We study a multi-body finite element model of a packing of hydrogel particles using the Flory-Rehner constitutive law to model the deformation of the swollen polymer network. We show that while the dependence of the pressure, , on the effective volume fraction, , is virtually identical to a monolithic Flory material, the shear modulus, , behaves in a non-trivial way. increases monotonically with from zero and remains below about 80% of the monolithic Flory value at the largest we study here.

Article Synopsis
  • - Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a serious complication after cardiac surgery, and while various treatments exist, many have limitations; thus, the study explores pectoralis major flap transposition (PMFT) as a potential effective method.
  • - A study of 785 DSWI patients treated with PMFT found that 90.3% healed successfully, while 9.7% experienced delayed healing or death; additional risk factors for poorer outcomes included diabetes, obesity, and a history of smoking.
  • - The results suggest that PMFT is a safe treatment option for DSWI, but patients with specific risk factors should be monitored closely, and further research is recommended to better understand these relationships.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder that predisposes individuals to develop benign and malignant tumors of the nerve sheath. Understanding the signatures of cancer stem cells (CSCs) for NF1-associated tumors may facilitate the early detection of tumor progression. Neural crest cells, the cell of origin of NF1-associated tumors, can initiate multiple tumor types, including melanoma, neuroblastoma, and schwannoma.

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a growing class of new psychoactive substances (NPS) commonly derived from an -alkylated indole, indazole, or 7-azaindole scaffold. Diversification of this core (at the 3-position) with amide-linked pendant amino acid groups and modular -alkylation (of the indole/indazole/7-azaindole core) ensures that novel SCRAs continue to enter the illicit drug market rapidly. In response to the large number of SCRAs that have been detected, pharmacological evaluation of this NPS class has become increasingly common.

We study plastic strain during individual avalanches in overdamped particle-scale molecular dynamics (MD) and mesoscale elastoplastic models (EPM) for amorphous solids sheared in the athermal quasistatic limit. We show that the spatial correlations in plastic activity exhibit a short length scale that grows as t^{3/4} in MD and ballistically in EPM, which is generated by mechanical excitation of nearby sites not necessarily close to their stability thresholds, and a longer lengthscale that grows diffusively for both models and is associated with remote marginally stable sites. These similarities in spatial correlations explain why simple EPMs accurately capture the size distribution of avalanches observed in MD, though the temporal profiles and dynamical critical exponents are quite different.

Article Synopsis
  • - The text discusses a method to generate alanyl radicals and conduct Giese-type reactions without using metal catalysts, making it simpler and more accessible for anyone in a lab setting.
  • - This reaction can take place at room temperature, in open containers, and typically finishes in five minutes or less, making it efficient in terms of time.
  • - The method produces non-proteinogenic amino acids and peptides without altering their structure, and it works well even in the presence of fluorescent tags, which are often used in research.

Over 200 synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) have been identified as new psychoactive substances. Effective monitoring and characterization of SCRAs are hindered by the rapid pace of structural evolution. Ahead of possible appearance on the illicit drug market, new SCRAs were synthesized to complete a systematic library of cumyl-indole- (, CUMYL-CPrMICA, CUMYL-CPMICA) and cumyl-indazole-carboxamides (, CUMYL-CPrMINACA, CUMYL-CPMINACA), encompassing butyl, pentyl, cyclopropylmethyl, cyclobutylmethyl, cyclopentylmethyl, and cyclohexylmethyl tails.

We develop a mesoscopic model to study the plastic behavior of an amorphous material under cyclic loading. The model is depinning-like and driven by a disordered thresholds dynamics that is coupled by long-range elastic interactions. We propose a simple protocol of "glass preparation" that allows us to mimic thermalization at high temperatures as well as aging at vanishing temperature.

Previous research has established a strong relationship between family system functioning and child adjustment outcomes. However, within the context of Gaza, an evaluation of both maternal and paternal factors associated with adolescent psychological adjustment has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. The current study examines how maternal and paternal trauma exposure, emotional security, and mental health are related to parent-reported scores of adolescent psychological adjustment, while controlling for adolescent trauma exposure and security in the family.

Purpose: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), exhibit genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity, making them difficult to differentiate without a molecular diagnosis. The Clinical Genome Resource Intellectual Disability/Autism Gene Curation Expert Panel (GCEP) uses systematic curation to distinguish ID/ASD genes that are appropriate for clinical testing (ie, with substantial evidence supporting their relationship to disease) from those that are not.

Methods: Using the Clinical Genome Resource gene-disease validity curation framework, the ID/Autism GCEP classified genes frequently included on clinical ID/ASD testing panels as Definitive, Strong, Moderate, Limited, Disputed, Refuted, or No Known Disease Relationship.
