Clogmia albipunctata (Williston, 1893) is a non-hematophagous insect belonging to the order Diptera, suborder Nematocera (Lower Diptera) and family Psychodidae. In the present work, we investigated how C. albipunctata control their midgut pH under different physiological conditions, comparing their midgut physiology with some nematoceran hematophagous species.

Mild and Rapid Light-Driven Suzuki-Miyaura Reactions Catalyzed by AuPd Nanoparticles in Water at Room Temperature.

Organic reactions carried out in water under mild conditions are state-of-the-art in terms of environmentally benign chemical processes. In this direction, plasmonic catalysis can aid in accomplishing such tasks. In the present work, cyclodextrin-mediated AuPd bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were applied in room-temperature aqueous Suzuki-Miyaura reactions aiming at preparing biaryl products based on fluorene, isatin, benzimidazole and resorcinol, with yields of 77 % up to 95 %.

Morphometric magnetic resonance imaging study of the quadriceps tendon in hemodialysis patients: comparison with non-dialyzed controls.

Objective: To evaluate the knees of individuals with renal failure who are on hemodialysis, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), comparing them with those of a group of individuals with normal renal function.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational, controlled study conducted between August 2018 and February 2020. The cases consisted of 15 patients who had been on hemodialysis for ≥ 5 years and did not have a quadriceps tendon rupture.

TREATMENT OF QUADRICEPS TENDON RUPTURE IN HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS: A 2020 UPDATE.

Quadriceps tendon tears are uncommon injuries often associated with chronic diseases, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The role of secondary hyperparathyroidism as a predisposing factor for tendon tears in this group of patients is well documented, and the weakening of the tendon-bone junction is part of this context. The treatment of choice for quadriceps tendon ruptures in patients with ESRD is surgery, which should be performed as soon as possible.

Ecological and Conservation Significance of Herpesvirus Infection in Neotropical Bats.

Bats are the second most diverse order of mammals and key species for ecosystem functioning, providing a wide range of ecosystem services, from pest control to seed dispersal. Chiropterans are known for hosting a large diversity of viruses, in some cases with little or no effect to their health. Here, we report on the results of a screening for DNA (Herpesviridae) and RNA viruses (Rhabdovirus and Pneumovirus), finding a high prevalence and wide diversity of both Beta- and Gamma-Herpesvirus in insectivorous and hematophagous bats of the southern cone of South America.

Cognitive evolutionary therapy versus standard cognitive therapy for depression: A single-blinded randomized clinical trial.

Methods: Ninety-seven participants (78 females/19 males) were randomized to a single-blinded controlled trial (CET: n = 51 vs. CT: n = 46).

This study investigated predictors of involuntary and voluntary memories of stressful virtual reality scenarios. Thirty-two veterans of the two Persian Gulf Wars completed verbal memory tests and diagnostic assessments. They were randomly assigned to a Recounting (16) or a Suppression (16) condition.

Sprentascaris mahnerti (Nematoda: Raphidascarididae) collected from Loricariichthys labialis (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Pantanal wetlands, State of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil), was redescribed using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and genetically characterised along with two other raphidascaridids: Raphidascaroides brasiliensis and Ro. moraveci. Due to the systematic discussion regarding Raphidascaris and Sprentascaris, as well as the poor knowledge about the phylogenetic relationships within Raphidascarididae, phylogenies were reconstructed based on partial sequences of the 18S and 28S nuclear rRNA gene, the nuclear ITS1-5.

Characterization of a Ternary System Based on Hybrid Nanoparticles.

Hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) are emerging as an important family of multifunctional nanoscale materials. Due to its unique properties cyclodextrins (CDs) present the possibility to be employed in nanostructured devices for multiple applications. Therefore the study of hybrids NPs containing CDs, metal nanoparticles and an organic molecular guest is promising for applications in separation science, sensing, optics, catalysis and medical therapy.

