Article Synopsis
  • Packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions, while beneficial in treating oncology patients, can lead to iron overload, prompting this study on ferritin as a marker for growth and iron levels in children with lymphomas and solid tumors.
  • An analysis of 88 children revealed that ferritin levels above 500 ng/mL were present in around 15% at admission and 18% post-treatment, with older patients showing higher levels but no significant differences based on tumor type or sex.
  • The study found strong correlations between ferritin levels at month 15 of treatment and transfusion parameters, but overall, ferritin and transfusion factors did not affect patient survival, with levels returning to baseline after therapy ended.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disorder, and catheter ablation (CA) is a key treatment, but the 30-day death risk may be underestimated due to selection bias in previous studies.
  • - This study reviewed a comprehensive dataset from Poland, analyzing 31,214 ablation procedures between 2012 and 2019, finding a low 30-day mortality rate of 0.1%, especially among older patients.
  • - The results showed no significant difference in death risks between different types of ablation methods or first versus repeat procedures, suggesting CA is relatively safe except for older populations.

Salvage autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT) may be used to treat relapse of plasma cell myeloma occurring after previous auto-HCT. When an insufficient number of hematopoietic stem cells have been stored from the initial harvest, remobilization is necessary. Here, we aimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of different doses of cytarabine (total 800 vs.

Transfusions of packed red blood cells (PRBCs), given due to an oncological disease and its acute complications, are an indispensable part of anticancer therapy. However, they can lead to post-transfusion iron overload. The study aim was to evaluate the role of ferritin as a nonspecific marker of leukemic growth and marker of transfusion-related iron overload.

Background: Salvage autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (autoHSCT) may be used to treat relapse of multiple myeloma occurring after previous autoHSCT. When insufficient number of hematopoietic stem cells was stored from the initial harvest, remobilization of stem cells is necessary.

Purpose: The analysis of stem cell remobilization after previous autoHSCT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the frequency and risk factors of parasite infections in children and adolescents in north-eastern Poland, based on tests conducted from December 2008 to May 2009.
  • Out of 120 children tested, 90 were found to be infected with one or more parasites, with the highest prevalence being Ascaris lumbricoides, followed by Toxocara spp. and Giardia lamblia.
  • Significant risk factors for infection included poor hygiene (dirty hands-mouth contact) and proximity to domestic animals; infections were linked to symptoms appearing in at least three different body systems.

The impact of endometrial growth to the triple layer, endometrial thickness, and echogenicity on IVF outcomes was investigated in the study. A retrospective analysis of 583 ICSI patients was conducted: 385 with a long GnRH agonist protocol, 114 with a short GnRH agonist, and 84 with a GnRH antagonist protocol. The progression of endometrial growth to the appearance of the triple layer, endometrial thickness, and echogenicity was compared between protocols.
