Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how native microbial communities in an estuarine environment can break down the antibiotics enrofloxacin (ENR) and oxytetracycline (OXY) using sediment samples from the Douro river estuary.
  • Over one month, the experiments showed that the microbial cultures could remove up to 98% of ENR and over 95% of OXY, with their removal not affected by the presence of both antibiotics together.
  • The study found that ENR was mainly biodegraded biologically, while OXY removal relied more on non-biological processes, and the presence of these antibiotics reduced microbial diversity, favoring certain bacteria like those from the phylum Proteobacteria.

The current research work aimed to describe the roles of ultrasonic power under sono-Fenton process in the degradation of flumequine (FLU) in water. For this purpose, the effects of some parameters including temperature, ferrous ion concentration, chemical oxidant concentration (SO and Cl) and the initial pH value of the reaction kinetics were investigated. Results showed that the degradation of FLU antibiotic was accelerated by ultrasonic irradiation and the presence of an inorganic oxidant.
