The contribution of illness perception to psychological distress in heart failure patients.

Background: The influences on the psychological well-being of heart failure (HF) patients have received limited attention. Illness perceptions are a specific set of cognitive representations that have been shown to predict health-related outcomes in other patient groups. This study sought to explore the role of illness perceptions in the psychological well-being of HF patients by creating a profile of illness perceptions in HF and examining their relations with anxiety and depression.

Vulnerable older people in the community: relationship between the Vulnerable Elders Survey and health service use.

Screening for frailty among seniors in clinical practice.

The normal course of aging is associated with gradual declines in a number of functional abilities. Patients who are at high risk of functional decline are described as frail or vulnerable. A screening tool to identify such patients is needed, as it has been shown that intervention can delay the onset and/or slow the progression of functional decline.

The changing demographic profile of the world's population towards old age and evidence of people living for longer with less time spent in ill health highlight the importance of addressing quality-of-life (QOL) assessment issues for older people. The assessment of health-related QOL (HR-QOL) has received considerable attention in the last 2-3 decades, with a wide variety of assessment instruments available. These instruments can be either generic or disease specific, health profiles or preference based.
