Extrauterine mesonephric-like carcinoma (ExUMLC) shares histologic, immunohistochemical (IHC), and molecular (MOL) features with endometrial mesonephric-like carcinoma (EnMLC). Its rarity and histologic overlap with Mullerian carcinomas contribute to underrecognition of ExUMLC. Aggressive behavior of EnMLC is well-documented; behavior of ExUMLC is yet to be characterized.

PAX8 is the most commonly used immunomarker to link a carcinoma to the gynecologic tract; however, it lacks specificity. Through mining The Cancer Genome Atlas mRNA expression profile data, we identified SOX17 as a potential specific marker at the mRNA level for gynecologic tumors. To evaluate the utility of this marker in the identification of the gynecologic origin of a given carcinoma, we performed immunochemical staining in a large cohort of ovarian and endometrial cancer cases (n = 416), together with a large cohort of solid tumors from other organs (n = 1544) in tissue microarrays.

A remarkable amount of new information has been generated on peritoneal mesothelioma (PeM), ranging from nomenclature changes, including the removal of "malignant" when referring to this neoplasm and the use of the term "tumor" rather than "mesothelioma" to designate the neoplasm formerly known as "well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma", to the acknowledgment that PeMs can be associated with tumor predisposition syndromes or germline mutations. Although the disease is still more frequently seen in caucasian males, PeM is not uncommon in women. In addition, it can represent a diagnostic challenge when it has an uncommon presentation (ie, paraneoplastic syndrome or incidental finding) or when it has confounding histologic features.

Background: Low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) is a rare disease that occurs more frequently in younger women than those with high-grade disease. The current treatment is suboptimal and a better understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of this disease is required. In this study, we compared the proteogenomic analyses of LGSOCs from short- and long-term survivors (defined as < 40 and > 60 months, respectively).

The move toward consistent and comprehensive surgical pathology reports for cancer resection specimens has been a key development in supporting evidence-based patient management and consistent cancer staging. The International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) previously developed a data set for reporting of the ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal carcinomas which was published in 2015. In this paper, we provide an update on this data set, as a second edition, that reflects changes in the 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Female Genital Tumours as well as some other minor modifications.

The role and the degree to which environment and geographic isolation contribute to phenotypic diversity has been widely debated. Here, we studied phenotypic variation (morphology and plumage reflectance) in the Sinaloa Wren, an endemic bird distributed throughout the tropical dry forest (TDF) on the Mexican pacific slope where a pronounced variability in environmental conditions has been reported. In particular, we aimed: 1) to characterize phenotypic variation between subspecies; 2) to analyze the relationship between phenotypic and environmental variation in the context of classic ecogeographic rules, such as Bergmann's, Allen's, Gloger's, and Bogert's, and to quantify the relative roles of environment and geographic isolation and their interaction in shaping phenotypic variation; and 3) to test for niche conservatism between subspecies.

Objective: Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSOC) is a rare epithelial ovarian/peritoneal cancer characterized by younger age at diagnosis, relative chemoresistance, prolonged overall survival (OS), and mutations in the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway compared to high-grade serous carcinoma. We describe the genomic profile of LGSOC by next generation sequencing (NGS) and evaluated its potential relationship to clinical outcomes.

Methods: The study included 215 women with LGSOC with: 1) pathologically confirmed LGSOC, 2) availability of NGS data, and 3) adequate clinical data.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) is a rare but aggressive malignancy with limited treatment options. VEGF inhibition enhances efficacy of immune-checkpoint inhibitors by reworking the immunosuppressive tumor milieu. Efficacy and safety of combined PD-L1 (atezolizumab) and VEGF (bevacizumab) blockade (AtezoBev) was assessed in 20 patients with advanced and unresectable MPeM with progression or intolerance to prior platinum-pemetrexed chemotherapy.

Molecular findings in ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSCa) are emerging as potential prognostic indicators. The chemotherapy response score (CRS) has been proposed as a histologic-based prognostic factor in patients with HGSCa treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). No study details the relationship between the mutational landscape of HGSCa and the CRS.

Only a few cases of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) associated with endometriosis have been published; with chronic inflammation of the peritoneum associated with the latter being postulated as an inducing factor in the pathogenesis of this tumor. We assessed the clinicopathologic characteristics of MPeM associated with endometriosis to determine if there were other factors besides inflammation that may contribute to the pathogenesis in this patient population. Fifteen MPeM associated with endometriosis were retrieved from our files.

The Silva pattern-based classification for human papilloma virus-associated invasive adenocarcinoma has emerged as a reliable system to predict risk of lymph node metastasis and recurrences. Although not a part of any staging system yet, it has been incorporated in synoptic reports as established by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR). Moreover, the current National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines include this classification as an "emergent concept.

DPC4 immunohistochemistry (IHC) is usually part of the work-up of mucinous neoplasms in the ovary where the distinction between an ovarian primary and metastatic pancreaticobiliary adenocarcinoma (PanACa) must be made. Although DPC4 IHC is lost in about 55% (46%-61%) of PanACas and typically retained in most primary ovarian mucinous neoplasms, no study has evaluated the expression of this marker in a large cohort of neoplasms arising in or involving gynecologic (GYN) organs. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the expression of DPC4 IHC in a total of 251 tumors and lesions related to the GYN tract in which DPC4 IHC stain was performed during the initial pathology evaluation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different variants of the KRAS gene affect tumor development and growth in a specific mouse model.
  • Researchers used Amhr2-Cre mice to express either the KRAS gene or KRAS mutations, leading to the creation of two distinct groups with different tumor outcomes: G12D resulted in ovarian carcinomas while G12V led to uterine tumors resembling leiomyoma.
  • The study identified specific cellular signaling pathways that varied between the two variants, which could help in developing targeted therapies for cancers associated with different KRAS mutations.

Although several studies have addressed different aspects of mucinous neoplasms arising in the ovary, such as their clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical profile, and molecular characteristics, no study has presented an analysis of the ovarian tissue where these neoplasms arise. In this study, we included 196 cases of intestinal-type ovarian mucinous neoplasms in premenopausal patients. Our main goal was to perform a rigorous examination of the ovarian tissue surrounding these neoplasms.
