Background: In endemic areas, Leishmania infantum and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) co-infection occurs in cats, and may favour a progressive course of feline leishmaniosis. Abnormalities in serum protein fractions have been reported, but inflammation markers have scarcely been studied. Erythrocyte sediment rate (ESR) is a marker of inflammation that is poorly used in veterinary medicine, but it has been evaluated in EDTA blood using a recently introduced automatic device.

Article Synopsis
  • Computed tomography (CT) can reveal unexpected lesions called "incidentalomas" during unrelated exams, creating uncertainty for veterinarians regarding their significance and necessary follow-up.
  • A study reviewed 561 CT scans from 512 dogs and 49 cats, finding 80 incidentalomas, primarily in dogs, with a notable correlation between age and occurrence.
  • The research highlights that specific breeds (like Boxers) and certain scan locations (neck, thoracic, abdominal) are linked to higher prevalence, suggesting a need for improved management and awareness by clinicians.

Loss of function (LoF) of TAR-DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) and mis-localization, together with TDP-43-positive and hyperphosphorylated inclusions, are found in post-mortem tissue of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients, including those carrying LoF variants in the progranulin gene (GRN). Modeling TDP-43 pathology has been challenging in vivo and in vitro. We present a three-dimensional induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived paradigm-mature brain organoids (mbOrg)-composed of cortical-like-astrocytes (iA) and neurons.

Mutations in the human progranulin (GRN) gene are a leading cause of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). While previous studies implicate aberrant microglial activation as a disease-driving factor in neurodegeneration in the thalamocortical circuit in Grn-/- mice, the exact mechanism for neurodegeneration in FTLD-GRN remains unclear. By performing comparative single-cell transcriptomics in the thalamus and frontal cortex of Grn-/- mice and patients with FTLD-GRN, we have uncovered a highly conserved astroglial pathology characterized by upregulation of gap junction protein GJA1, water channel AQP4, and lipid-binding protein APOE, and downregulation of glutamate transporter SLC1A2 that promoted profound synaptic degeneration across the two species.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 can infect a variety of cell types, severely affecting respiratory function and causing neurological symptoms in about one-third of COVID-19 cases.
  • Research using stem-cell-derived cortical organoids and human cortical tissue revealed that SARS-CoV-2 predominantly infects astrocytes in the brain, leading to increased inflammation and cellular stress.
  • Despite the lack of ACE2 expression in astrocytes, the presence of coreceptors CD147 and DPP4 is linked to the infection's severity, indicating that manipulating these coreceptors could influence the infection rate.

Many insects overwinter in diapause, a pre-programmed anticipated response to unfavorable environmental conditions, often induced by a short-day photoperiod. Diapause involves morphological changes and increased energy stores required for metabolic demands during winter. In diapausing mosquito eggs, the accumulation of lipids plays an important role, because these molecules are the primary fuel consumed during embryogenesis and pharate larvae metabolism, and have a key role in egg desiccation resistance.
