Community-directed distributors-The "foot soldiers" in the fight to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases.

The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect hundreds of millions of people, predominantly in rural, often difficult-to-access areas, poorly served by national health services. Here, we review the contributions of 4.8 million community-directed distributors (CDDs) of medicines over 2 decades in 146,000 communities in 27 sub-Saharan African countries to control or eliminate onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (LF).

Paediatric HIV infection in Western Africa: the long way to the standard of care.

In sub-Saharan Africa, newborns and children continue to suffer from insufficient access to early diagnosis and antiretroviral (ARV) treatments. A survey had been conducted in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Ivory Coast, from January 2010 to February 2011 to identify the major challenges regarding HIV prophylaxis and treatment of children in western Africa. The results of this survey highlight that only a small proportion of HIV-exposed newborns receive ARV prophylaxis.
