Article Synopsis
  • The cornea is essential for vision, serving as a protective and refractive layer in the eye.
  • Recent advancements in studying the human cornea include the use of organoids created from induced pluripotent stem cells, which hold promise for understanding corneal health and disease.
  • Research revealed that 4-month-old human cornea organoids have cell clusters resembling different corneal layers and contain more epithelial and endothelial-like cells compared to the adult cornea, making them valuable for investigating corneal diseases.

Keratoconus (KC) is a degenerative disease associated with cell and extracellular matrix (ECM) loss that causes gradual thinning and steepening of the cornea and loss of vision. Collagen cross linking with ultraviolet light treatment can strengthen the ECM and delay weakening of the cornea, but severe cases require corneal transplantation. KC is multifactorial and multigenic, but its pathophysiology is still an enigma.

Persistent mating-induced endometritis is a major cause of poor fertility rates in the mare. Endometritis can be investigated using an ex vivo equine endometrial explant system which measures uterine inflammation using prostaglandin F as a biomarker. However, this model has yet to undergo a wide-ranging assessment through transcriptomics.
