Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is reported to play important roles in cardiovascular regulation in human and animal models. In spite of this, its role remains controversial. We aim to clarify this by studying the autonomic cardiovascular function and vascular structure in CGRP knockout (CGRP(-/-)) mice.

Computational prediction of kink properties of helices in membrane proteins.

We have combined molecular dynamics simulations and fold identification procedures to investigate the structure of 696 kinked and 120 unkinked transmembrane (TM) helices in the PDBTM database. Our main aim of this study is to understand the formation of helical kinks by simulating their quasi-equilibrium heating processes, which might be relevant to the prediction of their structural features. The simulated structural features of these TM helices, including the position and the angle of helical kinks, were analyzed and compared with statistical data from PDBTM.

Role of hepatitis C virus induced osteopontin in epithelial to mesenchymal transition, migration and invasion of hepatocytes.

Droplet spreading on a two-dimensional wicking surface.

The dynamics of droplet spreading on two-dimensional wicking surfaces were studied using square arrays of Si nanopillars. It was observed that the wicking film always precedes the droplet edge during the spreading process causing the droplet to effectively spread on a Cassie-Baxter surface composed of solid and liquid phases. Unlike the continual spreading of the wicking film, however, the droplet will eventually reach a shape where further spreading becomes energetically unfavorable.

Collection of Oral Fluids Using Cotton Ropes as a Sampling Method to Detect Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Infection in Pigs.

In high-density farming practices, it is important to constantly monitor for infectious diseases, especially diseases that have the potential to spread rapidly between holdings. Pigs are known to amplify foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) by excreting large amounts of virus, and it is therefore important to detect the virus quickly and accurately to minimize the spread of disease. Ropes were used to collect oral fluid samples from pigs, and each sample was compared to saliva samples collected from individual animals by detecting FMD virus RNA using real-time PCR.

Rapid determination of scopolamine in evidence of recreational and predatory use.

In recent years, scopolamine has become a drug of common use for recreational and predatory purposes and several ways of administration have been devised. A method for the rapid analysis of suspicious samples was developed, using a portable capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection. The method allows the separation of scopolamine from atropine which has a similar structure and is present along with scopolamine in some samples.

Feasibility of remote real-time guidance of a cardiac examination performed by novices using a pocket-sized ultrasound device.

Background. The potential of pocket-sized ultrasound devices (PUDs) to improve global healthcare delivery is limited by the lack of a suitable imaging protocol and trained users. Therefore, we investigated the feasibility of performing a brief, evidence-based cardiac limited ultrasound exam (CLUE) through wireless guidance of novice users.

Respiratory virus laboratory pandemic planning and surveillance in central Viet Nam, 2008-2010.

Introduction: Laboratory capacity is needed in central Viet Nam to provide early warning to public health authorities of respiratory outbreaks of importance to human health, for example the outbreak of influenza A(H1N1) pandemic in 2009. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedures established as part of a capacity-building process were used to conduct prospective respiratory surveillance in a region where few previous studies have been undertaken.

Methods: Between October 2008 and September 2010, nose and throat swabs from adults and children (approximately 20 per week) presenting with an acute respiratory illness to the Ninh Hoa General Hospital were collected.

Optimisation of radiological protection for operators working with fluoroscopically guided procedures has to be performed during the procedure, under varying and difficult conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of a system for real-time visualisation of radiation dose rate on optimisation of occupational radiological protection in fluoroscopically guided procedures. Individual radiation dose measurements, using a system for real-time visualisation, were performed in a cardiology laboratory for three cardiologists and ten assisting nurses.

Determination of artificial sweeteners by capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection optimized by hydrodynamic pumping.

The common sweeteners aspartame, cyclamate, saccharin and acesulfame K were determined by capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection. In order to obtain the best compromise between separation efficiency and analysis time hydrodynamic pumping was imposed during the electrophoresis run employing a sequential injection manifold based on a syringe pump. Band broadening was avoided by using capillaries of a narrow 10 μm internal diameter.

Spatial frequency domain imaging of burn wounds in a preclinical model of graded burn severity.

Frequent monitoring of early-stage burns is necessary for deciding optimal treatment and management. Both superficial and full thickness burns are relatively easy to diagnose based on clinical observation. In between these two extremes are superficial-partial thickness and deep-partial thickness burns.

Determination of nitrogen mustard degradation products in water samples using a portable capillary electrophoresis instrument.

In this work, a new purpose-made portable CE instrument with a contactless conductivity detector was used for the determination of degradation products of nitrogen mustards in different water samples. The capillary was coated with poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) to avoid analyte-wall interactions. The coating procedure was studied to obtain the best repeatability of the migration time of the analytes.

Red blood cells decorated with functionalized core-shell magnetic nanoparticles: elucidation of the adsorption mechanism.

The decoration of red blood cells (RBCs) with aminated and carboxylated core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (CSMNs) was studied and elucidated. It was demonstrated that only aminated CSMNs could decorate the RBCs and their adsorption interaction is mainly ruled by electrostatic attraction between the positively charged amino groups on CSMNs and the abundant sialic acid groups on the outer surface of RBCs.

Study on the interrelated effects of capillary diameter, background electrolyte concentration, and flow rate in pressure assisted capillary electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection.

A detailed study on the effect of the buffer concentration and the magnitude of the superimposed hydrodynamic flow on separation performance in CZE with contactless conductivity detection was carried out with capillaries of 10, 25, and 50 μm internal diameter. It was confirmed that capillaries of narrow internal diameters require higher buffer concentrations for best sensitivities. For all diameters it was found that electrodispersion was the most pronounced band-broadening factor for relatively long residence times.

Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses of porcine circovirus type 2 among pig farms in Vietnam.

This study demonstrated the prevalence of Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) among pig farms in Vietnam. Analyses of the genome, capsid protein and phylogeny classified all 30 Vietnamese PCV2 strains as the PCV2b genotype, belonging to the clusters of 1A, 1B, 1C and recombinant forms. Each viral genome was 1767 nucleotides long and shared 96.

Portable capillary electrophoresis instrument with automated injector and contactless conductivity detection.

A portable capillary electrophoresis instrument featuring an automated, robust, valve-based injection system was developed. This significantly facilitates operation in the field compared to previous injection approaches. These generally required delicate manual operations which are difficult to perform outside the laboratory environment.

By diversifying the biological effector functions of antibodies, class switch DNA recombination (CSR) plays a critical role in the maturation of the immune response. It is initiated by activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID)-mediated deoxycytosine deamination, yielding deoxyuridine (dU), and dU glycosylation by uracil DNA glycosylase (Ung) in antibody switch (S) region DNA. Here we showed that the translesion DNA synthesis polymerase Rev1 directly interacted with Ung and targeted in an AID-dependent and Ung-independent fashion the S regions undergoing CSR.

Memory of chirality of tertiary aromatic amide: application to the asymmetric synthesis of (S)-α-methylDOPA.

We describe an original asymmetric synthesis of (S)-α-methylDOPA proceeding by the concept of memory of chirality, the only source of chirality being the starting D-alanine. The initial chirality of the amino acid is temporarily transferred to a dynamic axial chirality of a tertiary aromatic amide. The (S)-α-methylDOPA hydrochloride is obtained after four steps with 98% ee.
