses to cooperative with the attending staff. If in the former two indications the psychiatric intervention has a causal or complementary character in the latter the psychiatrist either makes up for the deficit of professional ethics of another specialist, provides an alibi for his possible failure, or objectively the sequelae ensuing from refusal of the intended intervention. The decision of the psychiatrist is influenced more by legal norms and general finally decides with forensic responsibility on the ability of the patient to evaluate ethic principles than evaluation of actual psychopathology.

[Clinical significance of bacterial beta-lactamase production in the treatment of urinary tract infections with oral beta-lactam-antibiotics].

In 649 urological patients with urinary tract infections (UTI) a total of 1114 bacterial strains were isolated and their beta-lactamase production was investigated by a qualitative, micro-iodometric method. Approximately 40% of all strains, 33% of E. coli species and 8% of Proteus mirabilis species were enzyme producers.
