Competing Activation and Deactivation Mechanisms in Photodoped Bismuth Oxybromide Nanoplates Probed by Single-Molecule Fluorescence Imaging.

Oxygen vacancies in semiconductor photocatalysts play several competing roles, serving to both enhance light absorption and charge separation of photoexcited carriers as well as act as recombination centers for their deactivation. In this Letter, we show that single-molecule fluorescence imaging of a chemically activated fluorogenic probe can be used to monitor changes in the photocatalytic activity of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) nanoplates in situ during the light-induced formation of oxygen vacancies. We observe that the specific activities of individual nanoplates for the photocatalytic reduction of resazurin first increase and then progressively decrease under continuous laser irradiation.

Haemorrhagic versus non haemorrhagic ascites in cirrhosis: Their relationship and impact on prognosis of liver cirrhosis.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of haemorrhagic ascites on prognosis of patients with advance cirrhosis, this study was further aimed to assess the relationship between haemorrhagic ascites and advance cirrhosis and its effect on prognosis.

Methods: Eight hundred and thirty-eight patients having liver cirrhosis with ascites were analyzed retrospectively (over three years) while segregated into two groups haemorrhagic and non haemorrhagic ascites. Patient outcome variables were identified among both groups and independent predictors for survival were analyzed.

An efficient and environmentally benign synthetic protocol has been developed for the synthesis of benzo[]pyrazolo[2,7]naphthyridine derivatives through regioselective multi-component "on-water" reaction of isatin, malononitrile and 3-aminopyrazole. The Knoevenagel condensation of isatin with malononitrile resulted in the formation of arylidene, which subsequently underwent Michael addition with 3-aminopyrazole followed by basic hydrolysis, cyclization, decarboxylation and aromatization to give the target naphthyridines in good to excellent yields. The one-pot multi-component protocol was also employed to obtain the said naphthyridines in a lower yield (10-15%) than obtained by basic hydrolysis of spiro-intermediates.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease, part of the spectrum of motor neuron diseases. This disease is divided on the bases of heritability, with majority of the cases being sporadic and phenotype, with eight recognized patterns-each with its respective symptoms, rate of progression, and prognosis. Here, we report a case of sporadic, bulbar-onset ALS, unique in its presentation as our patient had fully progressed bulbar symptoms, at the age of 28 years-where other cases of bulbar ALS are associated with much older ages and have a predisposition for the female gender.
