Methods: We performed a systematic review according to PRISMA-IPD guidelines to include individual patient data. Collected data included age at surgery, location of surgery, and surgical approach.

Impact of socioeconomic and geographical factors on clinical care of biliary atresia patients: a cross-sectional study.

Purpose: Biliary atresia (BA) is a critical pediatric condition requiring timely intervention through Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE), and up to two-thirds of patients need liver transplantation (LT). The outcomes for BA patients still need improvement in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to assess the socioeconomic and geographical profile of BA patients in India, focusing on their compliance with follow-up care, treatment-seeking behaviour, and acceptability of LT in addition, it provides recommendations to overcome identified challenges.

Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide Secreting MS Neuroblastoma.

We present a rare case of a 17-month-old child diagnosed with MS-stage neuroblastoma and associated chronic diarrhea due to elevated vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) levels. The unusual occurrence of a VIP-secreting tumor in a patient with MS neuroblastoma is a rare combination, not previously reported in the literature. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and excision of the tumor, leading to a significant decline in VIP levels and resolution of symptoms.

Primitive Myxoid Mesenchymal Tumor of Infancy: A Lost Battle.

Primitive myxoid mesenchymal tumor of infancy (PMMTI) is a low to intermediate-grade, poorly differentiated myofibroblastic tumor and is characterized by its tendency to recur locally. It commonly occurs in the 1 year of life and is predominantly seen in the axial skeleton and rarely in the retroperitoneum. We report one such case of PMMTI, which is the second case reported in English literature.

Assessment of post-pyeloplasty renal drainage in antenatally detected hydronephrosis by Tc-L, L-Ethylenedicysteine renal scintigraphy: the importance of delayed imaging.

Objective: Diuretic renal scintigraphy is important in diagnosing pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) in antenatally detected hydronephrotic (ANH) kidneys. Early-phase dynamic renal scintigraphy has several pitfalls contributing to the false interpretation of obstructed drainage, especially after pyeloplasty. This study explores the utility of delayed imaging in Tc-L,L-Ethylenedicysteine (EC) diuretic renal scintigraphy to assess post-pyeloplasty renal drainage in ANH.

Active CNS delivery of oxycodone in healthy and endotoxemic pigs.

Background: The primary objective of this study was to advance our understanding of active drug uptake at brain barriers in higher species than rodents, by examining oxycodone brain concentrations in pigs.

Methods: This was investigated by a microdialysis study in healthy and endotoxemic conditions to increase the understanding of inter-species translation of putative proton-coupled organic cation (H/OC) antiporter-mediated central nervous system (CNS) drug delivery in health and pathology, and facilitate the extrapolation to humans for improved CNS drug treatment in patients. Additionally, we sought to evaluate the efficacy of lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exposure readout as a proxy for brain unbound interstitial fluid (ISF) concentrations.

Repair of Type C Tracheo-esophageal Fistula/Esophageal Atresia With or Without Trans Anastomotic Tube: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: The use of trans anastomotic feeding tube (TAFT) during the repair of Esophageal atresia/Tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) aims to enhance outcomes by enabling early feeding, reducing the requirement for parenteral nutrition, and reducing complications such as anastomotic leak by stenting the anastomosis. However, TAFT's benefits and drawbacks are debated due to conflicting reports. Thus, we conducted a prospective pilot randomized control trial to elucidate the impact of TAFT on postoperative outcomes and the potential benefits of avoidance of TAFT.

Comparison of the Role of Anticholinergics and α-1 Adrenergic Blockers in Bladder Management in Posterior Urethral Valves: A Pilot Randomized Control Trial.

Introduction: Posterior urethral valve (PUV) is a major cause of congenital bladder dysfunction, often persisting despite treatment. Emerging therapies, including anticholinergics and α-1 blockers, offer potential but lack clear guidelines. This study evaluates their effectiveness in improving bladder function after valve fulguration.

