In this study, we examined the effect of a bundled approach to blood collection for blood culture on decreasing contamination. Commensal organisms were considered contaminants on the basis of the clinical course if they were recovered from only a single blood draw (set) and if a positive result for two sets was not obtained within 72 hours. The main elements of the bundle were blood collection by venipuncture, skin preparation with a chlorhexidine alcohol swab, disinfection of culture bottles, and use of a sterile blood transfer device instead of the two-needle technique for inoculation.

In the field of cancer care, it is still difficult to say that advance care planning(ACP)has been fully integrated, and the perceptions of ACP vary depending on the individual's role. Since oncologists have a deeper understanding of the patient's condition and prognosis than the patients themselves, they are often the first to recognize the future need for ACP. It is important to gather and incorporate patients' preferences and relevant information regarding ACP early in the course of daily cancer treatment.

In Bangladesh, the Buriganga River is heavily polluted with multiple antibiotics, which can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. In this study, we performed the first investigation of seasonal variations in the occurrence and spatial distribution of 29 antibiotics in the Buriganga River, Bangladesh, from wet season (August 2019) and dry season (February 2020).

Objective: Dementia affects more than 55 million people worldwide. Use of restraints for hospitalized older adults with dementia is a social issue that should be addressed systematically and should not depend on the characteristics of nurses. This study reviewed the literature on organizational factors associated with reducing use of restraints in older adults with dementia admitted to acute care hospitals.

[Participants and Methods] The participants were 30 patients who were diagnosed with esophageal cancer, underwent surgery, and fulfilled their conditions. Preoperative physical activity was measured using the step count, and metabolic equivalents as the amount of physical activity.

Methods: This single-center randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study enrolled 32 patients aged ≥ 18 years, undergoing scheduled laparoscopic surgery. The EMG electrode NM-345Y™ was attached to one forearm using the Nihon-Kohden method (Pattern N-K) and the other forearm using our novel method (Pattern Cross).
Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia are prone to intrapulmonary thrombosis owing to excessive inflammation and platelet activation. Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN) with ring sideroblasts and thrombocytosis (RS-T) is a rare disease in MDS/MPN overlap entities. Patients with MDS/MPN RS-T are known to be at a high risk of thrombosis, and platelet count control with drug therapy does not necessarily reduce this risk.

Methods: Nosocomial occurrence of COVID-19 was compared between periods with national infectious disease category 5 versus the preceding category 2 equivalent. Changes in the revised manual included a shorter duration of work restrictions for infected health care practitioners (HCPs); no work restriction for HCPs exposed to SARS-CoV-2 with a negative test on days 1, 3 and 5; discontinuation of universal pre-admission screening; and pre-emptive isolation of patients without screening.
Aim: The Mental Health Supporter Training Program is a national project conducted in Japan. This study aimed to determine the effects on mental health-related stigma, mental health literacy, and knowledge about mental health difficulties and support techniques among program participants.
Methods: The target population was local residents of a wide range of generations in Japan.
Key Clinical Message: This case highlights the pitfalls and provides tips for the extraction of deeply implanted lumenless leads, and encourages careful lead selection in the current era of widespread left bundle branch area pacing.
Abstract: The extraction of cardiovascular implantable electronic device leads is sometimes complicated. We describe a case with difficult but successful extraction of SelectSecure, a lumenless permanent pacemaker lead, implanted deep in the ventricular septum, highlighting its pitfalls and tips in the current era of left bundle branch area pacing.
Immunological mechanisms through the activation of CD4-positive T-cells have been assumed to be involved in the pathogenesis of giant cell arteritis (GCA). Many studies employing frozen tissues of temporal artery biopsy, peripheral blood lymphocytes, and plasma of GCA patients have revealed the contribution of interferon-γ and interleukin-17 in both protein and mRNA levels. However, the analyses using formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens, in which the correlation between histopathologic pictures and immunological circumstances would be elucidated, have been limited.

In electromyography (EMG)-based neuromuscular monitoring using the EMG electrodes (NM-345Y™, Nihon-Kohden Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) following the manufacturer-recommended attachment method, the accuracy of neuromuscular monitoring may be reduced when forearm limb position is changed. We previously devised a novel attachment method for NM-345Y™ stimulating electrodes in adult volunteers to maintain stable monitoring accuracy despite changes in forearm position.

However, the information regarding dermal exposure via direct contact with a product is limited. In addition, in the commonly used dermal permeability test, the target substance is dissolved in a solvent, which is unrealistic.

In this study, the effects of rice varieties and water management practices on the concentrations of arsenic and trace metals in rice grains were investigated to reduce human health risks related to rice consumption. In addition, the performance of risk reduction using the optimum combination of rice variety and water management practices was quantitatively assessed using Monte Carlo simulation, in which non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk distributions under the status quo and the optimum combination were compared.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the characteristics of the throwing movement of an elongated implement by comparing throwing movement between a javelin and baseball.
Methods: Twelve male javelin throwers were asked to perform a javelin throw (JT) and a baseball long toss (LT) twice.
A male patient in his 80s underwent colonic stenting for obstructive sigmoid colon cancer with multiple liver metastases. With systemic chemotherapy for approximately 1 year, the liver metastasis disappeared, so laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy was performed for the primary lesion. No recurrence was observed for a while, although CT revealed liver metastasis in the liver S4, and radiofrequency ablation was performed.
