Coastal erosion is becoming increasingly problematic as sea level rise and coastal areas become more urbanised. In response, more defence structures such as groynes are being built, which are crucial for counteracting sediment loss and coastline retreat. Despite worldwide use, comparatively little is known about the factors that determine the species composition on such structures.
