Acellular dermal matrix imaging features in breast reconstructive surgery: a pictorial review.

Acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) are biological engineered tissues, which may provide an immunologically inert scaffold in breast reconstruction. Since the literature on imaging features of ADMs is limited, radiologists must be aware of the common imaging appearances of ADM, to differentiate normal conformation from residual or recurrent disease. Our purpose is to review the current role of ADMs in implant-based breast reconstruction, describing the normal imaging findings at ultrasound, mammography, and MRI also considering the possible changes over time.

Exploring the in vitro anticancer activities of Re(I) picolinic acid and its fluorinated complex derivatives on lung cancer cells: a structural study.

Fifteen rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes of the form fac-[Re(N,O')(CO)(X)], where N,O'-bidentate ligand = 2-picolinic acid (Pico); 3,5-difluoropyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Dfpc); 3-trifluoromethyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (Tfpc) and X = HO; pyrazole (Pz); pyridine (Py); imidazole (Im); and methanol (CHOH) were synthesized using the '2 + 1' mixed ligand approach with an average yield of 84%. The complexes were characterized using the following spectroscopic techniques: IR, H and C NMR, UV/Vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The effect of the fluorine atoms on the backbone of the N,O'-bidentate ligand was investigated and a trend was noticed in the carbonyl stretching frequencies: with Pico < Tfpc < Dfpc.

The structure of the title complex, [Ag(NO)(CHP)] , reveals a chain emanating from the coordination of one phosphine ligand to each silver(I) cation, as well as the bis-monodentate coordination of a bridging nitrato ligand (per Ag atom) and the bis-bidentate coordination of another bridging nitrato ligand (per Ag atom). The distorted four-coordinate Ag atoms are characterized by bonding angles that notably deviate from the ideal tetra-hedral shape.

The title Ag complex, [Ag(NO)(CHP)], reveals a distorted pseudo-trigonal-planar shape around the Ag atom geometry resulting from the coordination of two phosphine ligands, as well as a nitrito-,' ligand coordinating to the silver(I) atom through the oxygen atoms; in this description, the two oxygen atoms are assumed to occupy one position, forming an acute O-Ag-O angle of 51.44 (9)°. The plane resulting from the NO coordination to Ag is nearly perpendicular to the plane from the coordination of the phosphine-P atoms to Ag [dihedral angle = 86.

Rational Optimization of Dihydropyrimidinone-Quinoline Hybrids as Plasmodium falciparum Glutathione Reductase Inhibitors.

A series of dihydropyrimidinone-based antimalarial compounds were designed and synthesised based on the previously identified amide-based quinoline hybrids which showed good resistance reversal ability against the resistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum. The aromatic ring on the dihydropyrimidinone of the original hits was exchanged for a methyl group to bring the molecular weights below 500 Da and also determine the effect of the aromatic ring count on the resistance reversal ability of the hybrids. Apart from the previously used amide bond, the hybrid linker was also extended to the triazole linker.

An Advanced Surgical Dressing for High-risk Patients Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery: a Case-control Study.

Unlabelled: Oncological breast surgeries, classified as breast conserving surgery, oncoplastic surgery, and mastectomies (standard or with tissue sparing and reconstruction), are burdened with an overall complication rate up to 33%. Aquacel Ag Surgical is a combined hydrofiber-hydrocolloids dressing. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of surgical site complications in patients presenting with three or more risk factors (or two, of which at least one classified as "high risk"), undergoing breast cancer surgery with/without reconstruction, comparing advanced (Aquacel Ag Surgical) with traditional dressing.

Chelated Fischer carbene complexes of annulated thiophenes: synthesis, structure and electrochemistry.

Two (thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) and three annulated thiophenes (dithieno[2,3-b;3',2'-d]thiophene and dithieno[3,2-b;2',3'-d]thiophene) were employed as building blocks to synthesize linear or semi-circular chelated mononuclear biscarbene and dinuclear tetracarbene complexes. The electronic properties of the annulated thienylene chelated carbene complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry experiments and compared to non-chelated Fischer-type monocarbene complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to assign the redox events and to probe the extent of electron delocalisation as well as the possibility of electronic (intramolecular metal-metal) communication as a result of intervalence.

Closed Incision Negative Pressure Therapy in Oncological Breast Surgery: Comparison with Standard Care Dressings.

Background: Negative pressure wound therapy was developed for treating wounds associated with unfavorable healing factors. The principles of the negative pressure wound therapy applied on clean and closed surgical incision originate the closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT). We evaluated the use of ciNPT in the setting of oncological breast surgery.

