Optoelectronic oscillator using visible LEDs and plastic optical fibers.

This paper describes an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) capable of accepting CW light as input and providing radio-frequency (RF) carriers as output. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to describe an easy-to-assemble and low-cost OEO that uses visible LED sources with a standard 1 mm diameter plastic optical fiber as part of the oscillation ring. The gain is solely provided by a transimpedance pre-amplifier integrated with a photodetector.

The Role of 5-Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors (PDE-5I) in Current Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Treatment: A Narrative Review.

: 5-phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-5I) have been investigated as a treatment for urinary dysfunction for almost a decade. The general perception is that they play a significant role in managing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), particularly those associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, the specific biochemical processes by which PDE-5I repairs urinary function are still poorly understood and there is little instrumental evidence of significant improvement in urinary symptoms.

Blood Extracellular Vesicles Beyond Circulating Tumour Cells: A Valuable Risk Stratification Biomarker in High-Risk Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer Patients.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) prognosis varies significantly due to the biological and clinical heterogeneity. High-risk stage T1-G3, comprising 15-20% of NMIBCs, involves the lamina propria and is associated with higher rates of recurrence, progression, and cancer-specific mortality. In the present study, we have evaluated the enumeration of tumour-derived extracellular vesicles (tdEVs) and circulating tumour cells (CTCs) in high-risk NMIBC patients and their correlation with survival outcomes such as time to progression (TTP), and cancer-specific survival (CSS).

Circulating Cancer-Associated Macrophage-like Cells as a Blood-Based Biomarker of Response to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Evidence has been provided that circulating cancer-associated macrophage-like cell (CAM-L) numbers increase in response to chemotherapy, with an inverse trend compared to circulating tumor cells (CTCs). In the era of evolving cancer immunotherapy, whether CAM-Ls might have a potential role as predictive biomarkers of response has been unexplored. We evaluated whether a serial blood evaluation of CTC to CAM-L ratio might predict response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in a cohort of non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

Psychological and sexological assessment of patients with chronic prostatitis.

Purpose: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is characterized by a multiform clinical presentation requiring a differentiated treatment based on different phenotypes including the psychosocial and sexual domains. The aim of this study was assessing the complex correlations between somatic, psychological, and sexual symptoms of CP/CPPS patients.

Early detection of disease progression is a crucial issue in the management of cancer patients, especially in metastatic settings. Currently, treatment selection mostly relies on criteria based on radiologic evaluations (RECIST). The aim of the present retrospective study is to evaluate the potential inclusion of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in hybrid criteria.

A General Framework for Progressive Data Compression and Retrieval.

In scientific simulations, observations, and experiments, the transfer of data to and from disk and across networks has become a major bottleneck for data analysis and visualization. Compression techniques have been employed to tackle this challenge, but traditional lossy methods often demand conservative error tolerances to meet the numerical accuracy requirements of both anticipated and unknown data analysis tasks. Progressive data compression and retrieval has emerged as a promising solution, where each analysis task dictates its own accuracy needs.

Treatment of urge incontinence in postmenopausal women: A systematic review.

Background: Urinary incontinence and other urinary symptoms tend to be frequent at menopause because of hormonal modifications and aging. Urinary symptoms are associated with the genitourinary syndrome of menopause which is characterized by physical changes of the vulva, vagina and lower urinary tract. The treatment strategies for postmenopausal urinary incontinence are various and may include estrogens, anticholinergics, and pelvic floor muscle training.

Is cancer an intelligent species?

Some relevant emerging properties of intelligent systems are "adaptation to a changing environment," "reaction to unexpected situations," "capacity of problem solving," and "ability to communicate." Single cells have remarkable abilities to adapt, make adequate context-dependent decision, take constructive actions, and communicate, thus theoretically meeting all the above-mentioned requirements. From a biological point of view, cancer can be viewed as an invasive species, composed of cells that move from primary to distant sites, being continuously exposed to changes in the environmental conditions.

Risk of urogenital infections in non-diabetic patients treated with sodium glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Unlabelled: Although SGLT2 inhibitors have been initially employed in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, their clinical use was later extended to the treatment of other conditions such as heart failure, chronic kidney disease and obesity. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the administration of SGLT2 inhibitors has been associated with an increased incidence of urogenital infections, which may be linked to high glucose levels in the urine. The rate of urogenital side effects may be different in non-diabetic patients.

Prognostic Role of Circulating Tumor Cell Trajectories in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer.

Background: A large amount of evidence from clinical studies has demonstrated that circulating tumor cells are strong predictors of outcomes in many cancers. However, the clinical significance of CTC enumeration in metastatic colorectal cancer is still questioned. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of CTC dynamics in mCRC patients receiving first-line treatments.