Quadriceps tendon rupture in maintenance haemodialysis patients: results of surgical treatment and analysis of risk factors.

Background: Reports of spontaneous quadriceps ruptures in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are scarce, and the assessment of risk factors for tendon rupture is poorly addressed in the majority of the studies. The purpose of the present study is to report a series of patients on haemodialysis with spontaneous quadriceps tendon ruptures operated at our institution. The results of the surgical treatment are described and the potential risk factors associated with the rupture are analyzed.

Sleep disturbance, disability, and posttraumatic stress disorder in utility workers.

Objective: The objective of the present study was to examine the associations between sleep disturbance, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and functional disability in a population exposed to a singular traumatic event.

Method: The participants were a population of 2,453 predominantly male utility workers who were deployed to the World Trade Center site in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack. They underwent psychiatric screenings comprising measures of sleep disturbance, PTSD, and functional disability.

Evolutionary cognitive therapy versus standard cognitive therapy for depression: a protocol for a blinded, randomized, superiority clinical trial.

Background: Depression is estimated to become the leading cause of disease burden globally by 2030. Despite existing efficacious treatments (both medical and psychotherapeutic), a large proportion of patients do not respond to therapy. Recent insights from evolutionary psychology suggest that, in addition to targeting the proximal causes of depression (for example, targeting dysfunctional beliefs by cognitive behavioral therapy), the distal or evolutionary causes (for example, inclusive fitness) should also be addressed.

Background: Research has shown that exposure to interpersonal violence is associated with poorer mental health outcomes. Understanding the impact of interpersonal violence on mental health in the early postpartum period has important implications for parenting, child development, and delivery of health services. The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of interpersonal violence on depression, anxiety, stress, and parenting morale in the early postpartum.

Clinical effectiveness of using an integrated model to treat depressive symptoms in veterans affairs primary care clinics and its impact on health care utilization.

Objective: To determine if veterans treated in an integrated mental health program within a Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care clinic sustained long-term improvement in depressive symptoms and changed their use of health care.

Method: In this pilot program, 72 veterans were offered short-term treatment for depressive symptoms by a colocated psychiatrist who was integrated into a VA primary care team (October 1, 1997, through September 30, 1999). Patients were assessed initially and at their final session using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale.

Antioxidant potential of rat plasma by administration of freeze-dried jaboticaba peel (Myrciaria jaboticaba Vell Berg).

The effect of the intake of freeze-dried jaboticaba peel powder on the antioxidant potential of rats' blood plasma was investigated in two experiments. Long-term dentoskeletal effects and facial profile changes induced by bionator therapy.

Objective: To evaluate the long-term skeletal and soft tissue changes induced by the bionator in Class II subjects.

Materials And Methods: The treatment sample consisted of 20 Class II patients (6 males and 14 females) treated consecutively with the bionator. The sample was evaluated at T1, start of treatment; T2, end of bionator therapy; and T3, long-term observation (including fixed appliances).

Correlates of functional impairment in treatment-seeking survivors of mass terrorism.

This study sought to identify variables associated with functional impairment in persons exposed to terrorism. A sample of adults who sought treatment for psychological distress related to the 2001 World Trade Center attack completed standardized self-report measures of PTSD symptoms, expectancies of ability to regulate negative moods, interpersonal problems, and social-occupational impairment. A multiple regression analysis found that PTSD numbing symptoms, beliefs about the ability to regulate negative moods, feelings of social discomfort and expectations of being disliked, income level, and relationship status significantly predicted 58% of the variance in social-occupational impairment.

Relationships between memory inconsistency for traumatic events following 9/11 and PTSD in disaster restoration workers.

The present study examined the relationships between memories for a single incident traumatic event - the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center (WTC)--and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 2641 disaster restoration workers deployed at the WTC site in the aftermath of the attack were evaluated longitudinally, one year apart, for PTSD, using clinical interviews. Their recollection of the traumatic events was also assessed at these times.
