Female Patient with Simultaneous Occurrence of Subacute Thyroiditis and Focal Autonomy.

A 57-year-old female patient presented at the emergency department with fatigue, increased sweating, flushing symptoms, loss of appetite, drowsiness and severe diarrhea. Besides she also mentioned painful left-sided sore throat radiating to the temples, beginning two weeks after a flu and subfebrile temperatures.

Brillouin scattering-induced rogue waves in self-pulsing fiber lasers.

We report the experimental observation of extreme instabilities in a self-pulsing fiber laser under the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Specifically, we observe temporally localized structures with high intensities that can be referred to as rogue events through their statistical behaviour with highly-skewed intensity distributions. The emergence of these SBS-induced rogue waves is attributed to the interplay between laser operation and resonant Stokes orders.

Induced urinary crystal formation as an analytical strategy for the prediction and monitoring of urolithiasis and other metabolism-related disorders.

Crystal formation reflects the entire composition of the surrounding solution. In case of urolithiasis, induced crystal formation in native urine has led to the development of the Bonn-Risk-Index (BRI), a valuable tool to quantify an individual's risk of calcium oxalate urolithiasis. If the progression of a disease is associated with characteristic changes in the activities of urinary components, this leads to an altered urinary crystallisation capacity.

[Medical devices and patient safety from the clinicians' view].

In daily routine, clinically orientated physicians are confronted with various, often highly sophisticated medical devices. To ensure safe handling and usage, licensees and operators of those devices have to follow regulations and laws given by the German medical device legislation. For the clinician as an active user of the technology, basic knowledge of these regulations is essential.

The sequelae of serous retinal detachment in preeclampsia.

Retinal detachment is a rare complication of preeclampsia. In 24,920 consecutive deliveries from 1970 at the Vancouver General Hospital, preeclampsia was diagnosed in 1435 patients (5.76%), and in 2 cases serous retinal detachment occurred.

Multiple ophthalmic anomalies and digital hypoplasia.

Multiple congenital eye and hand anomalies occurred in a young female born to normal but consanguineous parents. Both eyes were microphthalmic with severe corneal, iris lens pathology. Ultrasonography revealed multiple echos from the vitreous.

Automatic testing of the visual field using electro-oculographic potentials.

The central visual field is tested using static perimetry on a tangent screen located 1 m from the patient. During the test electro-oculographic (EOG) potentials, associated with eye movements, are recorded. For this purpose two pairs of electrodes are placed in such a way that one pair records the vertical and the other the horizontal component of the EOG potential.

The use of contact B mode ultrasound in pediatric ophthalmology.

It has been shown that an ultrasound system such as the Bronson-Turner Contact B Mode can be added, fruitfully, to the armamentarium of the individual pediatric ophthalmologist. It can be used quickly and precisely with an ophthalmological training and without patient discomfort or anesthesia no matter what the age. Valuable anterior segment information can be readily gained without a waterbath.
