Background: Current guidelines do not recommend β-blockers in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) unless indicated by comorbidities. However, the evidence regarding the role of β-blockers in PAH is contradictory.

Research Question: What are the effects of β-blockers on clinical outcomes in patients newly diagnosed with PAH, and how do these outcomes differ based on the presence of cardiovascular comorbidities that are standard indications for β-blocker use?

Study Design And Methods: We analyzed data from 806 patients newly diagnosed with PAH enrolled prospectively in the Database of Pulmonary Hypertension in the Polish Population (BNP-PL).

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a disease resulting from impaired patency of the pulmonary arteries by a clot, and the treatment method of choice is pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). In inoperable patients, balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is recommended, but we need to implement pharmacological bridge therapy to BPA in some cases. We report a case of a 38-year-old male diagnosed with CTEPH, disqualified from PEA due to comorbidity, who developed right ventricular (RV) failure.

Background: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH) have increased risk of developing diastolic dysfunction (DD) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (EF). In this observational study, we evaluated DD and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in PLWH receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) with undetectable viremia.

Methods: We conducted an observational study.

Background: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LV DD) is the most dominant cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) worldwide. This pathological condition may contribute to postcapillary pulmonary hypertension (pcPH) development. Hypoxemia, often observed in pcPH, may significantly negatively impact the course of hospitalization in patients after cardiac surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research shows that changes in glucose and lipid metabolism in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) relate to the severity of the disease and survival rates, but the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on IPAH prognosis are less understood.
  • The study analyzed data from a national registry of Polish patients with IPAH, focusing on information collected from March 2018 to August 2020, and assessed all-cause mortality over a 30-month period while controlling for factors like age and body mass index (BMI).
  • The results revealed that 25.6% of the 532 patients had DM, which was linked to more severe symptoms and higher mortality rates in IPAH compared to those without DM, indicating that patients

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an independent risk factor of increased morbidity and mortality in cardiac surgery patients (CS). The most common cause underlying PH is left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate the echocardiographic probability of PH in patients undergoing CS and its correlation with postoperative respiratory adverse events (RAE).

Antibiotic therapy must be carried out consistently and according to the guidelines. Viruses are the dominant cause of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in children, as has been shown in many previous studies. Unnecessary antibiotic therapy should be avoided so that it does not affect patients' health and lead to the development of resistant bacterial strains.
