Due to the multiplicity of biogeochemical processes taking place in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems and limitations of the available analytical techniques, assessing the bioavailability of trace elements (TEs) is challenging. Determination of TE speciation can be facilitated by developing a mathematical model able to consider the physicochemical processes affecting TEs dynamics. A modeling framework based on anaerobic digestion model no 1 (ADM1) has been proposed to predict the biogeochemical fate TEs in AD environments.

Background: In generalized drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemics, identifying subpopulations at high risk for treatment failure and loss to care is critically important to improve treatment outcomes and prevent amplification of drug resistance. We hypothesized that an electronic dose-monitoring (EDM) device could empirically identify adherence-challenged patients and that a mixed-methods approach would characterize treatment challenges.

Methods: A prospective study of patients with DR-TB HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiating bedaquiline-containing regimens in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

In this study, a new model based on anaerobic digestion model no.1 (ADM1) approach has been proposed to simulate trace elements (TEs) complexation, precipitation and their effect on the anaerobic batch methane production. TEs complexation reactions with VFAs and EDTA have been incorporated in an extended ADM1 model which considers TE precipitation/dissolution reactions as well as biodegradation processes.

Background: Accurate safety monitoring in HIV vaccine trials is vital to eventual licensure and consequent uptake of products. Current practice in preventive vaccine trials, under the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), is to capture related side effects in a hardcopy tool. The reconciliation of this tool, 2 weeks after vaccination at the safety visit, is time consuming, laborious, and fraught with error.

Introduction: In light of the limited impact the syndromic management approach has had on the global sexually transmitted infection (STI) epidemic, we assessed a care model comprising point-of-care (POC) STI testing, immediate treatment, and expedited partner therapy (EPT) among a cohort of young women at high HIV risk in South Africa.

Methods And Findings: HIV negative women presenting for STI care underwent POC testing for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), and swabs were sent for NG culture and susceptibility testing. Results were available within 2 hours and women with STIs were immediately treated and offered EPT packs, including medication, condoms, and information for sexual partners.

Background: The introduction of Bedaquiline, the first new antimycobacterial drug in over 40 years, has highlighted the critical importance of medication adherence in drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) treatment to prevent amplified drug-resistance and derive sustained benefit. Real-time electronic dose monitoring (EDM) accurately measures adherence and allows for titration of adherence support for anti-retroviral therapy (ART). The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and acceptability of a next-generation electronic pillbox (Wisepill RT2000) for Bedaquiline-containing TB regimens.

Targeted drug delivery (TDD) for disease therapy using liposomes as nanocarriers has received extensive attention in the literature. The liposome's ability to incorporate capabilities such as long circulation, stimuli responsiveness, and targeting characteristics, makes it a versatile nanocarrier. Timely drug release at the targeted site requires that trigger stimuli such as pH, light, and enzymes be uniquely overexpressed at the targeted site.
