Renal Failure in Pregnancy.

Renal failure during pregnancy affects both mother and fetus, and may be related to preexisting disease or develop secondary to diseases of pregnancy. Causes include hypovolemia, sepsis, shock, preeclampsia, thrombotic microangiopathies, and renal obstruction. Treatment focuses on supportive measures, while pharmacologic treatment is viewed as second-line therapy, and is more useful in mitigating harmful effects than treating the underlying cause.

Obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) develops insidiously in nearly half of all lung transplant recipients. Although typically preceded by a CD8(+) T cell-rich lymphocytic bronchitis, it remains unresponsive to conventional immunosuppression. Using an airflow permissive model to study the role of gases flowing over the transplanted airway, it is shown that prolonged inhalation of sublethal doses of carbon monoxide (CO), but not nitric oxide (NO), obliterate the appearance of the obstructive airway lesion.

Late measures of brain injury after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia in mice.

Background And Purpose: This work was undertaken to determine to what degree long-term neurofunctional outcome of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury in mice correlates with anatomical extent of cerebral damage assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histopathology.

Methods: On postnatal day 7, mice were subjected to HI. At 7 to 9 weeks after HI neurofunctional outcome was assessed by water-maze, rota-rod, and open-field test performance, followed by cerebral MRI and histopathology evaluation.
