Gelled emulsion particles for the controlled release of lipophilic volatiles during eating.

Gelled emulsion particles are discussed in relation to controlling the release of lipophilic volatiles in the mouth during eating, using a mass spectroscopic technique that enables real time measurement of volatiles on the breath. Our studies have demonstrated that by encapsulating triglyceride oil droplets within biopolymer gelled particles (70-5000 microm), the initial flavour release maxima were reduced by kinetically inhibiting the mass transfer of flavour through the particle. An important feature of this approach was that it was the oil droplets and not the volatiles that were encapsulated.

Myogenin and MyoD1 expression in paediatric rhabdomyosarcomas.

The diagnosis of paediatric solid tumours is often based on small tissue needle biopsies in which many different entities demonstrate a "small round cell tumour" phenotype and in which there may be insufficient tissue to allow the interpretation of diagnostic architectural features, which may be present in larger specimens. Therefore, the extensive use of a panel of immunohistochemical markers is part of the routine handling and investigation of such biopsies to reach a definite diagnosis. However, in some cases the morphological and routine immunohistochemical findings may be insufficient for a precise diagnosis or they may be difficult to interpret in the given clinical context.

Health visiting at the crossroads: which way to the 21st century?

This article presents a response from a group of lecturers at Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King's College London and one service user to the perception of a crisis of confidence within health visiting. Changes in registration procedures and shifts in policy have led health visiting to question its place within primary care and the model of preparation for health visiting practice. The group argues that this debate is based on a misunderstanding of the changing health care environment and that health visiting can find a place within the primary care team.

Microarray analysis uncovers the induction of the proapoptotic BH3-only protein Bim in multiple models of glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis.

Despite being one of the earliest recognized and most clinically relevant forms of apoptosis, little is known about the transcriptional events that mediate glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis. Therefore, we used oligonucleotide microarrays to identify the pattern of dexamethasone-induced changes in gene expression in two well characterized models of glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis, the murine lymphoma cell lines S49.A2 and WEHI7.

Barriers to mental health care access in an African American population.

Emphasis has been placed on understanding the mental health disparities that exist within minority populations in the United States. Disparities are of particular importance when examining access to services. This paper reports findings from a NINR-funded qualitative study that examined the barriers to mental health care service use in an African American low-income population.

The serotonin 5-HT1B receptor gene and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Recent research has suggested that serotonin, in addition to dopamine, may be involved in the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Serotonin regulates dopaminergic neurotransmission in some areas of the brain via several 5-HT receptors including 5-HT1B. Animal studies have suggested the involvement of the 5-HT1B receptors in locomotor behaviour.

A method is described for continuous, nondestructive analysis of xylem-borne mineral nutrients in intact transpiring plants. The method uses the xylem-feeding insect the meadow spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius L. [Homoptera: Cercopidae]).

Aberrant immunohistochemical expression in nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas of infancy: retrospective review of clinical material.

Malignant soft tissue tumors other than rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) are uncommon in infancy, representing approximately 5% of pediatric sarcomas. The pathological categorization of non-RMS soft tissue malignancies from these young patients is complicated by variation in both morphologic and immunohistochemical features. A search covering an 11-year period identified 19 patients presenting at birth or in infancy with a clinical or referral diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma.

Multiple mechanisms of rhabdom shedding in the lateral eye of Limulus polyphemus.

Rhabdom shedding in horseshoe crab lateral eye photoreceptors was studied with anti-opsin and anti-arrestin immunocytochemistry. Two, possibly three, distinct shedding mechanisms were revealed in animals maintained in natural lighting. Transient rhabdom shedding, triggered by dawn, is a brief, synchronous event that removes up to 10% of the rhabdom membrane.

Data Sources: A MEDLINE search of the English-language literature (1990-August 2001) was performed using the key terms orlistat, obesity, glucose, and diabetes.

Data Extraction: All articles pertaining to orlistat were considered for inclusion, with emphasis placed on randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trials.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the gene for dopamine Beta-hydroxylase.

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been shown to be highly heritable, and recent molecular genetics studies have focused on candidate genes in the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems. One recent study reported an association of an allele of the TaqI polymorphism located in the fifth intron of the gene for dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH). The authors' goal was to replicate this finding.

Intravascular inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors in infancy.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT), previously described as inflammatory pseudotumor, can occur at any age but is a recognized soft tissue tumor of childhood. Less than 10 previous cases have been described of IMT affecting the heart, in patients ranging from 5 months to 17 years of age. We present three unusual, but similar, cases of IMT in infants, which were all predominantly intravascular in location, one of which was associated with death due to angiodestructive lesions of the coronary and cerebral arteries.

The norepinephrine transporter gene and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The adrenergic system plays a known role in attentional systems and a suspected causal role in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), based on evidence from pharmacological interventions and animal models. The efficacy of the highly selective noradrenergic reuptake inhibitor, tomoxetine, in treating ADHD symptoms supports the system's role in ADHD and points to the norephinephrine transporter as a candidate gene. This study tested the gene for the norepinephrine transporter (NET1) as a susceptibility factor in ADHD using three polymorphisms located in exon 9, intron 9, and intron 13.

A validated liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry assay for cis-amminedichloro(2-methylpyridine)platinum(II) in human plasma ultrafiltrate.

The clinical use of platinum drugs as anticancer agents has encountered problems when relating pharmacokinetic profiles with efficacy and toxicity is attempted. This has been mainly due to the lack of specific and sensitive analytical methodology to examine concentrations of the unbound drug in plasma. The presence of a carbocyclic ring on the new drug, cis-amminedichloro(2-methylpyridine)platinum(II) (ZD0473) suggested that it would be possible to develop the first stable isotope dilution LC/MS assay for a platinum drug in human plasma ultrafiltrate samples.

Mobilization of calcium in glasshouse tomato plants by localized scorching.

It is postulated here that significant amounts of calcium will be mobilized into the plant by the scorching of one old leaf. This postulate was tested using large (6 m) tomato plants in the glasshouse. Brief scorching with a blowlamp was shown to release some 35% of the leaf's water into the plant.

Serotonin syndrome induced by fluvoxamine and mirtazapine.

Objective: To document a case of serotonin syndrome associated with the combined use of fluvoxamine and mirtazapine, and to discuss the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic interactions that were the likely causes of this potentially serious adverse drug reaction (ADR).

Case Summary: A 26-year-old white woman with a 12-year history of anorexia nervosa was being treated with fluvoxamine. After mirtazapine was added to her therapy, she developed tremors,restlessness, twitching, flushing, diaphoresis, and nausea,symptoms that are consistent with serotonin syndrome.
