Characterizing the Biomedical Data-Sharing Landscape.

Advances in technologies and biomedical informatics have expanded capacity to generate and share biomedical data. With a lens on genomic data, we present a typology characterizing the data-sharing landscape in biomedical research to advance understanding of the key stakeholders and existing data-sharing practices. The typology highlights the diversity of data-sharing efforts and facilitators and reveals how novel data-sharing efforts are challenging existing norms regarding the role of individuals whom the data describe.

Importance of Participant-Centricity and Trust for a Sustainable Medical Information Commons.

Drawing on a landscape analysis of existing data-sharing initiatives, in-depth interviews with expert stakeholders, and public deliberations with community advisory panels across the U.S., we describe features of the evolving medical information commons (MIC).

What is a Medical Information Commons?

A 2011 National Academies of Sciences report called for an "Information Commons" and a "Knowledge Network" to revolutionize biomedical research and clinical care. We interviewed 41 expert stakeholders to examine governance, access, data collection, and privacy in the context of a medical information commons. Stakeholders' attitudes about MICs align with the NAS vision of an Information Commons; however, differences of opinion regarding clinical use and access warrant further research to explore policy and technological solutions.

Genomic Data-Sharing Practices.

Making data broadly accessible is essential to creating a medical information commons (MIC). Transparency about data-sharing practices can cultivate trust among prospective and existing MIC participants. We present an analysis of 34 initiatives sharing DNA-derived data based on public information.

The aim of this study was to determine the extent of tutor variability in assessing the PBL process in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago.

Early Childhood Caries in 3 to 5 Year Old Children in Trinidad and Tobago.

Background: This study was done to evaluate the prevalence and contributory factors of early childhood caries (ECC) and severe ECC (S-ECC) among preschool children of Kindergartens and Early Childhood Centres in Trinidad and Tobago.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving 342 preschool children aged 3 to 5 years. The school staff distributed a structured questionnaire to the children to be completed by the mother.

Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of High Internal Phase Emulsions with Ultra-Low Volume Fraction of Graphene Oxide.

Thermal conductivity enhancement in a multiphase fluid such as water-in-oil emulsion can substantially improve efficacies in a broad range of applications. However, nanoparticle additives that are often used to do so can catastrophically destabilize a delicate emulsion system, in our case, a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE), whereas large concentration of additives can adversely impact practical processing aspects. Therefore, means to enhance the thermal conductivity of emulsions with a minute concentration of additives (<1 wt %) is a major scientific challenge.

Exome sequencing disclosures in pediatric cancer care: Patterns of communication among oncologists, genetic counselors, and parents.

Objective: To examine communication patterns and behaviors during disclosure of exome sequencing (ES) results to parents of pediatric cancer patients, and describe common themes in parental communication.

Methods: Using mixed methods, we analyzed transcripts of sessions where parents of pediatric cancer patients received ES results from an oncologist and genetic counselor. Seventy-six transcripts were analyzed for frequency of clinician information-giving, partnering-supportive talk, and active parent participation.

Estimation of Pneumonic Plague Transmission in Madagascar, August-November 2017.

Introduction: Between August and November 2017, Madagascar reported nearly 2500 cases of plague; the vast majority of these cases were pneumonic, resulting in early exponential growth due to person-to-person transmission. Though plague is endemic in Madagascar, cases are usually bubonic and thus result in considerably smaller annual caseloads than those observed from August-November 2017.

Methods: In this study, we consider the transmission dynamics of pneumonic plague in Madagascar during this time period, as well as the role of control strategies that were deployed to curb the outbreak and their effectiveness.

One key question that remains is whether such neurodevelopmental abnormalities are limited to the recently evolved Asiatic ZIKV strains or if they can also be induced by endemic African strains. Thus, we examined birth registries from one particular hospital from a country in West Africa, where ZIKV is endemic.

United States: law and policy concerning transfer of genomic data to third countries.

This paper provides an overview of US laws and related guidance documents affecting transfer of genomic data to third countries, addressing the domains of consent, privacy, security, compatible processing/adequacy, and oversight. In general, US laws governing research and disclosure and use of data generated within the health care system do not impose different requirements on transfers to researchers and service providers based in third countries compared with US-based researchers or service providers. Of note, the US lacks a comprehensive data protection regime.

Strategic design of thiophene-fused nickel dithiolene derivatives for efficient NLO response.

The NLO properties of two synthesized aryl extended thiophene fused nickel dithiolenes have been studied theoretically. Based on these two systems, a systematic modification has been made by substituting neutral and zwitterionic donor-acceptor groups at the aryl (phenyl and thenyl) ring to enlarge their NLO responses. Among the four designed systems, the zwitterionic donor-acceptor group significantly reduces the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, resulting in an enormous increase in the first hyperpolarizability (β) values.

Breakdown of Magnetic Order in the Pressurized Kitaev Iridate β-Li_{2}IrO_{3}.

Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffraction under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Néel temperature of β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} increases with the slope of 0.9  K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field H_{c} reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order.
