Clinico-Pathological Significance of Tumor Infiltrating Immune Cells in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma-Hope or Hype?

Background: To correlate between immunohistochemical expression of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and natural killer (NK) cells with the AJCC 8th edition TNM staging system and other disease-modifying clinico-pathological variables.

Methods: The representative histology sections of tumor invasive margin (IM) and tumor core (TC) were selected according to the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group and were subjected to immunohistochemistry with antibodies for TILs (CD3, CD8, FOXP3), NK Cells (CD57), TAMs (CD68, CD163) and pan-leukocyte marker (CD45). Histo-immuno-density-intensity (HIDI) scoring was calculated as a product of the proportion and intensity of staining.

AS3MT Gene Variant Shows Association with Skin Lesions in an Arsenic Exposed Population of India.

AS3MT, GSTO2, and GSTP1 genes play important roles in the arsenic biotransformation pathway, while CYP2E1 gene has a prominent role in the metabolic activation of xenobiotics. Hence, polymorphisms of these genes might have an effect on arsenic biotransformation and could impact susceptibility to arsenical skin lesions in individuals of chronic arsenic toxicity. The present case-control study, comprising 148 subjects, attempted to evaluate genetic association between nine polymorphisms of AS3MT, GSTO2, GSTP1 and CYP2E1 genes and arsenical skin lesions in a West Bengal (WB) population.

Level V Metastases in Node-Positive Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Beyond Level IIA and III.

Introduction: Surgical management of level V in clinically node positive (cN+) oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) is controversial. The objectives of the study were to identify predictors of level V metastases in cN+ OSCC.

Methods: This retrospective study is based on institutional data of operated cN+ OSCC between April 2018 and December 2022.

Unveiling the fibrotic puzzle of endometriosis: An overlooked concern calling for prompt action.

Endometriosis is a benign, estrogen-dependent, persistent chronic inflammatory heterogeneous condition that features fibrotic adhesions caused by periodic bleeding. The characteristic ectopic lesions are marked by a widely spread dense fibrotic interstitium comprising of fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, collagen fibers, extracellular proteins, inflammatory cells, and active angiogenesis. Fibrosis is now recognized as a critical component of endometriosis because of which current treatments, such as hormonal therapy and surgical excision of lesions are largely ineffective with severe side effects, high recurrence rates, and significant morbidity.

A novel family of beta mixture models for the differential analysis of DNA methylation data: An application to prostate cancer.

Identifying differentially methylated cytosine-guanine dinucleotide (CpG) sites between benign and tumour samples can assist in understanding disease. However, differential analysis of bounded DNA methylation data often requires data transformation, reducing biological interpretability. To address this, a family of beta mixture models (BMMs) is proposed that (i) objectively infers methylation state thresholds and (ii) identifies differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCs) given untransformed, beta-valued methylation data.

Vegetation disturbance and regrowth dynamics in shifting cultivation landscapes.

Shifting cultivation, an age-old agricultural practice, is a major factor in forest cover change across Southeast Asia, where repeated cycles of vegetation disturbance and regrowth lead to far-reaching environmental and socio-economic impacts. The present study aims to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation disturbance and regrowth caused by shifting cultivation in Tripura state of India, over the past three decades, utilizing temporal segmentation of time-series Landsat data. The study analyzed vegetation disturbance and regrowth patterns in a shifting cultivation landscape from 1991 to 2020 using normalized burn ratio trends through LandTrendr, validated by the TimeSync tool.

Submandibular Gland-Sparing Technique Versus En-Bloc Level IB Dissection in Oral Cavity Cancers with N0 Neck Status: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Importance: Metastases to the submandibular gland (SMG) from oral cavity primaries are very rare. Hence, a gland-preserving level IB dissection technique is a feasible option without compromising the lymph node yield (LNY).

Objective: To assess the feasibility and noninferiority of the SMG-preserving dissection technique to the conventional en bloc removal of level IB in terms of LNY in patients with cN0 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) undergoing elective neck dissection.

A high abundance of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) in malignant cells makes them a prospective therapeutic target for basal breast tumors. Although EGFR inhibitors are in development as anticancer therapeutics, there exists limitations due to the dose-limiting cytotoxicity that limits their clinical utilization, thereby necessitating the advancement of effective inhibitors. In the present study, we have developed common pharmacophore hypotheses using 30 known EGFR inhibitors.

Simultaneously Enhancing Brightness and Purity of WSe Single Photon Emitter Using High-Aspect-Ratio Nanopillar Array on Metal.

A monolayer semiconductor transferred on nanopillar arrays provides site-controlled, on-chip single photon emission, which is a scalable light source platform for quantum technologies. However, the brightness of these emitters reported to date often falls short of the perceived requirement for such applications. Also, the single photon purity usually degrades as the brightness increases.

Motion of Two-Dimensional Excitons in Momentum Space Leads to Pseudospin Distribution Narrowing on the Bloch Sphere.

Motional narrowing implies narrowing induced by motion; for example, in nuclear magnetic resonance, the thermally induced random motion of the nuclei in an inhomogeneous environment leads to a counterintuitive narrowing of the resonance line. Similarly, the excitons in monolayer semiconductors experience magnetic inhomogeneity: the electron-hole spin-exchange interaction manifests as an in-plane pseudomagnetic field with a periodically varying orientation inside the exciton band. The excitons undergo random momentum scattering and pseudospin precession repeatedly in this inhomogeneous magnetic environment, typically resulting in fast exciton depolarization.

