Importance: The optimal treatment of acute uncomplicated appendicitis in older adults with frailty is not defined.

Objective: To examine outcomes associated with treatment strategies for acute uncomplicated appendicitis in older adults with or without frailty.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study used National Inpatient Sample data from adults 65 years or older with a diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • - Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major cause of death for pregnant women, with specific injuries to the head, neck, or face indicating intentional harm.
  • - The study analyzed data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2019, identifying 530 pregnant women with suspected IPV out of over 28,500 trauma cases, focusing on patient demographics and potential risk factors.
  • - Findings indicate that younger Black women with low income and a history of substance use disorder are at a higher risk for IPV-related injuries, highlighting significant racial and socioeconomic disparities in this issue.

Objectives: An isolated reduction in the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLco; iso↓DLco) is one of the most common pulmonary function test (PFT) abnormalities in people living with HIV (PWH), but its clinical implications are incompletely understood. In this study, we explored whether iso↓DLco in PWH is associated with a greater respiratory symptom burden.

Study Design: Cross-sectional analysis.

Objectives: Studies have shown that people with HIV (PWH) may be at increased risk for chronic lung diseases and lung function abnormalities, which may be associated with immune activation. We tested the association of a panel of 12 immune activation and inflammation biomarkers with spirometry and single-breath diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLco).

Design: Cross-sectional, observational study.

Background: COPD is a common HIV comorbidity, and HIV-infected individuals have a higher incidence and earlier onset of COPD compared to HIV-uninfected individuals. While the pathogenesis of HIV-associated COPD is largely unknown, chronic inflammation may contribute. Four pneumoproteins known to be markers of lung injury and inflammation have been associated with COPD in HIV-uninfected individuals: PARC/CCL-18, SP-D, CC-16, and sRAGE.

In asthma, airflow obstruction is thought to result primarily from inflammation-triggered airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction. However, anti-inflammatory and smooth muscle-relaxing treatments are often temporary or ineffective. Overproduction of the mucin MUC5AC is an additional disease feature that, while strongly associated pathologically, is poorly understood functionally.
