[The impact of extractions on profile esthetics: a statistical study].

This study assesses and compares the impact of orthodontic treatment with premolar extractions on the profile of the soft tissues in hyper- and normodivergent patients from our Moroccan population which is characterized by a high rate of hyperdivergency. This retrospective study was performed on a sample of 60 adults (30 hyperdivergents and 30 normodivergents). Pre-treatment and end-of-treatment headfilms were used to take sagittal and vertical measurements of soft tissue using the Frapier method which takes the Björk-Nielsen implant line as superimposition landmark.

Bacterial diversity in Fez tanneries and Morocco's Binlamdoune River, using 16S RNA gene based fingerprinting.

Tannery wastewater causes serious ecological and sanitary damage. Chemical analysis of water from Binlamdoune River of the medina of Fez was conducted and the results revealed the presence of toxic elements from tanneries and other industrial activities, which strongly affected water quality. To determine the effectiveness of bioremediation for depollution, we studied the abundance and diversity of bacteria residing in these polluted environments.

An algorithm for managing warfarin resistance.

Some patients need higher-than-expected doses of warfarin (Coumadin) to get their international normalized ratio (INR) into the therapeutic range. The cause of warfarin resistance can be either acquired (eg, poor compliance, drug interactions, dietary interactions) or hereditary, but the genetic mechanisms of warfarin resistance are not well understood. This review offers an algorithm for the evaluation of patients with suspected warfarin resistance.

Carbonatite melts and electrical conductivity in the asthenosphere.

Electrically conductive regions in Earth's mantle have been interpreted to reflect the presence of either silicate melt or water dissolved in olivine. On the basis of laboratory measurements, we show that molten carbonates have electrical conductivities that are three orders of magnitude higher than those of molten silicate and five orders of magnitude higher than those of hydrated olivine. High conductivities in the asthenosphere probably indicate the presence of small amounts of carbonate melt in peridotite and can therefore be interpreted in terms of carbon concentration in the upper mantle.

Erythropoietin prevents dialysis fluid-induced apoptosis of mesothelial cells.

Background: In peritoneal dialysis (PD)-treated patients, denudation of the mesothelium correlates with peritoneal fibrosis and vascular changes. Since recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) induces a range of cytoprotective cellular responses, rHuEPO treatment may reduce PD fluid (PDF)-induced damage.

Methods: To investigate the antiapoptotic effect and mechanism of rHuEPO in peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs), isolated mice PMCs were used for in vitro characterization of rHuEPO effects.

Burkholderia gladioli associated abscess in a type 1 diabetic patient.

Burkholderia gladioli, a bacterial pathogen, causes a variety of infectious ailments in immunocompromised individuals. We present a case report of foreign body associated Burkholderia gladioli related abscess in an immunocompetent type 1 diabetic patient. Relevant medical literature is reviewed to understand this unusual mode of presentation of this bacterium in our patient.

Preferential use of an anode as an electron acceptor by an acidophilic bacterium in the presence of oxygen.

Several anaerobic metal-reducing bacteria have been shown to be able to donate electrons directly to an electrode. This property is of great interest for microbial fuel cell development. To date, microbial fuel cell design requires avoiding O(2) diffusion from the cathodic compartment to the sensitive anodic compartment.

The incidence of dyslexia among young offenders in Kuwait.

This paper investigates the incidence of dyslexia among young offenders in Kuwait. A total of 91 children/young adults from 8 juvenile delinquent welfare centres across Kuwait were interviewed and tested. A measure of non-verbal reasoning ability was used to exclude those with low general ability.

Stability domains of actin genes and genomic evolution.

In eukaryotic genes, the protein coding sequence is split into several fragments, the exons, separated by noncoding DNA stretches, the introns. Prokaryotes do not have introns in their genomes. We report calculations of the stability domains of actin genes for various organisms in the animal, plant, and fungi kingdoms.

Nucleic acid amplification technology screening for hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus for blood donations.

Objective: To investigate the performance of the commercial Roche COBAS AmpliScreen assay, and demonstrate whether the COBAS AmpliScreen human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) test, v1.5, and COBAS AmpliScreen hepatitis C virus (HCV) v 2.0 for screening for HIV-1 and HCV RNA in the donated blood units from which plasma mini pools were collected, by nucleic acid amplification technology (NAT), could detect the positive pools and reduce the risk of transmission of infections for those routinely tested by serological assays.

Correlation between floppy to rigid transitions and non-Arrhenius conductivity in glasses.

Non-Arrhenius behavior is observed for a number of virgin potassium silicate glasses (1-x)SiO2-xK2O with a potassium oxide concentration larger than a certain value x = x(c). Recovering of Arrhenius behavior is provided by the annealing that enhances densification. These various results are the manifestation of the floppy or rigid nature of the network.

[Gliosarcomas. A case report].

Gliosarcomas account for 2% of glioblastomas. We report a case of gliosarcoma in a 65-year-old man, which presented as meningioma, and discuss diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of this particular entity.

Exons, introns, and DNA thermodynamics.

The genes of eukaryotes are characterized by protein coding fragments, the exons, interrupted by introns, i.e., stretches of DNA which do not carry useful information for protein synthesis.

[Intramedullary schwannoma. A case report].

The intramedullary localization of schwannoma is rare, corresponding to 0.3% of all intraspinal tumors. We report a case of intramedullary schwannoma without symptoms suggestive of neurofibromatosis.

[Intramedullary tuberculomas. Five cases].

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system is uncommon. The intramedullary localization is exceptional. We report five cases of intramedullary tuberculosis observed in four women and one man with a mean age of 43 years.

[Lumbar intradural hydatid cyst. Case report].

Hydatid disease is a serious public health problem in developing countries. Cerebrospinal localizations account for 1% of all cases of hydatid disease. The spino-radicular form is exceptional.

A study on radiographic repeat rate data of several hospitals in Jeddah.

Radiographic repeat rate data in diagnostic radiology in King Fahad Hospital (KFH), King Abdulaziz Hospital (KAH), and Maternity and Children Hospital (MCH) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, have been studied. The study provided valuable information to suggest preventive measures to reduce repeats. The variables included in the study are exposure techniques, examination types, total number of films used, number of films repeated, the film sizes, gender, the age groups of the patients, and reason for repetition.

A user-oriented software for cytological image analysis. Application to automatic DNA content measurement of thyroid cells.

More and more physicians and researchers in biology and image processing and analysis are using and developing methods which involve image analysing systems: image analysis permits replacement of qualitative subjective evaluation of cytological and histological specimens by quantitative methods. The purpose of our work was to provide a software which would fulfil constraints set by different users. This software is based on the following features: an automated cytology oriented architecture, a standard user interface and a selectable user mode.
