As part of a comparative analysis of spontaneous mitotic and meiotic recombination we have compared the mitotic and meiotic maps of the wild type and yeast hybrids homozygous for reml-l, a mitosis-specific hyper-rec mutation (Golin and Esposito, 1977; Golin, 1979). In wild type yeast strains recombination in centromere proximal intervals occurs relatively more frequently in mitosis than in meiosis. In reml-1/rem1-1 hybrids the distribution of mitotic exchange events is more similar to the distribution observed in meiosis.

Directionality and nonreciprocality of Chi-stimulated recombination in phage lambda.

Chi's are genetic elements that stimulate generalized recombination in their locale in phage lambda. All Chi's wherever located on lambda's chromosome, act asymmetrically in crosses blocked in DNA replication: (1) They stimulate exchange primarily to their left on the conventional lambda map, and (2) the stimulated exchange is frequently nonreciprocal, the recombinant carrying the Chi element being produced less often than the complementary product.

In 12 patients having major intra-abdominal procedures, the COP was followed during the operative and immediate postoperative periods. The role of Chi mutations in the Spi- phenotype of phage lambda: lack of evidence for a gene delta.
