Changes in serum ghrelin and resistin levels after sleeve gastrectomy versus one anastomosis gastric bypass: prospective cohort study.

Introduction: Humoral factors and neural mechanisms play a central role in the pathogenesis of obesity and in weight loss following bariatric surgery. Although various hormones and adipokines, including ghrelin and resistin, are linked to obesity, studies analyzing the changes in fasting ghrelin and resistin levels in patients following one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) are lacking.

Aim: The authors aimed to investigate resistin and ghrelin levels before and after two commonly used bariatric procedures with different mechanisms of action: sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and OAGB.

Interleukin-21 and Interleukin-32 gene expression levels and their relationship with clinicopathological parameters in colorectal cancer.

Background And Aims: The immune cells in tumor microenvironment release chemokines and cytokines which determine the immune phenotype of the tumor and play an important role in the prognosis. Present study evaluates the gene expression levels of IL-21 and IL-32 and their relations to clinicopathologic parameters in colorectal cancer.

Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the elective surgeries had to be postponed. However, it is not possible to delay the surgical treat- ment of cancer patients for a long time. The aim of this study was to present how gastrointestinal system surgery operations are managed without delay and how employee safety is ensured , together with the results of the last five months.

Lymph Node Mapping in Gastric Cancer Surgery: Current Status and New Horizons.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains one of the most important malignant diseases with significant geographical, ethnic, and socioeconomic differences in distribution. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping is an accepted way to assess lymphatic spread in several solid tumors; however, the complexity of gastric lymphatic drainage may discourage use of this procedure, and the estimated accuracy rate is, in general, reasonably good. This study aimed at reviewing the current status of SLN mapping and navigation surgery in GC.

Emergency Department visits after bariatric surgery.

Background: Although bariatric surgery (BS) has an excellent safety profile, postoperative complications have undoubtedly increased due to the rise in the amount of operations performed annually. In parallel, the number of visits to the Emergency Department (ED) after surgery is increasing. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency, and the risk factors associated with postoperative ED visits after BS.

The current role of robotics in bariatric surgery.

Significant improvements have been made in bariatric surgery for the past two decades. Thus, early and late complication rates decreased significantly. Thanks to its promising results, robotic surgery is finding increasing use in the field of surgery and the bariatric surgery is one of these areas.

Introduction: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the commonest bariatric procedure worldwide. Yet there is significant variation in practice concerning its various aspects. This paper report results from the first modified Delphi consensus-building exercise on SG.

The Effect of Bariatric Surgery on Exocrine Pancreatic Function.

Introduction: After bariatric surgery (BS), patients might suffer from nutrient maldigestion, malabsorption, and vitamin deficiencies. In this study, our aim was to assess pancreatic functions after BS using fecal elastase-1 assay (FE-1).

Material And Methods: Sixty patients (21M) undergoing BS and 20 (6M) healthy controls were included into the study.

General Surgery Operating Room Practice in Patients with COVID-19.

The virus COVID-19, which emerged in China in December 2019, was announced by the World Health Organization as a pandemic in January 2020. It is known that infection is not severe and may even progress without symptoms in patients who have come into contact with COVID-19. Although various organizations have been informed about how to take measures to protect the patient and the surgeon in case of diseases requiring urgent or elective surgery in people infected with COVID-19 or in cases with high suspicion, there is still no definite judgment between patients, physicians and health authorities.

Changes in HOMA-IR index levels after bariatric surgery: Comparison of Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch-proximal approach (SADS-p) and One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass-Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB-MGB).

Background: Bariatric surgery plays a major role in ameliorating metabolic abnormalities of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the early effects of "Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch-proximal approach" (SADS-p) and "One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass-Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB-MGB) on the "homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance" (HOMA-IR) index levels in morbidly obese patients with T2DM.

Methods: In this retrospective 3-year trial, outcomes of SADS-p and OAGB-MGB patients were compared considering the changes in HOMA-IR index levels.

Diagnosis and management of acute appendicitis. EAES consensus development conference 2015.

Unequivocal international guidelines regarding the diagnosis and management of patients with acute appendicitis are lacking. The aim of the consensus meeting 2015 of the EAES was to generate a European guideline based on best available evidence and expert opinions of a panel of EAES members. After a systematic review of the literature by an international group of surgical research fellows, an expert panel with extensive clinical experience in the management of appendicitis discussed statements and recommendations.

Unusual cause of small bowel obstruction: mesodiverticular band of Meckel's diverticulum demonstrated by CT.

Small bowel obstruction resulting from the mesodiverticular band is a rare complication of Meckel's diverticulum and usually presents a diagnostic challenge. We present a case of small bowel obstruction due to the mesodiverticular band of Meckel's diverticulum with CT scan findings.

Predictors of poor outcome in gastrointestinal bleeding in emergency department.

Aim: To determine the prognostic risk factors of gastrointestinal bleeding in emergency department cases.

Methods: The trial was a retrospective single-center study involving 600 patients over 18-years-old and carried out with approval by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Patient data included demographic characteristics, symptoms at admission, past medical history, vital signs, laboratory results, endoscopy and colonoscopy results, length of hospital stay, need of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and mortality.

Aim And Background: Obesity is a multifactorial disease in which environmental and genetic factors play an integrated role. Determining such target genes will help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying complex diseases such as obesity and diabetes which are usually seen together. Present study investigates the expression levels of STEAP4 and HIF-1α in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue.

Current adjuvant therapeutic approaches for pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer continues to be the fourth leading cause of death despite advancements in surgical and adjuvant therapeutic approaches. In the present review, the current cytotoxic therapeutic approaches and advanced targeted therapies are objectively discussed with consideration to the current literature.

Improved oxidative status in major abdominal surgery patients after N-acetyl cystein supplementation.

Background: Increased levels of reactive oxygen species during and after surgery may affect inflammatory response, post-operative adhesion molecule formation, and hemodynamic stability. The glutathione redox cycle is an important regulator in oxidative stress and its reduced forms scavenge free radicals. N-acetyl cysteine, a precursor of reduced glutathione, is considered as a potentially therapeutic wide spectrum agent in clinical practice.

Predictive value of liver transaminases levels in abdominal trauma.

Introduction: We aimed to evaluate whether hepatic transaminase levels could predict the presence and severity of liver injury following abdominal trauma.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 75 surgically treated patients and 21 non-surgically treated patients with liver injury who were managed between 2004 and 2012. We retrieved demographic, laboratory, radiologic, and intraoperative data, as well as surgical procedures and the outcome from the patients' medical records.
