A new subspecies of the subterranean beetle Speoplanes biocovensis Mller, 1934 (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Cholevinae: Leptodirini) from Bosnia and Herzegovina: the first occurrence of the genus outside Croatia.

A new subterranean leptodirine leiodid beetle, Speoplanes biocovensis bosnicus Vrbica, Vesovi, Raa & uri, ssp. n., is described and diagnosed from a pit in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Molecular Diversity of Compounds from Pygidial Gland Secretions of Cave-Dwelling Ground Beetles: The First Evidence.

Three adult cave-dwelling ground beetle species were induced to discharge secretions of their pygidial glands into vials. Dichloromethane extraction was used to obtain the secretions. In total, 42 compounds were identified by GC/MS analysis.

Nonlinear microscopy of chitin and chitinous structures: a case study of two cave-dwelling insects.

We performed a study of the nonlinear optical properties of chemically purified chitin and insect cuticle using two-photon excited autofluorescence (TPEF) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. Excitation spectrum, fluorescence time, polarization sensitivity, and bleaching speed were measured. We have found that the maximum autofluorescence signal requires an excitation wavelength below 850 nm.
