Aim: To describe the radiological findings in primary liver lymphoma, which is a rare entity, presenting usually as a localized liver mass.

Materials And Methods: We reviewed retrospectively the imaging findings at presentation, of patients in whom a diagnosis of primary liver lymphoma was finally made histologically. The study period covered a 10-year period between January 1990 and December 1999.

BSE, first identified in the UK in 1986 is thought to have arisen from feeding scrapie infected Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), produced under sub-optimal conditions, to cattle. For quality and safety reasons there is a requirement for a good analytical test for the surveillance of processed MBM. This study describes species-specific PCR assays for the identification of ovine, porcine and poultry species in MBM.

Campylobacter species, primarily Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, are regarded as a major cause of human gastrointestinal disease, commonly acquired by eating undercooked chicken. We describe a PCR-ELISA for the detection of Campylobacter species and the discrimination of C. jejuni and C.

The prolidase (proline-specific amino dipeptidase) from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus has been crystallized. The enzyme has been shown to be a homodimer and to require two Co atoms per subunit for optimum activity. Two crystal forms have been obtained under similar growth conditions.

Auracyanin B, one of two similar blue copper proteins produced by the thermophilic green non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus, crystallizes in space group P6(4)22 (a=b=115.7 A, c=54.6 A).

Aims: The behaviour of Escherichia coli O157:H7 was studied during the manufacture and ripening of a smear-ripened cheese produced from raw milk.

Methods And Results: Cheese was manufactured on a laboratory scale using milk (20 l) inoculated with E. coli O157:H7, and enumeration was carried out using CT-SMAC.

The region of the Y chromosome most critical for male fertility is called the azoospermia factor (AZF) region and it is located within subintervals five and six on the long arm of the Y chromosome. Several genes, all residing here, contribute to spermatogenesis and deletions in these genes are thought to be pathogenetically involved in some cases of male infertility associated with azoospermia or oligozoospermia. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of microdeletions in the AZF region of the Y chromosome in an Irish male population undergoing fertility treatment.

Desmoplastic gangliogliomas are rare mixed glial and neuronal cerebral tumors, especially described in infants below 4 years of age but exceptional cases have been reported in young adults. These tumors are generally localised in parietal or temporal lobes, present as a large cystic lesion with peripheral contrast enhancement. They also have characteristic histological features: extensive desmoplasia and tumoral cells of variable size exhibiting immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of glial and neuronal differentiation.

Abstract Screening for head and neck cancer is underutilized. Given that lack of knowledge of the risk factors may partially account for screening underutilization. we surveyed subjective risk and knowledge of risk factors for head and neck cancer among 124 individuals who attended a free.

We report on a reverse-hybridization line probe assay (LiPA) which when combined with PCR amplification detects and identifies clinically significant fungal pathogens including Candida, Aspergillus, and Cryptococcus species. DNA probes have been designed from the internal transcribed-spacer (ITS) regions of Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida krusei, Candida dubliniensis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus versicolor, Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus flavus. The probes were incorporated into a LiPA for detection of biotinylated ITS PCR products, and the specificity of the probes was evaluated.

ABSTRACT Red wine vasodilates rat aortae, an effect attributed to polyphenolic compounds. Cranberry juice (CBJ) is also rich in polyphenols. We determined that CBJ has vasorelaxing properties similar to those of red wine.

In an effort to counter the problem of noncooperation, survey organizations are offering incentives to respondents with increasing frequency, some at the outset of the survey, as has traditionally been done in mail surveys, and some only after the person has refused, in an attempt to convert the refusal. This article reports on a series of experiments carried out over a period of about 2 years with a monthly telephone survey, the Survey of Consumer Attitudes, in an effort to increase response rates or reduce interviewer effort. We report on experiments with prepaid versus promised incentives; advance letters; and advance letters with prepaid incentives; and we also report on the effects of incentives on response quality, sample composition, response bias, interviewer and respondent expectations, and costs.

The advent of transvaginal sonography has improved the ability of radiologists to visualise both ovaries and has facilitated the preoperative characterisation of many of these lesions. We describe the beneficial role of transvaginal sonography in the accurate preoperative characterisation of dermoid cysts of the ovary in two patients and describe the characteristic features of ovarian dermoid cysts.

Purpose: To prospectively evaluate the role of magnetic resonance (MR) urography in the radiologic assessment of patients with spinal dysraphism.

Materials And Methods: Fourteen patients with spinal dysraphism were referred for MR urography with half-Fourier rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement (RARE) (repetition time msec/echo time msec = 11.9/95) and RARE (2,800/1,100) sequences on a 1.

Much work has focused on trying to identify markers in Helicobacter pylori that might allow the eventual disease outcome of an infection to be predicted. In this study we examined the cagA and vacA genotype, and Lewis status in a panel of 43 Irish H. pylori clinical isolates, and investigated a possible correlation with disease pathology.

We describe the imaging features of a giant geode of the distal humerus in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis, which presented initially as a pathological fracture. The value of magnetic resonance imaging in establishing this diagnosis is emphasized.

The Pr(i) sidechains of two adjacent valine residues, V8 and V44, define the surface of the rubredoxin from Clostridium pasteurianum and control access to its Fe(S-Cys)4 active site. To assess the effect of systematic change of the steric bulk of the alkyl sidechains, eight single and three double mutant proteins have been isolated which vary G (H), A (Me), V (Pr(i)), L (Bu(i)) and I (Bu(s)) at those positions. X-ray crystal structures of the Fe(III) forms of the V44A and V44I proteins are reported.

Campylobacter enteritis in humans has been linked to consumption of poultry meat. Surveys show that 30-100% of poultry harbour Campylobacter as normal flora of the digestive tract which indicates a need to identify prevalent organism types in flocks and trace their epidemiology. In this study we describe a Campylobacter genus specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, amplifying the 16 S-23 S rRNA intergenic spacer region with an internal Campylobacter genus specific DNA probe and species specific probes for Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli designed for confirmation of the amplified PCR products by Southern blot and colorimetric reverse hybridization assays.

We describe the development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/DNA probe membrane-based colorimetric assays for the detection and identification of Listeria and L. monocytogenes. PCR primers designed from the 16S to 23S rRNA intergenic spacer region amplified products that were reverse hybridized to membrane-bound oligonucleotide probes specific for Listeria and L.

Approximately 58% of the RN nursing programs in the United States are associate degree programs (ADN). The curricula of these programs are designed to prepare graduates to competently provide direct patient care. The purpose of this descriptive comparative study was to evaluate the nursing performance of ADN graduates as perceived by graduates, faculty, and employers.
