Antineoplastic properties of polyphenols in TPC-1 human papillary thyroid carcinoma cell line: a systematic review.

Thyroid cancer usually responds to surgical and ablative therapy, but when it's refractory the alternative lies in tyrosine kinase inhibitors that, in addition to harmful side effects, acts only in a palliative way. The concern for other therapeutic possibilities brought evidence on flavonoids, hypothesizing a possible strategy. This review aimed to organize a compilation of studies using polyphenol substances in TPC-1 (human papillary thyroid carcinoma cell line) summarizing it's results and describing the metabolic pathways involved.

Mathematical modeling on obligate mutualism: Interactions between leaf-cutter ants and their fungus garden.

We propose a simple mathematical model by applying Michaelis-Menton equations of enzyme kinetics to study the mutualistic interaction between the leaf cutter ant and its fungus garden at the early stage of colony expansion. We derive sufficient conditions on the extinction and coexistence of these two species. In addition, we give a region of initial condition that leads to the extinction of two species when the model has an interior attractor.

[Palliative care team support services by the hospital for home palliation].

At Osaka National Hospital, we opened a palliative care team (PCT) since July 2004. The PCT advises the symptom management of cancer patients and supports patients' decision making. By March 2006, 355 consecutive cancer patients referred to the PCT, including 221 patients with psychiatric symptoms.

Angioarchitectural arrangements in corrosion cast of the nasal septum of the Mongolian gerbil.

The three-dimensional architecture of the vascular network of the nasal septum of the gerbil rat was studied using the corrosive resin cast technique. The angioarchitecture of the nasal septum observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that a vascular network is disposed in the lamina propria. The capillaries, arterioles, venules and arteries were closely observed in different areas of the nasal septum mucosa.

Monoclonality of infiltrating plasma cells in primary pulmonary nodular amyloidosis: detection with polymerase chain reaction.

Aims: To investigate the relation between localised amyloidosis and immunocytic dyscrasia.

Methods: Open lung biopsy specimens from a 72 year old man with multiple nodules in the right middle and lower lung were stained with haematoxylin-eosin, Congo red, and antibodies against IgG, IgA, IgM, and kappa and lambda light chains. Semi-nested PCR amplification for the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene was performed using consensus primers for the VDJ region of the IgH gene, FR3A, LJH, and VLJH.

Three-dimensional angioarchitecture of tongue corrosion casts from normal young rats.

The three-dimensional architecture of the vascular network of the rat's lingual papillae has been studied employing the corrosive resin cast technique. The casts of the microvasculature of these types of papillae (the small conical filiform, true filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae) have been observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microvascular arrangements of the filiform papillae consist of well-defined simple or twisted capillary loops.
