Electrochemically inserting and extracting hydrogen into and from solids are promising ways to explore materials' phases and properties. However, it is still challenging to identify the structural factors that promote hydrogen insertion and extraction and to develop materials whose functional properties can be largely modulated by inserting and extracting hydrogen through solid-state reactions at room temperature. In this study, guided by theoretical calculations on the energies of oxygen reduction and hydrogen insertion reactions with oxygen-deficient perovskite oxides, we demonstrated that the oxygen vacancy ordering in Sr(FeCo)O (SFCO) epitaxial films can be stabilized by increasing the Co content (x ≥ 0.

  • The study compares two techniques—Range-of-Motion (ROM) and Akagi's line—for aligning the tibial component in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to see how differently they align the tibia.
  • Results showed that the ROM technique generally led to a tibial component aligned 2.5° more externally than Akagi's line, particularly in knees with a smaller preoperative medial proximal tibial angle.
  • Overall, while the techniques produced different alignment values, they didn’t significantly differ in terms of tibial rotational movement during the procedure.

  • Advances in cancer treatment have shifted the focus from terminal care to chronic management, requiring nurses to possess updated knowledge and teamwork skills to provide effective patient-centered care.
  • A study conducted at a Japanese university hospital analyzed the support practices of nurses involved in cancer pharmacotherapy, revealing key differences based on their years of experience.
  • Findings indicated that nurses with more experience reported significantly lower scores in providing patient-centered care, highlighting the need for improved nursing education and collaboration to better support cancer patients.

Fast ion beams induce damage to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by chemical products, including secondary electrons, produced from interaction with liquid water in living cells. However, the production process of these chemical products in the Bragg peak region used in particle therapy is not fully understood. To investigate this process, we conducted experiments to evaluate the radiolytic yields produced when a liquid water jet in vacuum is irradiated with MeV-energy carbon beams.

Background: Spinal, pelvic, and lower extremity alignment is crucial for maintaining a healthy body posture. However, with aging, this posture becomes challenging to maintain due to muscle weakness and skeletal degeneration. Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and knee can also lead to abnormal posture, known as hip-spine and knee-spine syndrome.

We experienced a rare case in which iliopsoas abscess (IPA), caused by an Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing Proteus mirabilis, perforated and communicated with the ureter and caused sepsis. An 84-year-old woman, bedridden due to sequelae of a cerebral hemorrhage, was brought to our hospital with a chief complaint of fever lasting for 3 weeks. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a huge 180 × 110 × 100 mm IPA in the right iliopsoas muscle.

We evaluated the dissociation of isolated gas-phase nucleobase molecules induced by mega electron volt (MeV)-energy ions to gain fundamental insights into the reactions of nucleobases upon fast ion irradiation. We studied five nucleobase molecules-adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil-as gas-phase targets. We compared the fragmentation patterns obtained from carbon ion impacts with those obtained from proton impacts to clarify the effect of heavy ion irradiation.

  • Endoscopic lumbar discectomy (ELD) has two main methods: interlaminar (IELD) and transforaminal (TELD), with TELD having some challenges for inexperienced surgeons concerning dura mater visualization.
  • The hand down outside-in (HDOI) technique improves visualization by manipulating the cannula for better access, allowing safer removal of disc material.
  • A study showed that while both techniques improved patient outcomes, HDOI achieved 100% visualization of the dura mater compared to 60% for conventional TELD, making HDOI potentially more effective and safer for clinical use.

Simple radiography is the most frequently and widely available technology to examine bone pathologies. Computed tomography (CT) can evaluate pathologies more accurately in multiple planes and three dimensions; however, radiation exposure is much higher than with simple radiography. In addition, diagnostic ability is decreased for both technologies when metal devices are present.

Radiocarpal dislocation is an uncommon injury that is usually caused by high-energy trauma. Herein, we present two cases of dorsal radiocarpal dislocation with radial styloid fractures that were treated by arthroscopy-assisted reduction and internal fixation. Wrist arthroscopy provides accurate information on intra-articular fractures and carpal and/or intracarpal ligamentous tears of the radiocarpal joint.

  • * In a study, male mice were given L-theanine either orally or through injection, revealing that blood levels peaked 15 minutes post-administration with a bioavailability of around 70%.
  • * While L-theanine didn't alter overall amino acid levels, an increase in Glycine concentrations was noted, suggesting further research is needed to explore its relationship with sleep and anxiety effects.

  • This study investigates the time from diagnosis to surgery for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) and factors affecting its severity among 2074 cases in Japan from 1997 to 2018.
  • The median time to surgery was found to be 9 months, influenced by whether the patient used alcohol or corticosteroids, and the stage of joint destruction at diagnosis.
  • The study highlights that a large proportion of patients remain untreated for extended periods, but surgery was performed within 9 months for more than half of the patients, indicating the disease's serious impact.

Harnessing solar energy to produce value-added fuels and chemicals through photocatalysis techniques holds promise for establishing a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy economy. The intricate dynamics of photogenerated charge carriers lies at the core of the photocatalysis. The balance between charge trapping and band-edge recombination has a crucial influence on the activity of semiconductor photocatalysts.

  • * A questionnaire survey revealed that nearly all nurses expressed anxiety about the risk of fractures and paralysis, with 90% advocating for early orthopedic consultations to ease these concerns.
  • * Participation in a Bone Metastasis Cancer Board (BMCB) enhanced nurses' expectations for treatment and collaboration, highlighting the need for regular, functional BMCB meetings and specialist consultations to improve patient care.

Aims: To investigate the usefulness of novel clinical diagnostic criteria based on noninvasive examination findings to diagnose urodynamic detrusor underactivity (DU) in men.

Methods: We developed clinical diagnostic criteria to predict the presence of urodynamic DU in men as follows: (a) bladder voiding efficiency <70% on uroflowmetry, (b) existence of "sawtooth and interrupted waveforms" on uroflowmetry, and (c) ultrasonography-documented intravesical prostatic protrusion <10 mm. We analyzed the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of these clinical criteria for diagnosing urodynamic DU in men aged 50 years or above with lower urinary tract symptoms who underwent urodynamic studies.

In this study, we elucidate if synthetic contrast enhanced computed tomography images created from plain computed tomography images using deep neural networks could be used for screening, clinical diagnosis, and postoperative follow-up of small-diameter renal tumors. This retrospective, multicenter study included 155 patients (artificial intelligence training cohort [n = 99], validation cohort [n = 56]) who underwent surgery for small-diameter (≤40 mm) renal tumors, with the pathological diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, during 2010-2020. We created a learned deep neural networks using pix2pix.

While SARS-CoV-2 is generally under control, the question of variants and infections still persists. Fundamental information on how the virus interacts with inanimate surfaces commonly found in our daily life and when in contact with the skin will be helpful in developing strategies to inhibit the spread of the virus. Here in, a critically important review of current understanding of the interaction between virus and surface is summarized from chemistry point-of-view.
