This review undertakes rigorous analysis of much of the copious literature available to the scientific community on the use of alkali-activated binders (AABs) in construction. The authors' main intention is to categorically refute arguments of that part of the scientific community underestimating or even dismissing the actual potential of AABs as alternatives to Portland cement (PC). The main premise invoked in support of those arguments is a presumed lack of material resources for precursors that would make AAB industrial-scale production unfeasible anywhere on the planet (a substantial number of scientific papers show that the raw materials required for AAB manufacture are in abundance worldwide).

Burkholderia xenovorans strain LB400, which possesses the biphenyl pathway, was engineered to contain the oxygenolytic ortho dehalogenation (ohb) operon, allowing it to grow on 2-chlorobenzoate and to completely mineralize 2-chlorobiphenyl. A two-stage anaerobic/aerobic biotreatment process for Aroclor 1242-contaminated sediment was simulated, and the degradation activities and genetic stabilities of LB400(ohb) and the previously constructed strain RHA1(fcb), capable of growth on 4-chlorobenzoate, were monitored during the aerobic phase. The population dynamics of both strains were also followed by selective plating and real-time PCR, with comparable results; populations of both recombinants increased in the contaminated sediment.

A site situated near Alkali Lake (Oregon) and highly contaminated by chloroaromatic compounds was chosen for isolation of alkaliphilic chlorophenol-degrading bacteria. Prolonged cultivation of an enrichment culture followed by successive transfers resulted in a strong increase in the 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) degradation rate. Repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis were applied to distinguish members of the enrichment culture and monitor them during the enrichment procedure.

In this report, we describe two unrelated patients with mental retardation and brachydactyly E classified as patients suffering from Albright hereditary osteodystrophy-like (AHO-like) syndrome. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis using 8 different subtelomeric probes in 2q36-37 proved that the patients had subtelomeric 2qter deletions of similar size. The recently proposed candidate gene glypican 1 (GPC1) is deleted in both reported patients.

Purpose: Keratocytes give rise to fibroblasts and myofibroblasts in wounded cornea. It is well established that treatment of fibroblasts with transforming growth factor (TGF) beta will induce myofibroblast differentiation. We investigated whether this differentiation could be reversed by the administration of fibroblast growth factor (FGF).

The Gram-positive bacterium Rhodococcus sp. strain RHA1, naturally containing the biphenyl pathway, was electroporated with a broad host range plasmid containing the 4-chlorobenzoate (4-CBA) degradation operon (fcb) isolated from Arthrobacter globiformis strain KZT1. The recombinant strain grew in medium containing 4-CBA and 4-chlorobiphenyl (4-CB) as the only source of carbon, with stoichiometric release of chloride and a molar growth yield on 4-CB that suggested utilization of both biphenyl rings.

Purpose: In nonconfluent cultures, TGF-beta induces differentiation of corneal fibroblasts to myofibroblasts. However, in confluent cultures, few fibroblasts differentiate to myofibroblasts after TGF-beta1 addition. This study investigated the hypothesis that functional TGF-beta receptor expression is greater in low-density cultures and is decreased in confluent cultures.

Cloning and expression of the aromatic ring dehalogenation genes in biphenyl-growing, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-cometabolizing Comamonas testosteroni VP44 resulted in recombinant pathways allowing growth on ortho- and para-chlorobiphenyls (CBs) as a sole carbon source. The recombinant variants were constructed by transformation of strain VP44 with plasmids carrying specific genes for dehalogenation of chlorobenzoates (CBAs). Plasmid pE43 carries the Pseudomonas aeruginosa 142 ohb genes coding for the terminal oxygenase (ISPOHB) of the ortho-halobenzoate 1,2-dioxygenase, whereas plasmid pPC3 contains the Arthrobacter globiformis KZT1 fcb genes, which catalyze the hydrolytic para-dechlorination of 4-CBA.
