Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever re-emerged in Bangladesh in 2000 and 2001 and nearly all viruses isolated were dengue type 3. Phylogenetic analyses of the envelope genes of examples of these viruses indicated that they were most closely related to recently emerged dengue type 3 viruses from neighboring Thailand and Myanmar but distinct from those from India and Sri Lanka. Since this strain of dengue virus type 3 had not been associated with unusual patterns of disease in Thailand or Myanmar, it suggested that the outbreak in Bangladesh was due to local factors after the introduction of viruses from countries to the east rather than to the evolution of an unusually virulent strain of virus in Bangladesh.

In animal-based transplantation research, the measurement of anti-donor antibodies in transplant recipients is limited by lack of an appropriate technique. We have developed a novel immunoassay capable of quantifying antibody bound to cell-surface major histo- compatability complex (MHC) and non-MHC antigens, using splenocytes from wild-type and MHC-deficient mice as antigen-bearing target cells. We utilized our "cellular ELISA" (CELISA) technique to study the development of tolerance versus immunity in the B-cell compartment in response to neonatal exposure to allogeneic fetal liver cells (FLC).

Outbreaks of dengue due to dengue virus type 1 (DENV-1) occurred almost simultaneously in 2001 in Myanmar and at multiple sites almost 10,000 km away in the Pacific. Phylogenetic analyses of the E protein genes of DENV-1 strains recovered from Asia and the Pacific revealed three major viral genotypes (I, II, and III) with distinct clades within each. The majority of strains from the Pacific and Myanmar, and a number of other Asian strains fell into genotype I.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) emerged, in November 2002, as a novel agent causing severe respiratory illness. To study sequence variation in the SARS-CoV genome, we determined the nucleic acid sequence of the S and N genes directly from clinical specimens from 10 patients--1 specimen with no matched SARS-CoV isolate, from 2 patients; multiple specimens from 3 patients; and matched clinical-specimen/cell-culture-isolate pairs from 6 patients. We identified 3 nucleotide substitutions that were most likely due to natural variation and 2 substitutions that arose after cell-culture passage of the virus.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible mechanisms of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Sm) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. Male Wistar rats received a single dose of CCl(4) (2 ml/kg in corn oil, intraperitoneally). Three hours after CCl(4) intoxication, rats received either Sm (100 mg/kg) or silymarin (100 mg/kg) by gastrogavage twice a day for 2 consecutive days.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a major neurotrophin in the brain and abnormal regulation of BDNF may contribute to the pathophysiology of mood disorders. In the present study, we examined if alterations in the activity of glycogen synthase kinase-3-beta (GSK3beta) or treatment with mood stabilizers modulated BDNF-mediated signal transduction pathways in differentiated human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. BDNF increased the phosphorylation of the forkhead transcription factor FKHRL1 through activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway, and the phosphorylation of the cyclic AMP response element binding protein (CREB) through activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2).

An extract of the fruits of Rhamnus nepalensis collected in Hoa Binh Province, Vietnam, was cytotoxic to KB cells. A bioassay-guided fractionation led to the isolation of a series of known anthraquinones and anthrones, one new rhamnosylanthraquinone, 3'-O-acetylfrangulin A (8), several new rhamnosylanthrones, the prinoidin-emodin bianthrones (9A-D), the prinoidin bianthrones (10A,B), and the rhamnepalins (11A-C). Growth factors involved in angiogenesis are critical to both the normal and pathological vascular development in the retina and choroid. In the present experiment, the relationship between the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and the retinochoroidal vasculogenesis in Sprague-Dawley rats was investigated using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. It was found that VEGF was produced mainly by astrocytes and Muller cells in the neural retina, and this was correlated temporally and spatially with the retinal vasculogenesis.

In 3.2% of 712 procedures performed in 668 hips after May 1, 1976, separation and migration of the trochanteric fragment occurred after total hip arthroplasty (THA) through a transtrochanteric approach and an interlocking cruciate two-wire technique of reattachment.
