A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of fever, hemorrhagic skin lesion with pruritus, and severe thrombocytopenia. Anemia; marked eosinophilia; and elevated ALP, CRP, and soluble IL-2 receptor levels were observed on admission. Both anti-nuclear antibody and Coombs tests were positive.

Adult-onset autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) is rarely self-limiting, unlike infant-onset AIN. Although several therapeutic agents have been reported, including corticosteroids, more effective treatment options may exist. Here, we describe neutrophil recovery by eltrombopag in a 52-year-old male AIN patient with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who was referred to our hospital with severe neutropenia.

Recently, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of cancer patients have been analyzed as a biomarker of disease progression and as a new prognostic tool.We conducted a pilot study to determine whether CTCs present before and after chemotherapy or peptide vaccination predicted outcome in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). CTCs were isolated from the peripheral blood of MBC patients and evaluated using the CellSearch®System (Janssen Diagnostics).

Paraneoplastic inflammation of the large vessels is a rare complication of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and patients with MDS and systemic vasculitis have a poor prognosis. We present a 66-year-old male with MDS and large vessel vasculitis treated with azacitidine. Azacitidine administration improved his clinical symptoms, high fever and thickening of the arterial wall, and he achieved a complete bone marrow remission.

Background: The present study was aimed to evaluate the usefulness of contrast Sonazoid-enhanced ultrasonography (US) for the detection of hepatic metastases in breast cancer patients and compare the clinical efficacy and sensitivity of this technique with conventional contrast unenhanced B-mode US in follow-up examinations of breast cancer patients with liver metastasis.

Methods: We assessed a total of 84 hepatic tumors from 24 patients diagnosed with or suspected of having metastatic cancer. These hepatic nodules were diagnosed through imaging, including dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) scan, B-mode US or contrast Sonazoid-enhanced US (SEUS).

Malignant lymphomas of the breast are rare and primary breast lymphoma comprises <0.5 % of breast malignancies, within which T-cell lymphomas are an even rarer subset. We report a case of primary breast peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS).

Despite the good responses of patients (pts) with stage III breast cancer to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), most eventually relapse and have a poor prognosis. We investigated the prognostic indicators in pts with stage III breast cancer treated with NAC, using epirubicin and/or docetaxel. A total of 22 women with stage III breast cancer underwent NAC between January 2005 and May 2011.

Background: We investigated the efficacy and safety of metronomic chemotherapy with combined irinotecan and tegafur-gimeracil-oteracil potassium (TS-1) in patients with metastatic and recurrent breast cancer (MRBC), and the association between irinotecan metabolizing enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene polymorphisms and adverse events.

Methods: The study group comprised 40 patients aged 35-79 years. Irinotecan (60 mg/m(2) in 5 % dextrose) was administered by 120-min infusion on days 1, 8, and 15 every 4 weeks.

In order to take advantage by both the anticancer effects and reconstruction of antitumor immunity, we compared the feasibility of a combination of CTL transfer and chemotherapy (ChT) for patients (pts) with malignant ascites due to carcinomatous peritonealitis of refractory gastric cancer to that of ChT only and/or cellular immunotherapy after failing ChT. A total of 22 pts, 8 underwent only conventional ChT (Group A), 6 performed cellular IT after failing ChT (Group B) and 8 underwent combination therapy (Group C), were enrolled in this retrospective study. ChT was based on conventional conditioning regimen with a standard dose for gastric cancer cases: S-1 (80-120 mg/body) plus paclitaxel (60-80 mg/m2), or CPT-11 (70-80 mg/m2) plus CDDP (80 mg/m2).

We employed multidisciplinary therapy, consisting of hyperthermia, radiotherapy, and intraarterial infusion, for a patient with progressive advanced breast cancer that was resistant to epirubicin hydrochloride and cyclophosphamide (EC) therapy as well as being resistant to docetaxel hydrate, and obtained a good therapeutic response. Because estrogen and progesterone receptors were both negative and HER2 was 3(+), administration of trastuzumab was started, and this patient has shown no signs of recurrence at 33 months after our treatment. The results suggested that our multidisciplinary therapy can be an effective method for the treatment of progressive breast cancer showing resistance to major chemotherapy agents such as anthracyclines and taxanes.

Pulmonary glomus tumor is rare and its manifestations on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have not, to our knowledge, been reported previously. A round mass was detected in the right upper lung field on a routine chest radiograph. With dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, the mass showed strong, early-phase peripheral enhancement that expanded in a centripetal direction with time.