Genomic landscape and survival analysis of ctDNA "neo- wild-type" patients with originally mutant metastatic colorectal cancer.

Background: The term "neo- wild-type" refers to the switch to wild-type disease in plasma circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from originally mutant colorectal cancers. Consistently, the hypothesis to re-determine mutational status in ctDNA at disease progression in RAS mutant mCRC opened to a new perspective for clinically-based selection of patients to be treated with EGFR inhibitors. Currently, the genomic landscape of "neo- wild-type" is unknown.

Biomaterials Based on Organic Polymers and Layered Double Hydroxides Nanocomposites: Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering.

The development of biomaterials has a substantial role in pharmaceutical and medical strategies for the enhancement of life quality. This review work focused on versatile biomaterials based on nanocomposites comprising organic polymers and a class of layered inorganic nanoparticles, aiming for drug delivery (oral, transdermal, and ocular delivery) and tissue engineering (skin and bone therapies). Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are 2D nanomaterials that can intercalate anionic bioactive species between the layers.

Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge.

Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is commonly defined as a breast cancer occurring during pregnancy, throughout 1 year postpartum, or during lactation. Despite being a rare circumstance, PABC is one of the most common types of malignancies occurring during pregnancy and lactation, with growing incidence in developed countries, due both to decreasing age at onset of breast cancer and to increasing maternal age. Diagnosis and management of malignancy in the prenatal and postnatal settings are challenging for practitioners, as the structural and functional changes that the breast undergoes may be misleading for both the radiologist and the clinician.

Background: Overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms of frequency, urgency and urge incontinence are frequently associated with known neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury (SCI), Parkinson's disease (PD), stroke.

Objective: The aim of our study was to review the efficacy of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for neurogenic overactive bladder.

Materials And Methods: We searched two electronic databases (PubMed and EMBASE) for randomized controlled trials focusing on pharmacological and non-pharmacological medical treatments for overactive bladder symptoms associated with neurological diseases published up to 30 April 2022.

Precision Medicine in Breast Cancer: Do MRI Biomarkers Identify Patients Who Truly Benefit from the Oncotype DX Recurrence Score Test?

The aim of this study was to combine breast MRI-derived biomarkers with clinical-pathological parameters to identify patients who truly need an Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® (ODXRS) genomic assay, currently used to predict the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy in ER-positive/HER2-negative early breast cancer, with the ultimate goal of customizing therapeutic decisions while reducing healthcare costs. Patients who underwent a preoperative multiparametric MRI of the breast and ODXRS tumor profiling were retrospectively included in this study. Imaging sets were evaluated independently by two breast radiologists and classified according to the 2013 American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR BI-RADS) lexicon.

An organoid model of colorectal circulating tumor cells with stem cell features, hybrid EMT state and distinctive therapy response profile.

Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are responsible for the metastatic dissemination of colorectal cancer (CRC) to the liver, lungs and lymph nodes. CTCs rarity and heterogeneity strongly limit the elucidation of their biological features, as well as preclinical drug sensitivity studies aimed at metastasis prevention.

Methods: We generated organoids from CTCs isolated from an orthotopic CRC xenograft model.

In this work, a spectroscopic investigation of FA and its synthesized sodium salts in the form of dianion (NaHFol) or trianion (NaFol) was scrutinized in their solid state. The spectroscopic (infrared, Raman, and solid state C-nuclear magnetic resonance) data interpretation was supported by theoretical calculations using the Density Functional Theory (DFT).

Mutation Conversion in Bevacizumab-Treated Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients: A Liquid Biopsy Based Study.

Liquid biopsies have shown that, in mutant colorectal cancer, the conversion to wild-type * status during the course of the disease is a frequent event, supporting the concept that the evolutionary landscape of colorectal cancer can lead to an unexpected negative selection of RAS mutant clones. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether the negative selection of mutation in plasma might be drug-dependent. For this purpose, we used liquid biopsy to compare the rate of conversion from mutant to wild-type * in two groups of originally mutant mCRC patients: the first treated with chemotherapy alone, while the second was treated with chemotherapy combined with bevacizumab.

Sequential Isolation and Characterization of Single CTCs and Large CTC Clusters in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detach from a primary tumor or its metastases and circulate in the bloodstream. The vast majority of CTCs are deemed to die into the bloodstream, with only few cells representing viable metastatic precursors. Particularly, single epithelial CTCs do not survive long in the circulation due to the loss of adhesion-dependent survival signals.

Drug-induced gynecomastia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Objective: To review the evidence concerning treatment-related gynecomastia in patients taking spironolactone, antiandrogens, 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors, lipid-lowering and psychotropic drugs.

Material And Methods: A search of Medline and EMBASE was performed up to 30 June 2021. We included randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of a drug belonging to these classes versus placebo or versus a drug of the same class.
