Background: Gas production due to fermentation from fructose malabsorption (FM) or lactose malabsorption (LM) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, the impact of the carbohydrate malabsorption, unlike SIBO, is relatively unknown.
Methodology: A multicenter, prospective study of consecutive adults with IBS who underwent a hydrogen breath test (HBT) (glucose, 75 g; lactose, 25 g; or fructose, 25 g) was conducted.
Background: International guidelines recommend contrasting initial treatment strategies for functional dyspepsia (FD).
Aims: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatment according to subtypes, compared with empirical proton pump inhibitor (PPI), in the initial treatment of FD.
Methods: We performed a single-blinded, randomised controlled trial of adults with FD.
Background And Aim: Abnormal liver biochemistry (ALB) is common among patients with COVID-19 infection due to various factors. It is uncertain if it persists after the acute infection. We aimed to investigate this.

We aimed to study LIVERSTAT in patients with MAFLD and to explore its role for the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis.
Methods: This is a retrospective study of data from MAFLD patients who underwent a liver biopsy.
Aim: To study the prevalence of in systemic sclerosis patients and its gastrointestinal manifestations in comparison with -negative systemic sclerosis patients. Systemic sclerosis gastrointestinal outcome post eradication was evaluated.
Method: In total, 70 systemic sclerosis patients and 70 age-, gender- and race-matched healthy controls had their urea breath test done.
Background: Hepatic sarcoidosis is an uncommon clinical condition in which clear recommendations are lacking in its treatment. We aimed to review systematically the literature on hepatic sarcoidosis treatment to guide clinicians.
Methods: Using MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases, we searched original articles on clinical studies reporting the outcome of adult hepatic sarcoidosis patients following treatment with various pharmacological agents.
Background & Aims: There is a need to reduce the screen failure rate (SFR) in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) clinical trials (MASH+F2-3; MASH+F4) and identify people with high-risk MASH (MASH+F2-4) in clinical practice. We aimed to evaluate non-invasive tests (NITs) screening approaches for these target conditions.
Methods: This was an individual participant data meta-analysis for the performance of NITs against liver biopsy for MASH+F2-4, MASH+F2-3 and MASH+F4.

Disorders of esophagogastric junction (EGJ) outflow, including achalasia and EGJ outflow obstruction, are motility disorders characterized by inadequate relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter with or without impaired esophageal peristalsis. Current guidelines are technical and less practical in the Asia-Pacific region, and there are still massive challenges in timely diagnosis and managing these disorders effectively. Therefore, a Malaysian joint societies' task force has developed a consensus on disorders of EGJ outflow based on the latest evidence, while taking into consideration the practical relevance of local and regional context and resources.

Aims: We developed and validated MAFLD fibrosis score (MFS) for identifying advanced fibrosis (≥F3) among MAFLD patients.
Methods: This cross-sectional, multicentre study consecutively recruited MAFLD patients receiving tertiary care (Malaysia as training cohort [n = 276] and Hong Kong and Wenzhou as validation cohort [n = 431]).
Background: With changes in the epidemiology and treatment of chronic liver disease (CLD), the impact of various etiologies of liver disease on steatosis and advanced fibrosis are uncertain.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted among liver disease patients of various etiologies undergoing transient elastography (TE) over a 9-year duration.
Results: Data for 2886 patients were analyzed and had the following demographics: The median age was 60 (IQR: 45-69) years, 51% were males, and ethnicity was predominantly Chinese (52.
Background: Histologically assessed liver fibrosis stage has prognostic significance in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and is accepted as a surrogate endpoint in clinical trials for non-cirrhotic NAFLD. Our aim was to compare the prognostic performance of non-invasive tests with liver histology in patients with NAFLD.
Methods: This was an individual participant data meta-analysis of the prognostic performance of histologically assessed fibrosis stage (F0-4), liver stiffness measured by vibration-controlled transient elastography (LSM-VCTE), fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4), and NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS) in patients with NAFLD.
Background: The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is now known to be similar in various geographical regions, but there has been no study directly comparing characteristics of patients with IBS between populations.
Aims: To evaluate clinical and psychological differences between adults with IBS seen in secondary care in the United Kingdom (UK) and Malaysia.
Methods: Age- and sex-matched patients with IBS from a single centre in the UK (Leeds) and two centres in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu), who fulfilled Rome III criteria, were recruited prospectively.
Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) face a multitude of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including nausea, bloating, reduced bowel movements, and difficulties with defecation. These symptoms are common and may accumulate during the course of PD but are often under-recognized and challenging to manage. Objective testing can be burdensome to patients and does not correlate well with symptoms.

Methods: This is a single-centre prospective study of a well-characterized cohort of MAFLD patients who underwent liver biopsy and followed every 6-12 months for adverse clinical outcomes.
Results: The data for 202 patients were analyzed [median age 55.
Objective: To explore the factors associated with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and to further evaluate the impact of SIBO on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in terms of symptom severity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
Methods: A cross-sectional study of consecutive adult patients who underwent glucose hydrogen breath test was conducted. Factors associated with SIBO were evaluated.
is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections in humans and responsible for 90% of duodenal ulcers and 70-90% of gastric ulcers. Despite this, many misconceptions regarding the appropriate diagnostic method and treatment strategies still exist in the Malaysian clinical practice. Under the initiative of the steering committee, an expert panel consisting of nine key opinion leaders in the field of gastroenterology convened to develop a set of consensus statements that are relevant to the Malaysian healthcare practice.
