The potential role of 3 species of Bulinus in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in Saudi Arabia was assessed on the basis of their susceptibility to experimental infection, their geographical distribution and numbers, and the type of habitats in which they were found. B. truncatus, distributed mainly in the mid- and south-western regions, showed extremely low susceptibility to strains of S.

Administration to rats of ascorbate with morpholine and nitrite was previously shown to inhibit the liver tumor production and to enhance the induction of forestomach tumors, as compared to treatment with morpholine and nitrite. In a repetition of this experiment, 10 g morpholine/kg in the diet and 2 g sodium nitrite/liter in the drinking water were administered for life to male MRC-Wistar rats without (group 1) or with (group 2) 22.7 g sodium ascorbate/kg in the diet.

Reports of unusual clinical cases in the medical literature have contributed to our understanding of the disease spectrum, especially with regard to cancer and exposure to suspected environmental factors. It was projected that in 1980 there would be 35,500 newly diagnosed bladder cancer cases in the United States, which would be the cause of approximately 5 per cent of all cancer deaths in male subjects. There are few reports on bladder cancer of familial susceptibility and genetic predisposition, with only 4 such families described in the literature.

Geographical variations in the incidence of oral cavity, pharyngeal, and esophageal cancer were studied, with special reference to rates in countries outside of the United States and Western Europe. Although reporting techniques differ greatly and comparisons must be made with caution, significant variations are evident. Tracing such differences often reveals possible etiologic factor for these forms of cancer.

In the past 3 yr, over 140 cases of benign liver cell adenomas in young women who have used oral contraceptives have been reported in the world's medical literature. In the past, these tumors have been considered rare. Although hepatic cell tumors are benign, reports have indicated that the onset of the disease is of a critical nature--victims are frequently subject to sudden pain, shock, and hemorrhage, and a fatality rate of 10% was recorded in the aforementioned reports.

A study was undertaken to attempt to relate the distribution of exogenous factors to the varying incidences of esophageal cancer in the Caspian Littoral of Iran. For the study, 38 villages were chosen by random sampling in 14 regions defined by their esophageal cancer incidence and environmental characteristics. Information was obtained on the dietary, social, and cultural features of each village.

The results of the first 3 years of cancer registration on the Caspian Littoral are described. The main finding, confirming previous reports, is a very large variation within the region of the incidence of oesophageal cancer. Possible sources of bias are considered and shown to contribute little to the pattern of incidence.
