Article Synopsis
  • Recent advancements in the use of multilayer graphene sheets have gained attention over single-layer versions because they are more cost-effective and easier to mass-produce.
  • However, multilayer graphene suffers from structural weaknesses due to the weak connections between its layers, prompting researchers to explore various modification techniques to improve strength.
  • This study investigates the focused ion beam irradiation method to enhance the mechanical properties of multilayer graphene, with potential applications in water desalination and gas storage technologies.

The ternary compound boron carbonitride (BCN) was synthesized in the form of few-layer nanosheets through a mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction (MSR). Magnesium was used to reduce boron trioxide in the presence of melamine in a combustive manner. The process to form the nanostructured material was very rapid (less than 40 min).
