In patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in animal models, the increased accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) in retinal blood vessels strongly correlates with brain amyloid deposits and cognitive decline. The accumulation of Aβ in blood vessels may result from impaired transcytosis and a dysfunctional ocular glymphatic system in AD. High-dose fish oil (FO) supplementation has been shown to significantly change the expression of major facilitator superfamily domain-containing protein 2a (Mfsd2a), a key regulator of transcytosis, and Aquaporin 4 (Aqp4), an essential component of the glymphatic system in the retinas of WT mice.

This study presents the utilization of a novel, highly lipophilic nitric oxide (NO) donor molecule, S-nitroso-1-adamantanethiol (SNAT), for developing an NO-emitting polymer surface aimed at preventing thrombus formation and bacterial infection in extracorporeal circuits (ECCs). S-nitroso-1-adamantanethiol, a tertiary nitrosothiol-bearing adamantane species, was synthesized, characterized, and used to impregnate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing for subsequent in vivo evaluation. The impregnation process with SNAT preserved the original mechanical strength of the PVC.

Article Synopsis
  • Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome is a rare, unilateral eye condition characterized by granulomatous conjunctivitis and swollen lymph nodes, often caused by infections like cat scratch disease or tularemia.
  • A case study illustrates a 66-year-old man who developed this syndrome after eye injury from a twig and was treated successfully with antibiotics after initial symptoms suggested tularemia.
  • Diagnosis can be difficult, and if cat scratch disease is ruled out, other zoonotic infections like tularemia should be considered; timely treatment with fluoroquinolones or aminoglycosides is crucial for recovery.

  • Differentiating between granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion (CIMDL) is challenging due to similar histopathological features and ANCA profiles.
  • A young woman was initially diagnosed with GPA, but further tests revealed she actually had CIMDL from cocaine use, prompting a reassessment to "cocaine-induced GPA mimic."
  • To properly diagnose similar cases, urine tests for cocaine and HNE ELISA are recommended, and the primary treatment is to avoid cocaine use.

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have led to the creation of powerful generative AI methods and tools capable of producing text, code, images, and other media in response to user prompts. Significant interest in the technology has led to speculation about what fields, including visualization, can be augmented or replaced by such approaches. However, there remains a lack of understanding about which visualization activities may be particularly suitable for the application of generative AI.

Introduction: During fetal development, the proper development of neural and visual systems relies on the maternal supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids through placental transfer. Pregnant women are strongly advised to augment their diet with additional sources of omega-3, such as fish oil (FO). This supplementation has been linked to a reduced risk of preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, and perinatal depression.

Background: Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is the most common inherited mitochondrial disease characterized by bilateral, painless, subacute visual loss with a peak age of onset in the second to third decade. Historically, LHON was thought to be exclusively maternally inherited due to mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA); however, recent studies have identified an autosomal recessive form of LHON (arLHON) caused by point mutations in the nuclear gene, .

Case Presentations: In this study, we report the cases of three Eastern European individuals presenting with bilateral painless visual loss, one of whom was also exhibiting motor symptoms.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by amyloid β (Aβ) accumulation in the blood vessels and is associated with cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The increased accumulation of Aβ is also present in the retinal blood vessels and a significant correlation between retinal and brain amyloid deposition was demonstrated in living patients and animal AD models. The Aβ accumulation in the retinal blood vessels can be the result of impaired transcytosis and/or the dysfunctional ocular glymphatic system in AD and during aging.

Genetic information plays a pivotal role in species recognition and delimitation, but rare or extinct animals can be difficult to obtain genetic samples from. While natural history wet collections have proven invaluable in the description of novel species, the use of these historical samples in genetic studies has been greatly impeded by DNA degradation, especially because of formalin-fixation prior to preservation. Here, we use recently developed museum genomics approaches to determine the status of an isolated population of the elapid snake genus Hemachatus from Zimbabwe.