Desmoid fibromatosis-a diagnostic dilemma.

Purpose: Desmoid fibromatosis in head and neck is infrequent and poses a significant challenge to the clinicians due to its non-specific characteristics.

Methods: This case report focuses on a 69-year-old male who presented to a tertiary healthcare center in Karnataka, India with a swelling in the oral cavity.

Results: Despite initial suspicions of malignancy based on clinical examination and findings on computed tomography imaging, subsequent histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed an unexpected finding.

LSG vs OAGB: 7-Year Follow-up Data of a Randomised Control Trial and Comparative Outcome Based on BAROS Score.

Background: This study aims to evaluate and compare long-term results of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) based on bariatric analysis reporting and outcome system (BAROS) score.

Materials And Methods: Patients operated for morbid obesity between 2013 and 2015 were randomised to LSG and OAGB groups. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 201 patients (100 LSG and 101 OAGB) were analysed for changes in total body weight (TBW), body mass index (BMI), percent excess weight loss (%EWL), percent total weight loss (%TWL), QoL (quality of life) scores, comorbidity resolution and outcome based on BAROS at 7 years.

Oxidant and antioxidant status among tobacco users: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Smokeless and smoking tobacco use results in increased oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, which play a major role in the causation of cancer in tobacco habituates. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product of lipid peroxidation, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), the main enzymes in the antioxidant defense system, are assessed among tobacco users. This study gave insight into the relationship between tobacco use, oxidative stress, and antioxidant enzyme activity.

Long-term swallow outcomes and factors affecting swallowing dysfunction and quality of life among oral cancer patients: a prospective observational study.

Background: Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers among the Indian population. India bears the most burden of oral cancer globally. Impairment of swallowing function is often seen after treatment for oral cancer.

Harmonic to anharmonic tuning of moiré potential leading to unconventional Stark effect and giant dipolar repulsion in WS/WSe heterobilayer.

Excitonic states trapped in harmonic moiré wells of twisted heterobilayers is an intriguing testbed for exploring many-body physics. However, the moiré potential is primarily governed by the twist angle, and its dynamic tuning remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate anharmonic tuning of moiré potential in a WS/WSe heterobilayer through gate voltage and optical power.

Observation of ~100% valley-coherent excitons in monolayer MoS through giant enhancement of valley coherence time.

In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, valley coherence degrades rapidly due to a combination of fast scattering and inter-valley exchange interaction. This leads to a sub-picosecond valley coherence time, making coherent manipulation of exciton a highly challenging task. Using monolayer MoS sandwiched between top and bottom graphene, here we demonstrate fully valley-coherent excitons by observing ~100% degree of linear polarization in steady state photoluminescence.

Revisiting the Predictive Factors for Nodal Metastasis in Oral Cancers-a Leap Towards Personalized Patient Treatment Approach.

The incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma is steadily increasing globally, and even with a better understanding of tumor biology and advanced treatment modalities, the survival of OSCC patients is still not improved. A single metastatic cervical node can decrease survival by 50%. Our study intends to identify the clinical, radiological, and histological factors, significant for nodal metastasis in the pretreatment setting.

Preoperative and postoperative optimisation of patients undergoing thyroid surgery: a multicentre quality improvement project at Barts Health NHS Trust.

Hypocalcaemia following thyroid surgery can occur in up to 38% of patients. With over 7100 thyroid surgeries performed in 2018 in the UK, this is a common postoperative complication. Undertreated hypocalcaemia can result in cardiac arrhythmias and death.

Clinicopathological Difference Between Gingivobuccal and Oral Tongue Cancers: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study from a Tertiary Healthcare Centre in Northern India.

Gingivobuccal and oral tongue squamous cell carcinomas are commonly considered together as a single clinical entity for staging and treatment purposes. Though there is data suggesting a significant difference between SCC of various oral cavity subsites, very few studies have compared clinicopathological characteristics between the tongue and gingivobuccal primaries. We retrospectively analysed 225 patients with biopsy-proven gingivobuccal (GB) and oral tongue (OT) SCC operated between April 1, 2018 and April 30, 2021 in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh, India to compare their clinicopathological characteristics.

Cysticercosis Infested Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap Reconstruction: An Ethical Dilemma.

Disseminated cysticercosis is a rare manifestation of cysticercosis, a relatively common tropical disease in Asia, Africa and South America. Here the embryo of pork tapeworm gets disseminated to multiple organs and tissues via hepatoportal system. we report here a 45 year gentleman with stage IV oral malignancy who was incidentally found to have disseminated cysticercosis on pre-operative work up.

Significance of the prime factors regulating arsenic toxicity and associated health risk: a hypothesis-based investigation in a critically exposed population of West Bengal, India.

The suffering from arsenic toxicity is a long-standing concern in Asian countries. The role of the key factors (arsenic intake, age and sex) regulating arsenic toxicity is aimed to evaluate for a severely exposed population from Murshidabad district, West Bengal. Mean arsenic concentrations in drinking water supplied through tube well, Sajaldhara treatment plant and pipeline were observed as 208, 27 and 54 µg/l, respectively.
