We study 117 Pacific walrus samples from three rookeries within the western part of Chukchi Sea (Cape Vankarem, Cape Serdtse-Kamen, and Kolyuchin Island). We analyze the variability of nuclear (20 microsatellite loci) and mitochondrial DNA (three fragments). Two microsatellite loci which are described as microsatellites for the first time are used in this study: repeated sequences within introns of Coro1c and Plod2 genes.

Mature hybrids between chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, which were identified by an intermediate colour pattern, were caught at the Kurilsky Hatchery, Iturup Island, Russia. Most of them were female and 3 years old (a partial freshwater year and 2 marine years), which is intermediate between the ages of maturity of the parental species. The hybrids exceed both parental species in the rate of growth, are large in size and robust and might successfully compete for mating in the wild or be chosen for artificial reproduction.

The nucleotide sequences of a fragment of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene were determined in 12 chum salmon populations from the Russian Far East. The level of genetic diversity in the chum salmon populations from the Iturup Island, northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, and Anadyr' River was found to be higher than in the populations from Kamchatka and Sakhalin, which may be related to the history of their origin and dispersal. The proportions of intrapopulation genetic variability (F(ct)) and interpopulation genetic variability within the groups (F(sc)) account for 90.

Was undertaken the effort to define the limits of the adaptive norms and of high risk groups in regard to the work connected with fissile materials (FM), radioactive materials (RM) and ionizing radiation sources (IRS). In view of the aforementioned goal it was made a comparative evaluation of the individual radiosensitivity measurements and anthropometric indicators in the cohort formed from VNIIEF personnel, which was exposed to a constant occupational gamma-neutron irradiation, as well as the non-irradiated cohort. There were analyzed the dispersion dependencies on height, on chest and on head circumference and heterozygosis by 9 loci.

Below is given a comparative evaluation of the genetic and the epidemiological examination of the cohort comprised by VNIIEF personnel subjected chronically to gamma-neutron ionizing radiation (74 persons), as well as nonirradiated cohort (74 persons). There are obtained data on the influence of the integral genotype structure on the health of an individual in case of occupational irradiation. The epidemiological analysis revealed statistically meaningful differences between the main and the control cohorts in the following five cases: acute respiratory diseases, diseases of upper respiratory tract, brain vessel malfunctions; illnesses connected with vision organs and cardio-vascular system and traumas.

A comparative evaluation of the cytological and dosimetric examination of the cohort comprised by VNIEF personnel subjected chronically to gamma-neutron ionizing radiation, as well as non-irradiated cohort is given. The obtained data on the influence of the occupational and on X-ray irradiation, age and smoking on the rate of structural genome damage, as well as the activity of the human repair system activity are presented. The influence of the individual heterozygosis by 9 polymorphous loci: Hp, Tf, Gc; 6-PGD, EsD, ACP, PGM1, microsatellite lici SCF1PO and F13AO1 is shown.

The character and extent of population differentiation in chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta from Sakhalin and Iturup were comparatively studied with 10 microsatellite and 12 allozyme markers. It was demonstrated with the example of allozyme polymorphism at the EstD locus that the effect of an individual locus with one major allele is capable of distorting the total picture of population differentiation. Multiallelic microsatellites were more efficient in revealing the genetic structure of chum salmon populations at the levels of differences between regional populations and between the stocks of individual rivers of the same region.

Genetic structure of juvenile fish from the populations of the Atlantic salmon Salmo salar inhabiting the rivers of Murmansk oblast, Arkhangelsk oblast, and Karelia, as well as of juveniles from hatcheries was examined at five allozymic loci: aspartate aminotransferase (AAT-4*), isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDHP-3*), iditol dehydrogenase (IDDH-2*), esterase D (ESTD*), and malic enzyme (MEP-2*). High genetic differentiation of both natural and "hatchery" juvenile fish was revealed. It was demonstrated that the gene pool of juveniles at three of the five loci tested was to a considerable degree formed by natural selection.

In aqueous medium etiolated wheat seedlings release superoxide anion (O2*-). Interaction of a synthetic antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, ionol), with oxygen in the aqueous medium is accompanied by O2*- formation. This suggests that under certain conditions BHT behaves as a prooxidant.

Effects of outbreeding on variation of four anthropometric traits--body weight, body length, and circumferences of head and chest--and variability of seven polymorphic loci coding for blood proteins--HP, GC, PGD, GLO1, ESD, ACP, and PGM1--were studied. A total of 514 infants (271 boys and 243 girls) were examined. On the basis of pedigree analysis, two groups were formed: infants from monoethnic families (N = 363) and those from multiethnic backgrounds (N = 151).

Variations of four anthropometric traits (body weight, body length, circumference of head, and circumference of chest) were compared in 149 premature and 819 full-term newborns. The average value of every studied trait for premature newborns was much less than that for full-term newborns. In premature boys, the correlation between body weight and length and circumferences of head and chest was substantially decreased.

Allozyme variability in 37 strains of soil bacilli related to Bacillus subtilis was studied. A study of electrophoretic mobility of corresponding enzymes showed that, with one exception the strains did not differ essentially from the standard strain Bacillus subtilis 168 Marburg, in accordance with the results on electrophoretic mobility of corresponding enzymes. However, considerable genetic diversity was revealed at the intraspecific level in the population of bacilli under study.

The distribution of the genetic markers of leukocytes (HLA I and II), serum proteins (allotypes Gm, transferrin, haptoglobin, group-specific component), red cell enzymes (acid phosphatase--AP, phosphoglucomutase--PGM, esterase D, adenosine deaminase) was found to be universal in patients suffering from various pyoinflammatory diseases. The incidence of HLA A10, Cw4, DR5 antigens, IgG allotype G1m (2) and phenotype G1m (+1+2) and AP (aa) and PGM (2-2) phenotypes was found increased in patients with maxillofacial suppuration and pyoinflammatory complications of maxillofacial injuries as against normal subjects and patients with maxillofacial injuries without such complications. Traumatic osteomyelitis much more often develops in the carriers of the before genetic markers than in those in whom these markers are absent (61.