Increased hydrophilicity of lignin-derivable bisphenol-based polysulfones for potential water filtration applications.

The functionality inherent in lignin-derivable aromatics (, polar methoxy groups) can provide a potential opportunity to improve the hydrophilicity of polysulfones (PSfs) without the need for the additional processing steps and harsh reagents/conditions that are typically used in conventional PSf modifications. As determined herein, lignin-derivable PSfs without any post-polymerization modification exhibited higher hydrophilicity than comparable petroleum-based PSfs (commercial/laboratory-synthesized) and also demonstrated similar hydrophilicity to functionalized BPA-PSfs reported in the literature. Importantly, the lignin-derivable PSfs displayed improved thermal properties relative to functionalized BPA-PSfs in the literature, and the thermal properties of these bio-derivable PSfs were close to those of common non-functionalized PSfs.

Surgically Correctable Central Cyanosis: Congenital Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt in a Child.

Congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (CEPS) are rare anomalies connecting the portal system to the inferior vena cava. This report discusses a 10-year-old boy with Type II c CEPS, presenting cyanosis and dyspnea. Surgical ligation resulted in significant improvement in symptoms.

Ocular Adverse Effects of Over-the-Counter Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Reported to the Food and Drug Administration.

Purpose: Personal care and cosmetic products can cause periocular and ocular adverse effects (AEs), for example, ocular surface disease, trauma, and hypersensitivity. The publicly available Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Adverse Event Reporting System (CAERS) database includes AE reports by consumers, healthcare practitioners, and manufacturers. The purpose of this study was to characterize ophthalmic AE associated with cosmetics and personal care products reported by the FDA CAERS database.

Lignin-derivable alternatives to bisphenol A with potentially undetectable estrogenic activity and minimal developmental toxicity.

Lignin-derivable bisguaiacols/bissyringols are viable alternatives to commercial bisphenols; however, many bisguaiacols/bissyringols (e.g., bisguaiacol F [BGF]) have unsubstituted bridging carbons between the aromatic rings, making them more structurally similar to bisphenol F (BPF) than bisphenol A (BPA) - both of which are suspected endocrine disruptors.

Lignin-derivable, thermoplastic, non-isocyanate polyurethanes with increased hydrogen-bonding content and toughness petroleum-derived analogues.

The functionality inherent in lignin-derivable bisguaiacols/bissyringols can improve the processability and performance of the resulting polymers. Herein, non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) were synthesized from bisguaiacols/bissyringols with varying degrees of methoxy substitution and differing bridging groups. Notably, the presence of increasing numbers of methoxy groups (0, 2, and 4) in bisphenol F (BPF)-, bisguaiacol F (BGF)-, and bissyringol F (BSF)-NIPUs led to higher percentages of hydrogen-bonded -OH/-NH groups (, ∼65%, ∼85%, ∼95%, respectively).

Penile Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma in a Child.

An 8-year-old boy initially thought to have a penile arteriovenous malformation was later diagnosed with a rare vascular sarcoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE). Despite challenges in diagnosis, he underwent supraselective angioembolization and partial penectomy for oncological clearance. EHE, a low-grade malignancy, requires prompt identification and treatment due to potential systemic involvement.

Extragonadal Germ Cell Tumor with Hepatic Infiltration in a Child: Aberrant Somatostatin Receptors and the Diagnostic Conundrum.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors (GCTs) are challenging to diagnose. We present a case of suprarenal GCT, with hepatic infiltration where differential diagnosis included neuroblastoma and hepatoblastoma. The positive positron emission tomography scan further obfuscated the situation.

Ophthalmology residency programs on social media.

Purpose: With the transition from away rotations and in-person interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic came a search for alternative methods to represent and promote residency programs. We investigated utilization of social media by ophthalmology residency programs in response to the pandemic.

Methods: Social media accounts of accredited ophthalmology residency programs were found through a manual search on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