Soft Tissue Reconstructions with Dermal Substitutes Versus Alternative Approaches in Patients with Traumatic Complex Wounds.

The use of dermal substitutes is considered an effective treatment in several pathologies involving skin damage, mainly extensive burns and trauma. Treatment alternatives entail performing flaps or autografts. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to assess the clinical effects and cost-effectiveness of dermal substitutes in surgical procedure in complex wound healings of adult trauma patients.

Neurotube for facial nerve repair.

Facial nerve reconstruction for lesions with nerve gaps frequently require autologous or tubulized grafts of biological or synthetic origin. Neurotube, a bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid tube, represents a valid solution for this kind of defect in emergency and planned surgery. Seven posttraumatic lesions of terminal branches of the facial nerve were repaired by means of Neurotube from September 1999-September 2001.

Development of a novel self-medicating applicator for control of internal and external parasites of wild and domestic animals.

Four trials, three in the United States and one in South Africa, were conducted to evaluate the potential value of a novel self-medicating applicator in the passive control of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle and deer, and of files and ticks on cattle using oil-based treatments. The results of the trials demonstrated that this applicator is an effective and practical device for the passive treatment of both deer and cattle for trichostrongyle infections using the endectocide, moxidectin (Cydectin. Fort Dodge Animal Health, USA), of cattle for hom fly (Haemotobia irritans) infestations using the insecticide, cyfluthrin (CyLence, Bayer AG, Germany) and of cattle for tick infestations (in particular Amblyomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus) using the acaricides deltamethrin and amitraz (Delete All, Intervet, South Africa).

Clinical evaluation of anaemia in sheep: early trials.

Trials were conducted on a farm in Mpumalanga Province in South Africa to test the possibility of grading the colour of the ocular mucous membranes of sheep as an indication of the extent to which the animals are affected by Haemonchus contortus infection. The range of observed colour shades were classified into five categories, from red, through red-pink, pink and pink-white to white. Over a period of 125 days routine drenching of a flock of 388 sheep on irrigated kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) pasture was terminated.

Molineus cati n. sp. (Nematoda, Trichostrongylina, Molineoidea), a parasite of feral cats, Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758 in South Africa.

A new species of the genus Molineus Cameron, 1923 was recovered from feral cats, Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758, in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Because of a caudal bursa with rays of the 2-1-2 type, but with the extremities of rays 4 nearer those of rays 3 than those of rays 5, the new species is closely related to seven Neotropical Molineus spp., four parasitic in Primates, two parasitic in Mustelidae and one a parasite of Procyonidae.

Quality control in generic anthelmintics: is it adequate?

We became increasingly concerned about indications of possible substandard efficacy of some generic anthelmintics, particularly after P.C. van Schalkwyk (personal communication, 1990) had found some batches of imported generic products obtained from international brokers to be poorly active, despite apparently normal physical characteristics.

Wildlife parasites: lessons for parasite control in livestock.

For sustainable livestock production it is suggested that the parasitologist take a leaf out of Nature's book in the search for solutions to the mounting problems concerning parasite control. While the farmer has come to regard all parasites affecting livestock as entirely without benefit, indigenous parasites and diseases are normal and play an essential role as interacting components of a natural environment in an ecosystem such as the 19,000 km2-sized Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa. The parasites help to select their hosts for fitness and are assisted by predators and intra-species territorial aggression which continually eliminate the weak individuals from the system.

How long before resistance makes it impossible to control some field strains of Haemonchus contortus in South Africa with any of the modern anthelmintics?

This paper describes an exceptional spectrum of multiple anthelmintic resistance in two strains of Haemonchus contortus in South Africa, one from Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, and the other from Badplaas, in Mpumalanga. Apparently for the first time, a helminth strain is described with resistance to compounds from all five of the modern anthelmintic groups used for nematode control in sheep; also, two strains of H. contortus show resistance to the two substituted phenols, dinitrophenol and nitroxynil.

Cryopreservation of sheathed third-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum (hookworm of dogs) and Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworm of cats).

Sheathed infective third-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum and Ancylostoma tubaeforme were successfully cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The survival rates, as assessed by motility, were A. caninum 49.

[Our experience with a new material for skin graft areas].

The authors describe a new method of medicating disepidermised areas from which a dermo-epidermic graft has been removed to cover burn areas or following post-traumatic loss of substance. This method consists of the use of a thin microfibrillar film of a polysaccharidic type, which serves as a temporary substitute for the skin, offering selective permeability, the possibility of transpiration and gaseous exchange, but at the same time being impermeable to liquids and microorganisms. A study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of this new dressing, involving 30 patients of both sexes aged between 9 and 87 years old.
