Key Clinical Message: Even in the absence of other symptoms or other pulmonary manifestations suggesting Sjögren's syndrome (SS), it is necessary to include SS in the differential diagnosis of diffuse cystic lung disease (CLD).

Abstract: A case of SS that presented initially with diffuse CLD is reported. This case is considered rare because diffuse pulmonary cysts were observed in the early stage with few symptoms, only cysts were observed without other lung lesions on imaging, cyst formation was histologically considered to be alveolar loss, and airway lesions not observed on imaging were suspected based on lung function testing.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers reviewed data from 130 IPF patients who underwent AFT between 2009 and 2019, noting factors like age, sex, and pulmonary function, but found no significant differences in outcomes based on CCIS scores.
  • * While the CCIS did not correlate with disease outcomes overall, a longer duration of AFT appeared to improve results for patients with a low CCIS score.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the rates and impact of respiratory bacterial infections in Japanese patients hospitalized with COVID-19, finding that 7.5% of patients experienced such infections.
  • The most common causes of these infections included Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, with more severe outcomes linked to hospital-acquired infections and pre-existing health conditions.
  • The research highlights the importance of monitoring and assessing bacterial complications in COVID-19 patients, as these infections can significantly increase mortality rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the impact of non-respiratory bacterial and fungal infections on hospitalized COVID-19 patients, focusing on the types of infections, their causative organisms, and their effects on mortality rates.
  • Out of 1914 patients, 4.2% developed non-respiratory bacterial infections, predominantly bacteremia, which was linked to a higher risk of death, particularly in patients with certain predisposing factors.
  • The findings highlight the need for effective medical strategies to manage secondary infections in COVID-19 patients, especially those at a greater risk, such as older individuals and those admitted to intensive care.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed RNA-seq data from 465 blood samples, uncovering 1169 expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) and 1549 splice QTLs (sQTLs) linked to COVID-19 severity, including immune-related expressions.
  • * The study highlights the impact of disease severity on gene expression, identifying specific eQTLs that interact with COVID-19 phenotypes, and provides an extensive resource for understanding gene regulation in response to the virus.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 2,393 COVID-19 patients and 3,289 controls in Japan, identifying a specific genetic variant (rs60200309-A) on chromosome 5 linked to severe cases in individuals under 65.
  • The variant is more common in East Asians and associated with reduced expression of the DOCK2 gene, which was found to be lower in severe COVID-19 cases, particularly in non-classical monocytes.
  • Additionally, inhibiting DOCK2 in hamsters worsened pneumonia symptoms, indicating its potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target for severe COVID-19.

Background: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has been rapidly evolving and increasingly performed in patients with ground-glass opacity (GGO) predominant lung cancer (GGOp-LC).

Purpose: To evaluate early-phase CT findings of GGOp-LC after SBRT.

Materials And Methods: Patients with GGOp-LC staged as cTis-2bN0M0 treated with SBRT were retrospectively identified.

Background: Pneumonia is a common disease among the aging population in Japan. Hence, it is important to elucidate the risks related to pneumonia mortality. Since is the most commonly observed pathogen, pneumococcal vaccination is recommended to older adults.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of corticosteroids in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with varying severity, particularly those not requiring invasive ventilation.
  • Conducted across 30 hospitals in Japan, the research analyzed 1,092 patients to compare outcomes for those receiving corticosteroids versus those who did not, using adjusted data.
  • Results showed that patients receiving corticosteroids had lower odds of improvement on Day 15, but faster improvement in radiological findings and a shorter duration of invasive mechanical ventilation was noted in the corticosteroid group.

We investigated the clinical course of individuals with 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) who were transferred from the Diamond Princess cruise ship to 12 local hospitals. The conditions and clinical courses of patients with pneumonia were compared with those of patients without pneumonia. Among 70 patients (median age: 67 years) analyzed, the major symptoms were fever (64.

Purpose. The predictive factor of response to antituberculous therapy has not been fully elucidated. Airway acidity has been thought to be a potential indicator of the bactericidal activity.

Introduction: Lung and gastric cancers are the first and second leading causes of death from cancer worldwide, and are especially prevalent in Eastern Asia. Relatively few reports are available in relation to the treatment and outcome of synchronous lung and gastric cancers, although there are increasing numbers of patients with these cancers. Efforts to develop more effective drugs for the treatment of synchronous cancers, without serious adverse effects, have been intensifying.
