Diversities of chromite mineralization induced by chemo-thermal evolution of the mantle during subduction initiation.

Ophiolites, mostly formed via subduction initiation at proto-forearcs, exhibit a unique variation of mantle-derived magmatism from MORB-like to low-Ti tholeiitic and bainitic-like affinities. Such variation was suggested to form chromite deposits spanning high-Al to high-Cr types. Nevertheless, the origin of diverse magmatism during subduction initiation and their linkages to different chromite deposits has long been enigmatic.

Family-Based Interventions with Transgender and Gender Expansive Youth: Systematic Review and Best Practice Recommendations.

Research on transgender and gender expansive (TGE) youth has highlighted the disproportionate and challenging mental health and developmental outcomes faced by these young people. Research also largely suggests that family acceptance of TGE youth's gender identity and expression is crucial to preventing poor psychosocial outcomes in this community. Recently, family-based treatment has become common practice with TGE youth whose families are available for care, but it is unclear whether research provides outcome data for family interventions with TGE youth.

Estrogenic environmental contaminants alter the mRNA abundance profiles of genes involved in gonadal differentiation of the American bullfrog.

Wildlife and human populations are exposed to anthropogenic mixtures of chemicals in the environment that may adversely influence normal reproductive function and development. We determined the effects of exposure to estrogenic chemicals and wastewater effluent (WWE) on developing gonads of the American bullfrog, Rana (Lithobates) catesbeiana, a species whose widespread distribution make it an ideal model for environmental monitoring of endocrine effects of chemical contaminants. Premetamorphic bullfrog tadpoles were exposed to treatment vehicle, 17β-estradiol (E2; 10(-9)M) or 4-tert-octylphenol (OP; 10(-9)M, 10(-8)M, and 10(-7)M).

Breaking the mold: sculpting impasses in couples' therapy.

In the fall of 2009, we the authors started a project at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York City that focuses on understanding and transforming impasses in couples' therapy. In experimenting with various interventions, we discovered the power of sculpting to capture and transform stalemates in couples relationships. In this article, we describe the ways in which sculpting brings forward the gestalt of a couple's impasse, highlights nuances of emotions and feelings, and reveals elements of both present and past.

Between pink and blue: a multi-dimensional family approach to gender nonconforming children and their families.

Families of gender nonconforming children need to negotiate the interactions between two gender systems: a rigid gender binary imported from familial, social, and cultural experiences and a fluid gender spectrum articulated by their child. This article reviews parental reactions to nonconforming gender developments and poses that the parental mandates of protection and acceptance are problematized by the difference of gender norms between the child and the family, as well as the child and the environment. Through multiple therapeutic modalities-parental coaching and education, parent support group, and child and family therapy-the author illustrates interventions supporting both parents and prepubescent children in their negotiation of safety, connection, and fluidity.

s-thalidomide has a greater effect on apoptosis than angiogenesis in a multiple myeloma cell line.

s-Thalidomide has proven efficacy in multiple myeloma. Although it has both antiangiogenic and pro-apoptotic effects, its primary mode of therapeutic action remains unclear. We have investigated the changes to the expression of genes involved with these cellular processes following culture with s-thalidomide in the U266 MM cell line.

Behaviour of chemical elements during weathering of pyroclastic rocks, Hong Kong.

The behaviour of whole-rock major, trace and rare earth elements (REE) during weathering under subtropical conditions is examined along a profile developed over crystal--vitric tuffs with eutaxitic texture. The intensity of weathering within the profile varies erratically, indicating weathering processes operate over different scales. Quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase and biotite are the main primary minerals, whereas clays, sesquioxides, sericite and chlorite are the alteration products.

A randomized trial of maintenance interferon following high-dose chemotherapy in multiple myeloma: long-term follow-up results.

High-dose chemotherapy (melphalan) with autologous marrow stem cell support (AMSCS) results in high response rates in multiple myeloma (MM), with up to 50% of patients achieving complete remission. However, these remissions are generally not durable. As the cytokine interferon alpha has been shown to prolong partial response following conventional chemotherapy, this trial was conducted to evaluate its role following high-dose chemotherapy.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis in adults.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis in the adult is rare, but it is important to recognize its occurrence, as it must be differentiated from lymphoma, myeloma, and a variety of skin conditions and endocrinopathies. It has been reported in patients up to the ninth decade of life, and occurs equally in men and women. Local disease has a good prognosis, but associated diseases--particularly malignancy--may be the cause of death in some adults.

The use of 99mTc-MIBI scanning in multiple myeloma.

Tc-99m 2 methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI), also called Sestamibi, is a safe and effective scanning agent in solid tumours. Its use in imaging lesions in multiple myeloma has been studied in 21 patients with either multiple myeloma (19/21) or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) (2/ 21). 99mTc-MIBI scanning was positive in 14 patients, 13 with active myeloma and one patient with MGUS showing possible transformation to a more accelerated phase.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis in the adult.

A study of 47 well-documented patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) showed a slight female preponderance, with onset as late as the ninth decade. The skin was the commonest site of presentation, but pulmonary and bone involvement was frequent. Patients with single-site disease did best.
