Objective: To identify risk factors for dysphagia in individuals who sustained traumatic cervical SCI. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of dysphagia in individuals with traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) are not well understood yet. Several risk factors for developing dysphagia after SCI were postulated including mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy, age, female sex, anterior surgical approach, SCI severity, and multilevel spinal fusion.

Background: Spinal cord injury results in permanent neurological impairment and disability due to the absence of spontaneous regeneration. NG101, a recombinant human antibody, neutralises the neurite growth-inhibiting protein Nogo-A, promoting neural repair and motor recovery in animal models of spinal cord injury. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intrathecal NG101 on recovery in patients with acute cervical traumatic spinal cord injury.

Aflatoxins (AF), fungal metabolites, can contaminate feed in favorable environments, posing health risks to humans and animals. Dairy cows exposed to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) excrete its metabolite, aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), in milk, compromising its safety. The current study examined the use of an AF binder in dairy feed concentrates on farms in Rwanda to mitigate AFM1 in milk.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the gold standard for evaluating spinal cord tissue damage after spinal cord injury (SCI). Several MRI findings may have some prognostic potential, but their evolution over time, especially from the subacute to the chronic phase has not been studied extensively. We performed a prospective observational longitudinal study exploring the evolution of MRI parameters from the subacute to chronic phase after human traumatic cervical SCI.

Background And Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exhibits diverse patterns of disease progression, due to underlying disease activity. We hypothesized that changes in static hyperinflation or KCO % predicted would reveal subgroups with disease progression unidentified by preestablished markers (FEV, SGRQ, exacerbation history) and associated with unique baseline biomarker profiles. We explored 18-month measures of disease progression associated with 18-54-month mortality, including changes in hyperinflation parameters and transfer factor, in a large German COPD cohort.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a rare condition with a heterogeneous presentation, making the prediction of recovery challenging. However, serological markers have been shown to be associated with severity and long-term recovery following SCI. Therefore, our investigation aimed to assess the feasibility of translating this association into a prediction of the lower extremity motor scores (LEMS) at chronic stage (52 weeks after initial injury) in patients with SCI using routine serological markers.

Background And Objectives: Neurological and functional recovery after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is highly challenged by the level of the lesion and the high heterogeneity in severity (different degrees of in/complete SCI) and spinal cord syndromes (hemi-, ant-, central-, and posterior cord). So far outcome predictions in clinical trials are limited in targeting sum motor scores of the upper (UEMS) and lower limb (LEMS) while neglecting that the distribution of motor function is essential for functional outcomes. The development of data-driven prediction models of detailed segmental motor recovery for all spinal segments from the level of lesion towards the lowest motor segments will improve the design of rehabilitation programs and the sensitivity of clinical trials.

Background: The discovery of new prognostic biomarkers following spinal cord injury (SCI) is a rapidly growing field that could help uncover the underlying pathological mechanisms of SCI and aid in the development of new therapies. To date, this search has largely focused on the initial days after the lesion. However, during the subacute stage of SCI (weeks to months after the injury), there remains potential for sensorimotor recovery, and numerous secondary events develop in various organs.

Assessing the extent of the intramedullary lesion after spinal cord injury (SCI) might help to improve prognostication. However, because the neurological level of injury impacts the recovery potential of SCI patients, the question arises whether lesion size parameters and predictive models based on those parameters are affected as well. In this retrospective observational study, the extent of the intramedullary lesion between individuals who sustained cervical and thoracolumbar SCI was compared, and its relation to clinical recovery was assessed.

Background: The accuracy of prognostication in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) needs to be improved. We aimed to explore the prognostic value of preserved spinal tissue bridges-injury-spared neural tissue adjacent to the lesion-for prediction of sensorimotor recovery in a large, multicentre cohort of people with SCI.

Methods: For this longitudinal study, we included patients with acute cervical SCI (vertebrae C1-C7) admitted to one of three trauma or rehabilitation centres: Murnau, Germany (March 18, 2010-March 1, 2021); Zurich, Switzerland (May 12, 2002-March 2, 2019); and Denver, CO, USA (Jan 12, 2010-Feb 16, 2017).

Fair allocation of funding in multi-centre clinical studies is challenging. Models commonly used in Germany - the case fees ("fixed-rate model", FRM) and up-front staffing and consumables ("up-front allocation model", UFAM) lack transparency and fail to suitably accommodate variations in centre performance. We developed a performance-based reimbursement model (PBRM) with automated calculation of conducted activities and applied it to the cohorts of the National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON) within the Network of University Medicine (NUM).

  • In cancer treatment, "lines of therapy" (LOT) is a term that means different things to different doctors, and they don't all agree on its definition.
  • A study in Germany found that doctors often have trouble understanding LOT and have had misunderstandings with their colleagues about it.
  • Experts discussed various factors that affect LOT, like types of treatments and therapy breaks, but they mostly agreed on what should matter when deciding about LOT.

Single-photon cameras (SPCs) have emerged as a promising new technology for high-resolution 3D imaging. A single-photon 3D camera determines the round-trip time of a laser pulse by precisely capturing the arrival of individual photons at each camera pixel. Constructing photon-timestamp histograms is a fundamental operation for a single-photon 3D camera.

For motor incomplete spinal cord injured patients, improvement of walking function is an important aim in the rehabilitation program. In specialized treatment centers, the 6‑minute walking test, the 10-meter walking test or the timed-up-and-go test are used as an assessment tool to determine walking ability, but these tests are not able to assess the quality of gait. Marker-based movement analysis can be used as a reliable method to evaluate the gait pattern.

Background: Accurate prediction of walking function after a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is crucial for an appropriate tailoring and application of therapeutical interventions. Long-term outcome of ambulation is strongly related to residual muscle function acutely after injury and its recovery potential. The identification of the underlying determinants of ambulation, however, remains a challenging task in SCI, a neurological disorder presented with heterogeneous clinical manifestations and recovery trajectories.
