Introduction: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is common in patients with heart failure (HF) and is associated with advanced HF and increased mortality. Intravenous iron supplementation increases exercise tolerance, improves quality of life, and decreases symptoms among patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and iron deficiency. Despite this, many patients are not screened or treated for IDA.

We report a case of fulminant COVID-19-related myocarditis requiring venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation where the use of an ultrasound-enhancing agent demonstrated a previously undescribed echocardiographic finding, the "lightbulb" sign. This sign potentially represents a new area for the use of an ultrasound enhancing agent in the echocardiographic diagnosis of myocarditis.

Article Synopsis
  • Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) has been found to increase survival rates in certain patients experiencing cardiac arrest, as shown in a meta-analysis of 92 studies.* -
  • Pooled results indicated that 25% of patients achieved short-term survival and 16% experienced favorable neurologic outcomes (FNO) after eCPR.* -
  • Key factors linked to better survival included lower lactate levels, a shockable rhythm, and shorter durations of CPR, while FNO was associated with lower lactate, shockable rhythm, and targeted temperature management use.*

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a frequent complication of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and is associated with an increased risk of in-hospital and long-term mortality. Our objective was to determine whether patients with previous AF and those who presented with or developed AF during their ACS hospitalization (new onset) have an associated increased risk of short- and mid-term cardiovascular events, death, or a composite. We included 7,228 patients from the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events electrocardiogram core laboratory substudy, who presented with an ACS.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of drug-coated balloon (DEB) for the treatment of drug-eluting stent (DES) in-stent restenosis (ISR).

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed. The primary outcome was the composite of death, myocardial infarction (MI), and target-lesion revascularization (TLR) at longest available follow-up (range, 12-36 months).

Background: Our laboratory previously reported that imatinib mesylate (IM) has an inhibitory effect on two retinoblastoma (Rb) cell lines in vitro.

Aims: The purpose of this project was to determine the immunoexpression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR)-α, PDGFR-β and c-Abl in 61 human samples of Rb to determine if IM-sensitive receptors are present. Additionally, this paper seeks to establish a correlation between the expression of PDGFR, c-Abl and the histopathological prognosis.

Background: Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is a rare, severe complication of varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation in the geniculate ganglion. Facial paralysis is one of the features and without treatment, it fully recovers in as little as 20% of cases; this is much improved if treatment is started within 72 hours. This case is noteworthy in that coexistence of facial palsy with cervical dermatome involvement by VZV is not typical of RHS.
