Importance: Heterogeneity in development of estrogen receptor (ER)-specific first primary breast cancer exists due to deleterious germline variants in moderate- to high-penetrance breast cancer susceptibility genes, but it is unknown if these associations occur in ER-specific CBC.
Objective: To determine the association of deleterious germline variants in breast cancer susceptibility genes with ER-specific CBC development and whether ER status of the first primary breast cancer modifies these associations.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This case-control study included CBC cases and matched unilateral breast cancer controls from The Women's Environment, Cancer, and Radiation Epidemiology (WECARE) Study, a population-based case-control study.

Purpose: The association between statin use and cancer survival has been investigated in previous studies with conflicting findings. This study aimed to assess the association between statin use following cancer diagnosis and survival in six common cancers using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database.
Methods: Individuals aged ≥ 66 years diagnosed with prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) from 2008 through 2017 were identified.
Glioblastoma is the commonest and deadliest primary brain tumor. Glioblastoma is characterized by significant intra- and inter-tumoral heterogeneity, resistance to treatment and dismal prognoses despite decades of research in understanding its biological underpinnings. Encompassed within this heterogeneity and therapy resistance are severely dysregulated programmed cell death pathways.

Background: We evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS; obesity plus two metabolic risk factors) and breast cancer outcomes according to molecular subtype.
Methods: This population-based prospective cohort consisted of 3,267 women ages 20 to 69 years diagnosed with a first primary invasive breast cancer from 2004 to 2015 in the Seattle-Puget Sound region. Breast cancer was categorized into three subtypes based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor, and HER2 expression: luminal (ER+), triple-negative (ER-/progesterone receptor negative/HER2-), and HER2-overexpressing (H2E; ER-/HER2+) subtypes.
Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension measurement of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole.

Community organizations can help mitigate the negative impact of systemic inequities and lack of support that Black caregivers of autistic family members experience. Little is known about the types of support Black families seek from these organizations.

Materials And Methods: Fingernail samples were collected from a single mother-infant dyad over 19 months postpartum. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were measured in the bulk keratin of the fingernail samples.
Background: Nursing PhD students face the difficulty of conducting integrative literature reviews that may lead to bias and lack of rigor particularly in the literature search, data evaluation, and data analysis stages. This article describes the development and use of an arts-based learning exercise to identify potential biases and improve on the critical and writing skills of students during the integrative literature review process.
Method: The exercise consisted of visits to the university's museum, moderated discussions with nursing faculty and the museum educator, visual analyses of artwork, building art portfolios, and writing assignments.
Smac mimetic compounds (SMCs) are small molecule drugs that sensitize cancer cells to TNF-α-induced cell death and have multiple immunostimulatory effects through alterations in NF-κB signaling. The combination of SMCs with immunotherapies has been reported to result in durable cures of up to 40% in syngeneic, orthotopic murine glioblastoma (GBM) models. Herein, we find that SMC resistance is not due to a cell-intrinsic mechanism of resistance.

Prior studies have shown excellent agreement between MRA and self-report, but it is unknown how a recall window longer than 3 years may affect this agreement.
Methods: The Women's Environmental Cancer and Radiation Epidemiology (WECARE) Study is a multicenter, population-based case-control study of controls with unilateral breast cancer individually matched to cases with contralateral breast cancer.
Human immunodeficiency virus-associated neurocognitive disorders persist in the combination antiretroviral therapy era. CD4 nadir is a well-established predictor of cognition cross-sectionally, but its impact on longitudinal neurocognitive (NC) trajectories is unclear. The few studies on this topic examined trajectories of global cognition, rather than specific NC domains.

We aimed to understand the genetic mechanisms of bedaquiline resistance by analysing Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from South Africa.
Methods: For this genomic analysis, we conducted whole-genome sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis samples collected at two referral laboratories in Cape Town and Johannesburg, covering regions of South Africa with a high prevalence of tuberculosis.
We report a case of posttraumatic compressive neuropathy of the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve occurring in the setting of heterotopic ossification following a direct blow to the hypothenar eminence. Over several weeks, the patient developed ring and little finger claw deformities and atrophy of his first dorsal interosseous and adductor pollicis muscles with sparing of sensation. Electromyography and nerve conduction study localized the area of injury, and computed tomography confirmed the presence of heterotopic bone near the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve.

Using a structure-function approach, we investigated the ability of the ATAD2/B BRDs to select acetylated lysine among multiple histone post-translational modifications. The ATAD2B BRD can bind acetylated histone ligands that also contain adjacent methylation or phosphorylation marks, while the presence of these modifications significantly weakened the acetyllysine binding activity of the ATAD2 BRD.

The objective of this study was to assess the association between statin use after cancer diagnosis and cancer outcomes among breast cancer patients.
Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 38,858 women aged ≥66 years who were diagnosed with localized and regional stage breast cancer from 2008 through 2017 were identified from the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Medicare database.
Background: Contralateral breast cancer (CBC) is the most common second primary cancer diagnosed in breast cancer survivors, yet the understanding of the genetic susceptibility of CBC, particularly with respect to common variants, remains incomplete. This study aimed to investigate the genetic basis of CBC to better understand this malignancy.
Findings: We performed a genome-wide association analysis in the Women's Environmental Cancer and Radiation Epidemiology (WECARE) Study of women with first breast cancer diagnosed at age < 55 years including 1161 with CBC who served as cases and 1668 with unilateral breast cancer (UBC) who served as controls.
Background: This study evaluates the relationship between smoking, alcohol, and breast cancer outcomes according to molecular subtype.
Methods: This population-based prospective cohort consisted of 3,876 women ages 20 to 69 diagnosed with a first primary invasive breast cancer from 2004 to 2015 in the Seattle-Puget Sound region. Breast cancer was categorized into three subtypes based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 expressions: luminal (ER+), triple-negative (TN; ER-/PR-/HER2-), and HER2-overexpressing (H2E; ER-/HER2+).

We show here that mouse primary fibroblasts, grown in suspension, change from the elongated and flattened morphology observed under standard adherent culture conditions of generating rounded cells with large nuclei and scant cytoplasm and expressing the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) marker (Sca1; Ly6A) within 24 h. Based on this initial observation, we describe here a suspension culture method that, irrespective of the lineage used, mouse fibroblast or primary human somatic cells (fibroblasts, hepatocytes and keratinocytes), is capable of generating a high yield of cells in spheroid form which display the expression of ASC surface markers, circumventing the anoikis which often occurs at this stage.
