Background: Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solutions are frequently used plasma expanders. We examined the effects of medium-HES (mean molecular weight of 130,000 dalton) and low-HES (mean molecular weight of 70,000 dalton) on the survival rates (Exp. I), colloid osmotic pressure (COP) (Exp.

We conducted a multicenter prospective trial to evaluate the efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics of a single dose of rituximab (375 mg/m(2) body surface area) for the treatment of children with refractory steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (SDNS). All patients (n = 12) were able to discontinue steroids at a median of 74 days after treatment. The frequency of relapses per 6 months was significantly reduced and the steroid-free period per 6 months was significantly increased after treatment compared with those before treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral salt wasting (CSW) commonly occurs after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), impacting blood volume and potentially increasing the risk of complications like cerebral vasospasm.
  • A study used a rat model to investigate CSW by measuring urine sodium excretion and analyzing blood parameters before and after SAH induced by artery perforation.
  • The findings indicated that SAH rats excreted more sodium and had lower concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), while brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels remained unchanged, suggesting that their influence is not responsible for CSW.

Article Synopsis
  • - The use of theophylline as a bronchodilator has decreased over the past 20 years, but it can still play a key role during emergency asthma attacks, often in combination with other medications.
  • - Recent studies indicate theophylline may be beneficial for managing both stable and exacerbated asthma, though it has a low therapeutic index, meaning the effective dose is close to the toxic level.
  • - Physicians must understand the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, especially for elderly patients, who may require dosage adjustments due to factors like reduced clearance and interactions with other medications; therapeutic drug monitoring is essential after starting treatment.
