The effect of continuous positive airway pressure therapy on early atherosclerosis in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. Longer term, repeated episodes of hypercapnia and hypoxemia during sleep are associated with inflammatory and atherosclerosis-related factors. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on cerebral vasoreactivity and early atherosclerosis in patients with severe OSAHS.

Indications and Outcomes of Intraocular Lens Explantation in a Tertiary Eyecare Center in Hungary between 2006 and 2020.

Purpose: Our study aimed to evaluate the indications and outcomes of intraocular lens (IOL) explantation surgeries in a tertiary eyecare center in Hungary.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included all IOL explantation surgeries performed between 2006 and 2020 at the Department of Ophthalmology of Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. There were no exclusion criteria for this study.

Effects of lipids on the rate-limiting steps in the dark-to-light transition of Photosystem II core complex of .

In our earlier works, we have shown that the rate-limiting steps, associated with the dark-to-light transition of Photosystem II (PSII), reflecting the photochemical activity and structural dynamics of the reaction center complex, depend largely on the lipidic environment of the protein matrix. Using chlorophyll- fluorescence transients (ChlF) elicited by single-turnover saturating flashes, it was shown that the half-waiting time (Δ ) between consecutive excitations, at which 50% of the fluorescence increment was reached, was considerably larger in isolated PSII complexes of () than in the native thylakoid membrane (TM). Further, it was shown that the addition of a TM lipid extract shortened Δ of isolated PSII, indicating that at least a fraction of the 'missing' lipid molecules, replaced by detergent molecules, caused the elongation of Δ .

Multidisciplinary Initiative to Increase Guideline-concordant Antibiotic Prescription at Discharge for Hospitalized Children with Uncomplicated Community-acquired Pneumonia.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend using narrow-spectrum antibiotics to treat uncomplicated pneumonia in children. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to evaluate if QI methods could improve guideline-concordant antibiotic prescribing at hospital discharge for children with uncomplicated pneumonia.

Methods: For this single-center QI project, we implemented QI interventions in serial plan-do-study-act cycles, focusing on the key drivers targeting general pediatric inpatient resident teams.

Representative Survey for Evaluating Housing and Manure Handling Technologies of the Hungarian Pig Sector.

In Hungary, there is a lack of information on the pig production technologies in place in the base year of 2005 and changes since then, as well as a lack of information on the number of pigs kept in different age and production categories, which makes it difficult to calculate ammonia emissions and reductions in the national inventories. Our research team conducted a representative survey of pig farms to assess housing and manure management technologies in the Hungarian pig sector in 2005 and 2015. Novel expert-based calculation methods were developed to convert farm data on pig populations into daily average numbers (DAN) of animals in different statistical categories and feeding phases.

Background And Objectives: The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses screening for social determinants of health (SDOH) and providing families resources for unmet needs. A systematic response to unmet needs requires identification, documentation, and provision of resources. Our goal was to compare SDOH International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), code use for pediatric inpatients after policy changes in 2018 permitting coding by nonphysicians.

Light-induced reversible reorganizations in closed Type II reaction centre complexes: physiological roles and physical mechanisms.

The purpose of this review is to outline our understanding of the nature, mechanism and physiological significance of light-induced reversible reorganizations in closed Type II reaction centre (RC) complexes. In the so-called 'closed' state, purple bacterial RC (bRC) and photosystem II (PSII) RC complexes are incapable of generating additional stable charge separation. Yet, upon continued excitation they display well-discernible changes in their photophysical and photochemical parameters.

Presence of SARS-CoV-2 on the conjunctival mucosa in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19: Pathophysiological considerations and therapeutic implications.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) resulted in a worldwide pandemic, due to its great capacity to invade the human body. Previous studies have shown that the primary route of invasion of this virus is the human respiratory tract via the co-expression of ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2, a serine protease on the cellular surface. Interestingly, this condition is present not only on the respiratory epithelium but on the conjunctival mucosa, as well.

Social Risks and Health Care Utilization Among a National Sample of Children With Asthma.

Objectives: Prior studies using single-center populations have established associations between social risks and health care utilization among children with asthma. We aimed to evaluate associations between social risks and health care utilization among a nationally representative sample of children with asthma.

Study Design: In this cross-sectional study, we utilized the 2018-2019 National Survey of Children's Health to identify children 2 to 17 years old with asthma.

A cross-sectional study on the quality of life in migraine and medication overuse headache in a Hungarian sample: understanding the effect of headache characteristics.

Background And Purpose: Previous studies using generic and disease specific instruments showed that both migraine and medication overuse headache are associated with lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of our study was to assess HRQoL differences in migraineurs and in patients with MOH and to examine how headache characteristics such as years with headache, aura symptoms, triptan use, headache pain severity and headache frequency are related to HRQoL.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study 334 participants were examined (248 were recruited from a tertiary headache centre and 86 via advertisements).

Intraoperative complication rates in cataract surgery performed by resident trainees and staff surgeons in a tertiary eyecare center in Hungary.

Aim: To compare the incidence of intraoperative complications during primary phacoemulsification (phaco) surgery between resident surgeons (residents) and staff surgeons (specialists) and to objectively determine the difficulty of stages in phaco surgery.

Methods: This retrospective study included cases of phaco cataract surgery performed between January and December 2019. There were no exclusion criteria.

Objectives: There is evidence of involvement of the venous system in multiple sclerosis (MS). If this bears also an association with the frequency and extent of developmental venous anomalies (DVA) still has to be determined. We therefore investigated this in patients with different phenotypes of MS and in comparison, to a control population.

Circadian Variation of Migraine Attack Onset Affects fMRI Brain Response to Fearful Faces.

Background: Previous studies suggested a circadian variation of migraine attack onset, although, with contradictory results - possibly because of the existence of migraine subgroups with different circadian attack onset peaks. Migraine is primarily a brain disorder, and if the diversity in daily distribution of migraine attack onset reflects an important aspect of migraine, it may also associate with interictal brain activity. Our goal was to assess brain activity differences in episodic migraine subgroups who were classified according to their typical circadian peak of attack onset.

By measuring chlorophyll fluorescence transients elicited by single-turnover saturating flashes (STSFs) we have shown that in diuron-treated samples an STSF generates only F (< F) fluorescence level, and to produce the maximum (F) level, additional excitations are required, which, however, can only be effective if sufficiently long Δ waiting times are allowed between the excitations. Biological variations in the half-rise time (Δ ) of the fluorescence increment suggest that it may be sensitive to the physicochemical environment of PSII.
