Evaluation of educational needs in patients with diabetes mellitus in respect of medication use in Austria.

Background: Effective control of diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2) can reduce the development and progression of diabetic complications. Therefore, patient education should be considered as an integral part of diabetes management.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess DM patients' perception of knowledge for their medication and attitude towards self-management and pharmacist's role.

Adherence to clinical guidelines in the prevention of coronary heart disease in type II diabetes mellitus.

Objective: The study aimed to assess adherence of prescribed medication in primary care to nationally recognised guideline criteria using case note review applying a previously developed medication assessment tool for coronary heart disease (MAT-CHD). Setting Primary care medical centre serving 17,991 patients. A sample of 208 from 463 patients with type 2 diabetes aged 20-75 years with or without a history of ischaemic heart disease (IHD).

Enniatin exerts p53-dependent cytostatic and p53-independent cytotoxic activities against human cancer cells.

Worldwide, multiple Fusarium mycotoxins occur as contaminants of cereals with important impacts on human and animal health. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the widespread Fusarium secondary metabolite enniatin (ENN), a cyclic hexadepsipeptide, on human cell growth and survival. While short-term exposure (up to 8 h) to ENN at nanomolar concentrations slightly but significantly stimulated cell proliferation, it showed profound apoptosis-inducing effects especially against various human cancer cell types at low micromolar concentrations (already after 24 h of treatment).

Studies on the chemistry of thienoanellated O,N- and S,N-containing heterocycles. Part 30: synthesis and pharmacological properties of thieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazines with potential vasopressin receptor antagonistic activity.

A series of new nonpeptide vasopressin antagonists with a 6-ethyl-thieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazine or 6-benzyl-thieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazine skeleton and structural modifications of the aryl side chain were synthesized in this study. The effects on guinea pig heart and smooth muscle preparations were investigated. In the presence of AVP the compounds showed an antagonistic effect.

Synthesis and pharmacological profile of non-peptide vasopressin antagonists.

Recently we presented a series of 6-ethyl and 6-benzylthieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazine derivatives with relaxing effects on vascular smooth muscle and terminal ileum. In this report the synthesis of further thieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazine derivatives and related compounds with a thieno[2,3-b][1,4]thiazepine or thieno[3,2-b][1,4]thiazine ring system is described. The pharmacological effect of the agents was tested in isolated smooth (terminal ileum, pulmonary artery, aortic rings, myometrial strips) and heart (papillary muscle, spontaneously beating right atrium) muscle preparations of the guinea pig.

Investigation of the electrophysiological properties of enniatins.

Enniatins are cyclohexadepsipeptides produced by various species of the genus Fusarium, and are known to have ionophoric, antibiotic, and in vitro hypolipidaemic properties. With the patch clamp technique in the inside-out mode it could be shown that enniatin easily incorporates into the cell membrane in which it forms cation-selective pores. This feature is characterized by unitary transitions to conductance levels typical for channels, ion selectivity, rectification, conductivity in the pS range, and block.
