Bioremediation stands as a promising solution amid the escalating challenges posed by environmental pollution. Over the past 25 years, the influx of synthetic chemicals and hazardous contaminants into ecosystems has required innovative approaches for mitigation and restoration. The resilience of these compounds stems from their non-natural existence, distressing both human and environmental health.

The aim of this work was to analyze the effects of long-term exposure to titanium dioxide (TiO) micro- (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) (six and 12 months) on the biochemical and histopathological response of target organs using a murine model. Male Wistar rats were intraperitoneally injected with a suspension of TiO NPs (5 nm; TiO-NP5 group) or MPs (45 μm; TiO-NP5 group); the control group was injected with saline solution. Six and 12 months post-injection, titanium (Ti) concentration in plasma and target organs was determined spectrometrically (ICP-MS).

We investigate, in a rat nutritional growth retardation (NGR) model, the impact of Residual Oil Fly Ash (ROFA) on the lung immune response using in vitro and ex vivo methods. In vitro: Alveolar macrophages (AM) were isolated from Control (C) and NGR animals, cultured and treated with ROFA (1-100 µg/ml) for 24 h.

The surface of a biomedical implant can be a potential endogenous source of release of microparticles (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the biological environment. In addition, titanium particles from exogenous sources can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact. The aim of this work was to evaluate the biological response of the lung, liver, and kidneys to acute exposure to titanium dioxide (TiO ).

Buenos Aires is a megacity with an estimated moderate Air Quality Index ranging from 42 to 74 μg/m. Exposure to Urban Air Particles from Buenos Aires (UAP-BA) induces morphological and physiological respiratory alterations; nevertheless, no studies on extrapulmonary organs have been performed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe quality of life in large megacities is directly affected by its air quality. In urban environments, suspended particles from anthropogenic origin is one of the main air contaminants identified as highly genotoxic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic. Atmospheric monitoring is therefore imperative, and bioassays to detect the effects of genotoxic agents give usually excellent results.

Young BALB/c mice were intranasal instilled with 1mg/BW of Urban Air Particles from Buenos Aires or Residual Oil Fly Ash. Histopathology, oxidative metabolism and inflammation on lungs and extrapulmonary organs and the systemic response were evaluated.

Air pollution represents a major health problem in megacities, bringing about 8 million deaths every year. The aim of the study was to evaluate in vivo the ocular and respiratory mucosa biological response after chronic exposure to urban air particles from Buenos Aires (UAP-BA). BALB/c mice were exposed to UAP-BA or filtered air for 1, 6, 9, and 12 months.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAir particulate matter has been associated with adverse effects in the cardiorespiratory system leading to cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory effects. Particulate matter-associated cardiac effects may be direct or indirect. While direct interactions may occur when inhaled ultrafine particles and/or particle components cross the air-blood barrier reaching the cardiac tissue, indirect interactions may occur as the result of pulmonary inflammation and consequently the release of inflammatory and oxidative mediators into the blood circulation.

However, air pollution does not impact equally all individuals, as children appear to be more vulnerable subpopulations. Air pollution and malnutrition are two distinct factors that have been associated with oxidative damage.

We exposed conjunctival cells to Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex (PCCVC) or Calbuco ash particles and evaluated proliferation, viability, apoptosis, MUC1 expression, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress markers. Ash particles from these volcanoes vary in size, composition, and morphology.

However, PM doesn't affect equally to all people, being the old cohort the most susceptible and studied. We hypothesized that another specific life phase, the middle-aged subpopulation, may be negatively affected.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAir particulate matter has been associated with adverse impact on the respiratory system leading to cytotoxic and proinflammatory effects. The biological mechanisms behind these associations may be initiated by inhaled small size particles, particle components (soluble fraction) and/or mediators released by particle-exposed cells (conditioned media). The effect of Urban Air Particles from Buenos Aires (UAP-BA) and Residual Oil Fly Ash (ROFA) a surrogate of ambient air pollution, their Soluble Fractions (SF) and Conditioned Media (CM) on A549 lung epithelial cells was examined.

Even more, several in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that air PM has a wide toxicity spectra depending among other parameters, on its size, morphology, and chemical composition. The Reconquista River is the second most polluted river from Buenos Aires, and people living around its basin are constantly exposed to its contaminated water, soil and air.

Introduction: Meristematic mitotic cells of Allium cepa constitute an adequate material for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity evaluation of environmental pollutants, such as phenol, which is a contaminant frequently found in several industrial effluents.
Results And Discussion: In the present work, Brassica napus hairy roots (HR) were used for phenol removal assays. The toxicity of post-removal solutions (PRS) and phenol solutions was analyzed.
Among the group of lactic acid bacteria, Streptococcus thermophilus has found a wide application in industrial processes used for the manufacture of dairy products. Taking advantage of different proteome extraction and subfractionation protocols, bacterial cytosolic and membrane proteins were isolated and resolved by independent gel-free and gel-based separation procedures. Whole cytosolic fraction and its acid, basic and low molecular mass protein components were separated by different resolutive 2-DE and tricine 1-DE gels and identified by MALDI-TOF PMF and/or microLC-ESI-IT-MS/MS.

Recently, a genomic consortium sequenced and annotated its entire genome, which has been demonstrated to contain 1900 coding sequences. In this study, we have revealed the expression products of almost 200 different genes using a proteomic strategy combining 2-DE plus MALDI-TOF PMF and differential 1-DE plus muLC-ESI-IT-MS/MS.

We employ a topological approach to investigate the nature of quasistationary states of the mean-field XY Hamiltonian model. We focus on the quasistationary states reached when the system is initially prepared in a fully magnetized configuration. By means of numerical simulations and analytical considerations, we show that, along the quasistationary trajectories, the system evolves in a manifold of critical points of the potential energy function.

Growing cultures of Fibrobacter succinogenes S85 digested cellulose at a rapid rate, but nongrowing cells and cell extracts did not have detectable crystalline cellulase activity. Cells that had been growing exponentially on cellobiose initiated cellulose digestion and succinate production immediately, and cellulose-dependent succinate production could be used as an index of enzyme activity against crystalline cellulose. Cells incubated with cellulose never produced detectable cellobiose, and cells that were preincubated for a short time with thiocellobiose lost their ability to digest cellulose (competitive inhibition [K(infi)] of only 0.

The amino acid substitution, identified by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, was due to a TGG----TGA substitution as assessed by DNA sequencing. Analysis of the chromosomal background indicates that the globin gene cluster containing the mutant gene has most probably been rearranged by a recombination event, since the mutation was associated with restriction fragment length polymorphism haplotype IX, instead of haplotype I, as previously reported.
