Introduction: Clinical observations suggest that repeated injury within a week after a traumatic event impairs the regeneration of tissues. Our aim was to investigate the effect of repeated trauma on the proliferation of satellite cells in skeletal muscle tissue.

Materials And Methods: Cold lesion injury was performed in the soleus muscle and in the motor cortex of anesthetized male Wistar rats 0, 1, or 2 times with 7 day intervals between the interventions.

Edgewise orthodontic treatment utilizes a force couple in order to achieve labial-lingual tooth angulation. Two self-ligating brackets (Damon Q and Speed) were examined across a range of clinically relevant torques in order to assess the loading and unloading curves and bracket deformation. A previously developed torquing and load measurement system was utilized to rotate a 0.

Nitric oxide (NO) generating (NOGen) materials have been shown previously to create localized increases in NO concentration by the catalytic decomposition of blood S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) via copper (Cu)-containing polymer coatings and may improve extracorporeal circulation (ECC) hemocompatibility. In this work, a NOGen polymeric coating composed of a Cu⁰-nanoparticle (80 nm)-containing hydrophilic polyurethane (SP-60D-60) combined with the intravenous infusion of an RSNO, S- nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), is evaluated in a 4 h rabbit thrombogenicity model and the anti-thrombotic mechanism is investigated. Polymer films containing 10 wt.

Intravenous amperometric needle-type enzymatic glucose/lactate sensors intended for continuous monitoring are prepared with a novel nitric oxide (NO) releasing layer to improve device hemocompatibility. To create an underlying NO release coating, the sensors with immobilized enzymes (either glucose oxidase or lactate oxidase) are prepared with a thin layer of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) loaded with lipophilic diazeniumdiolate species that slowly release NO via a proton driven reaction. An outer thin layer (ca.

This review summarizes the hemorheological changes during gestation and their clinical relevance in pre-eclampsia. The gestational disease named pre-eclampsia, characterized by proteinuria (more than 0.3 g/day) and hypertension (blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg), exists from the 20th gestational week until the sixth postpartum week.

Introduction: Axial rotation of orthodontic wire produces buccal or lingual root movement and is often referred to as third-order movement or "torque expression." The objective of this study was to quantify torque expression in 3 self-ligation bracket systems (Damon Q, Ormco, Orange, Calif; In-Ovation R, GAC, Bohemia, NY; and Speed, Strite Industries, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada) during loading and unloading.

Methods: A stepper motor was used to rotate a wire in a fixed bracket slot from -15° to 63° in 3° increments, and then back to -15°.

Background: Invasive lobular cancer (ILC) is biologically distinct from invasive ductal cancer and there is disagreement regarding appropriate local management of this disease.

Aim: The current study reports long term results comparing mastectomy with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) in the treatment of ILC.

Material And Methods: Study includes 235 women with ILC treated between 1983 and 1987.

Hysteroscopy is a widely used endoscopic method, the "gold standard" for the examination of uterine cavity changes. Office hysteroscopy is an intervention that makes the accomplishment of ambulant examination, opposite to the traditional method. Due to the small diameter of the device the anesthesia is unnecessary, because there is no need of the dilatation of the cervix.

In all manufacturing processes there are tolerances; however, orthodontic bracket manufacturers seldom state the slot dimensional tolerances. This experiment develops a novel method of analyzing slot profile dimensions using photographs of the slot. Five points are selected along each wall, and lines are fitted to define a trapezoidal slot shape.

A hallmark of airways in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is highly refractory, chronic infections by several opportunistic bacterial pathogens. A recent study demonstrated that acidified sodium nitrite (A-NO(2)(-)) killed the highly refractory mucoid form of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a pathogen that significantly compromises lung function in CF patients (S. S.

A normal function of the thyroid gland during pregnancy is essential. Any change can affect both the pregnant woman and the fetus. Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in the brain development of the fetus, thus proper maternal free thyroid hormone levels are important especially during the first trimester.

Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate the dose distributions of high-dose-rate (HDR) prostate implants regarding target coverage, dose homogeneity, and dose to organs at risk.

Material And Methods: Treatment plans of 174 implants were evaluated using cumulative dose-volume histograms (DVHs). The planning was based on transrectal ultrasound (US) imaging, and the prescribed dose (100%) was 10 Gy.

Objective: The force moment providing rotation of the tooth around the x-axis (buccal-lingual) is referred to as torque expression in orthodontic literature. Many factors affect torque expression, including the wire material characteristics. This investigation aims to provide an experimental study into and comparison of the torque expression between wire types.

The Methanococcus maripaludis energy-conserving hydrogenase B (Ehb) generates low potential electrons required for autotrophic CO(2) assimilation. To analyze the importance of individual subunits in Ehb structure and function, markerless in-frame deletions were constructed in a number of M. maripaludis ehb genes.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly heterogeneous malignant tumor. Recent data suggests the presence of a hierarchical organization within the GBM cell population that involves cancer cells with stem-like behavior, capable of repopulating the tumor and contributing to its resistance to therapy. Tumor stem cells are thought to reside within a vascular niche that provides structural and functional support.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the number of needles on the quality of dose distributions in high-dose-rate (HDR) prostate implants regarding target coverage, dose homogeneity and dose to organs at risk. Treatment plans of 174 implants were evaluated using cumulative dose-volume histograms. The plans were divided into three groups according to the number of implanted needles: <15: LNG (low number group), 15-17: MNG (medium number group) and >17: HNG (high number group).

Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to reduce thrombogenicity by decreasing platelet and monocyte activation by the surface glycoprotein, P-selectin and the integrin, CD11b, respectively. In order to prevent platelet and monocyte activation with exposure to an extracorporeal circulation (ECC), a nitric oxide releasing (NORel) polymeric coating composed of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) blended with a lipophilic N-diazeniumdiolate was evaluated in a 4 h rabbit thrombogenicity model using flow cytometry. The NORel polymer significantly reduced ECC thrombus formation compared to polymer control after 4 h blood exposure (2.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of second breast-conserving surgery with reirradiation using perioperative high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy for the treatment of local recurrence developing after previous breast-conserving therapy.

Material And Methods: Between 1999 and 2007, twelve patients with isolated local recurrence initially treated for breast carcinoma with the use of conservative surgery and radiation therapy, underwent a repeat breast-conserving surgery and perioperative high-dose-rate multicatheter brachytherapy. Breast cancer related events, late side effects, and cosmetic results were assessed retrospectively.

Before the era of breast-conserving therapy, brachytherapy implants were used to treat large inoperable breast tumors. In later years, interstitial brachytherapy with rigid needles or multiple flexible catheters has been used to deliver an additional (boost) dose to the tumor bed after breast-conserving surgery and whole-breast irradiation. Reexcision followed by reirradiation using interstitial breast implants has also been implemented as an alternative to mastectomy to treat ipsilateral breast local recurrence after previous breast-conserving therapy.
